Nickodemis Blankenship GRUNDY – Nickodemis Blankenship, 89 years of age, of the Lester’s Fork area of Route 1, passed away Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at Buchanan General Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late King and Spicy Blankenship. He was a life-long resident of Buchanan County and a member of North Springs Regular Baptist Church. He was a retired coal miner and a member of United Mine Workers of America. Mr. Blankenship was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Lester Blankenship, Feb. 18, 1989. Survived by five daughters: Mrs. Linda Light, Hurley, Va.; Mrs. Judy Smith, Hurley; Miss Sue Blankenship, Route 1, Grundy; Mrs. Paula Hackney, Hurley; and Mrs. Michelle Graves, Charlottesville, Va.; five sons: Jerry Blankenship, Hurley; Roger Blankenship, Grundy; Bobby Blankenship, Grundy; Hufford Blankenship, Onley, Md.; and Elmer Blankenship, Rockville, Md.; two half- sisters: Lottie Ratliff, Grundy; and Clemmie Childress, Grundy; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was born on July 22, 1935, in West Virginia and was a daughter of the late Worthy Runyon and Bertha Brady Runyon. Mrs. Dotson was also preceded in death by two sisters, Pauline Golden and Linda Cunningham. She was a former resident of Alexandria, Va., and was retired from the American Virginia Water Works Company with 30 years of service. Mrs. Dotson was a member of the Pilgrim Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Palmer C. Dotson; a daughter, Janice D. Osborne of Linden, Va.; two brothers: Denzil Runyon of Lockney, W.Va.; and Darrell Runyon of Lost Creek, W.Va.; four sisters: Maxine Kelly of Weston, W.Va.; Geraldine Nicholson of Geneva, Ohio; Bernice Keesucker of Jane Lew, W.Va.; and Freda Swick of Jefferson, Ohio; and two grandsons: Craig L. Getz ABINGDON, Md. – Augustus A. “Gus” Getz, 89, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, Bel Air. Born in Baltimore, he was a son of the late Joseph A. and Anna T. Sader Getz. He was a resident of New Freedom, Pa., for his first 20 years, then of Baltimore for the next 38 years, then of Meadowview, Va., for 15 years. He moved to Maryland Line, Md., in 1990. His final residence was in Abingdon, Md., since 1999. He was employed as a mail clerk for the Post Office in Baltimore for 32 years, retiring in 1968. He worked for six years, from 1969-75, at Rose Exterminator Co. in Baltimore. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 1966, in Abingdon. Surviving are his wife, Mary A. Naylor Getz; four children: Carolyn L. Topper of Layton, Utah; Patricia A. Johnson of Baltimore; Thomas J. Getz Sr. of Coral Springs, Fla., and Christina E. Uppercue of Bel Air; a brother, William J. Mrs. Ingram was a devoted wife and mother and a dedicated homemaker. She had been a member of Calvary Baptist Church for over 60 years and was extremely active in teaching and serving her church. She lived and taught the “good news” that “Jesus loves us, we know, because the Bible tells us so; and, whoever believes in Him will live with Him forever.” She was the widow of Ernest “Jerry” Ingram. He was a native of Washington County, Va., and had lived most of his life in Bristol Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dexter and Ruth Kestner; a brother, Ernest Kestner; and a sister, Beulah Calloway; and Ocie Poston. He served in the U.S. Army in North Africa and Italy during World War II. He was a former employee of Hecht’s Bakery, retiring from Purity Bakery. He was a charter member of Higher Ground Fellowship Church. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Katheryn Tate Kestner. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oakley and Myrtle Stanley; one son, Jeffrey Lynn Stanley; a brother, Bernie “Byrd” Stanley and his loving wife, Laquita Joy Kiser Stanley. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and then he was in sales for the remainder of his career. He was also a Mason and an active member in the Lions Club. His other hobbies include farming, bluegrass music and travel. He contributed to a variety of different charities and was of the Baptist faith. He was the owner of Stanley Rentals. Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of Willie Charles Church, Hurley, and the late Okie Charles Church. She was a life-long resident of Buchanan County, a member of Blackey Church of Christ and was a homemaker. Mrs. Taylor is survived by her father, Willie Charles Church, Hurley; her husband, Bobby Andrew Taylor, Wolford; two daughters: Sherina and husband Christopher Gerald Justus, Hurley; and Samantha and husband, Eural Viers, Vansant, Va.; one sister, Geraldine Justus, Hurley; three brothers: Ronnie Church, Hurley; Monroe Church, Grundy; and Jackie Church, Columbia, S.C.; one grandson, William Taylor Justus; three nieces; and three nephews. She was preceded in death by one grandson, Andrew Seth Viers, Nov. 26, 2000; and one nephew, Ralph Monroe Church, April 2, 2002. Alvin Finley Tolbert SALTVILLE – Mr. Alvin Finley Tolbert, age 70, went to be with the Lord Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, in Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cora Stuart Tolbert and William “Bill” Tolbert ; and a brother, Laney Tolbert. Whitt Jr. STEELESBURG, Va. – Mr. Samuel G. Whitt Jr., age 85, passed away Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born in Bandy, Va., and was a son of the late Samuel Graham and Dollie Nancy Christian Whitt Sr., both Tazewell County natives. He was a life long resident of the Cedar Bluff area and was a long-time businessman in the Richlands area. He was a former real estate and insurance agent associated with Richlands National Bank, a retired miner and a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 6633 of Amonate, Va. He was a disabled World War II U.S. Army veteran, serving in the European Theater, was a member of the Barns- Beavers VFW Post 7136 of Tazewell, Va., and the American Legion. He was a member of the Cedar Bluff Lodge 260 AF&AM, the Scottish Rites Bodies of Roanoke and was a Kentucky Colonel. Mr. Whitt was also a member of the Steelesburg United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Hazel Burgess Whitt, Sept. 22,, 2003; one daughter, Mrs. Judy Lynn Fogleman; one son, Mr. Rudy Glen Whitt; four sisters, Georgia Taylor, Lois Morris, Daisy Sharpe and Dolly Warburton; also, two brothers, Peyton Whitt and Howard Whitt. Survivors are: one daughter, Mrs. Joan Mash Booher and husband William of Cedar Bluff, Va.; one son, Mr. Phillip Daniel Whitt and wife Peggy of Winchester, Ky.; one sister, Mrs. Pauline Rice of Ft.
