Cox BRISTOL, Tenn. – Hazel O. Cox, age 67, of 557 Meadowview Rd., passed away Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003 in the Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born in Lebanon, but lived most of her life in the Bristol area. She was the daughter of the late Dewey and Grace Carrol Altizer and was a member of Bethelview Baptist Church. She was an employee of Old Dominion Carton Company and a former employee of Coca-Cola Bottling Company and Bristol Lingerie. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Diana Cox. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, John E. Cox. She is also survived by grandsons, Joseph A. Hutchins and Tim Fandel and wife Nicole; sisters, Mary Camper and Sylvia Teller and husband Luther, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, in the Glenwood Cemetery, with the Rev. John Rayburn officiating. James Hughlett Sr. CHATTANOOGA – James DeVault Hughlett Sr., 90, passed away Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, at Life Care Center of East Ridge, Chattanooga. He was a life-long resident of Chattanooga, a communicant of Grace Episcopal Church and was a retired employee of Combustion Engineering with 30 years of service. He was born in Bristol Tennessee to the late John Lee and Claude DeVault Hughlett. He was preceded in death by a brother, John Lee Hughlett Jr., and a grandson, James Cantrell Sherrill. He is survived by wife, Jere Davis Hughlett; sister, Margaret H. Helms, Sarasota, Fla.; son and daughter in-law, James D. and Barbara Hughlett Jr. of Farragut, Tenn.; daughters and son in-laws, Kay and Dr. Powell Hutcherson and Amy and Truman Sherrill, both of Chattanooga; foster daughter, Alice F. Kilby, died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, in Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home. She is survived by one son, Hicks Kilby of Marion; two grandchildren, Mitch Kilby and Tina Kilby, and three sisters, Ruth and June Cornett of Mouth of Wilson, Va., Blanche Francis of West Jefferson, N.C., and Faye and Charles Fluty of Roanoke. Teddie Marlene Lipps APPALACHIA, Va. – Teddie Marlene Lipps, 47, formerly of Appalachia, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at Holy Cross Medical Center in Granada Hill, Calif. A graduate of Appalachia High School, she was a registered nurse. Marlene was a loving mother, daughter and sister and will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her father, Ted Bartee, and is survived by a daughter, Jessica Woods of Florida; her mother, Annette Bartee, Big Stone Gap; sisters and brothers-in-law, Teresa and Jim Holdway, Big Stone Gap, and Brenda and Robert Williams, Jonesville, Va.; brothers and sisters-in-law, A.J. and Dinah Bartee, Norton, Garland and Robin Bartee, Lance and Tamela Bartee and George Bartee, all of Appalachia, and several nieces and nephews. Ted Jack Roberts SALTVILLE – Mr. Ted Jack Roberts, age 86, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, in the Smyth County Community Hospital. Mr. Roberts was preceded in death by his parents, Wyndham and Katheryn Roberts, three sisters, Edythe Roberts, Edna Roberts and Ruth Lawrence, two brothers, Hardy Roberts and James Roberts, and a grandson, Ted Andrew Blair. He was a member of the First Church of God, Allison Gap, where he was treasurer for 43 years, and the treasurer of the weekday religious education for 40 years. He was also the operator of the Roberts and Helton Furniture and Appliance Store for many years. Survivors include his wife, Aretta Helton Roberts; three daughters, Linda Roberts Blair, Saltville, Katheryn Lee Houltzhouser, Sparta, Tenn., and Jackie Lynn Woolsey, Alma, Mich.; two sisters, Mazie Morgan, Prattville, Ala., and Nell Lambert, Waynesboro, Va.; sister-in-law, Betty Roberts, Sulphur, La.; one brother, Eugene “Beany” Roberts and wife Dixie Brooks Roberts, Chilhowie; seven grandchildren, Peter Blair, Mark Blair, Nicci Summerer, Nathen Fritts, Ryan Woolsey, Aaron Woolsey and Justin Woolsey, and several nieces and nephews. Stokes, age 88, of the Baptist Valley section, passed away Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, in a Claypool Hill, Va., nursing home following a lengthy illness. She was born in Powhatan, Va., and was the daughter of the late Cheslea and Katherine Stapelkamp Dorset, both Powhatan natives. She had made her home in the Chesapeake, Va., area most of her life prior to moving to Tazewell County in 1993. She was a retired school teacher and guidance counselor for 45 years at Great Bridge High School in Great Bridge, Va. She was a graduate of Manchester District High School in Richmond and attended Harrisonburg State Teachers College and received her B.S. Degree from Richmond Professional Institute of William and Mary College. She was a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church of Appomattox, Va., and had been a member of the Virginia Alpha Delta Cappa since 1956. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Chester S. Stokes, six sisters and four brothers. Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Hazel Wyatt and husband Jerry of Cedar Bluff; two sisters, Miss Anne Dorset of Appomattox and Mrs. Irvin (Gerry) Walker of Lynchburg; three grandchildren, Leslie Patton and husband Michael of Cedar Bluff, Rebecca Wyatt and fiancé Jim Foringer of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Emily Brooks and husband Tony of Maryville, Tenn.; two great-grandchildren, Megan Patton and James Patton, and special friends and caregivers, Stella Brewster and Rosie Vance. She was the widow of Wornie Calvin Taylor and was born July 5, 1925, at Whitetop, Va., to Luther and Bannie Blevins Greer. Mr. Taylor was a retired coal miner of Clinchfield Coal Co., a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Smith Ridge Missionary Baptist Church. His parents, Columbus Garfield and Millie Hattie Kiser Taylor, preceded him in death. Mrs. Welch was a native of Linville, N.C., and had lived in Elizabethton for the past fifty years. She was the daughter of the late Grover and Ethel Blalock Miller. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold J. Welch, one brother, G.C. Miller, and one sister, Margaret White. She was a lifetime member of the First Church of the Nazarene.
