Marguerite Belcher ABINGDON – Mrs. Marguerite Lois Belcher, age 85, passed away Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Belcher was born at Big Four, W.Va., and had lived most of her life in West Virginia before moving from McDowell County, W.Va., to Smyth County, Va., in 1982. She was a member of the Summit Baptist Church, Sugar Grove, Va., and was preceded in death by her husband, Wade H. Belcher Sr., her parents, Brooks and Mamie Scarberry, four sons, Wade H. Belcher Jr., Donald G. Belcher, Darrell T. Belcher and David W. Belcher Jr., and two grandchildren, Patricia Faye Finney and Bryan Kevin Phillips. Survivors include a son, Taylor G. Belcher, Hampton, Va.; four daughters, Gloria Phillips and husband Robert, Abingdon, Rita Finney and husband Ernie, Christiansburg, Va., Carole Dickerson and husband Roy, Blacksburg, Va., Teresa Billings and husband Louis, Sugar Grove; 22 grandchildren; 24 great- grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Garland Countiss HARDINSBURG, Ky. – Garland Countiss, 90, died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at his residence. He was a native of Norton. He was retired as a farmer and was a member of Stephensport United Methodist Church, as well as a Mason. He formerly owned and operated a grocery and dry goods store in Norton. Surviving are his wife, Louise Countiss, and a sister, Wilma Graham, Bristol, Tennessee. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, Hardinsburg. Edna Damron VANSANT, Va. – Edna Phyllis “Gram” Owens Damron, 84 years of age, passed away Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at her home. Born in Nancy, Va., June 7, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Corbet Owens and Bertha Edwards Owens. She joined the Baptist church in 1960, was a current member of the Victory Baptist Church at Vansant, a member of the Willing Women Worker Club of the Victory Baptist Church, a member of the Red Hat Society and a retired dietitian. “Gram” was an avid gardener who loved to work with flowers, a bird watcher, enjoyed quilting and was a loving mother, grandmother and great- grandmother. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Damron, one daughter, Joann Edwards, four brothers, Ival Owens, Rex Owens, Cecil Owens and A.C. Owens, and one grandson, Jason Damron. She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Hansel (Loretta) Edwards of Vansant, Mrs. Bob (Theresa) Carroll of Michigan, Mrs. Elliot (Kathy) Viers Jr. and Mrs. Michael (Bertha) Street, both of Vansant, and Lisa Rife of Michigan; one son, Arthur Johnny Damron of Ohio, and one sister, Opal Church of Haysi, Va. He was a life-long resident of Buchanan County, a member of Deel Church of Christ and a retired employee of Appalachian Power Company with 33 years of service. Mr. Dawson was born and raised in Esmont, Va. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Dawson moved to Norton in the late 1940s. He was a member of the Norton United Methodist Church. He worked for the Humble Oil and Refining Company (now Exxon) from 1948-1971. He served as executive director of the Norton Redevelopment and Housing Authority from 1971-1980. Survivors include four children, sons and daughters-in-law, Donald M. and Priscilla Dawson of Tallahassee, Fla., James R. and Lauri Dawson of Ventura, Calif., and Robert W. and Linore Dawson of Berwyn, Pa.; daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Mark Beaman of Carrollton; one sister, Margaret Stein of Palo Alto, Calif.; one brother, Martin Dawson of Richmond; nine grandchildren, Laura Dawson Fisher, Andrew D. Betty Sue Purifoy EMORY, Va. – Mrs. Betty Sue King Purifoy, age 79, died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at her home. Arrangements will be announced by Farris Funeral Service. James H. Quillen KINGSPORT - Congressman James Henry Quillen passed away at 6:30 a.m. Sunday morning, Nov. 2, 2003, at Indian Path Medical Center. Born Jan. 11, 1916, in Wayland, Scott County, Va., he was one of 10 children born to John Alley and Hannah Chapman Quillen. The family moved to Kingsport in the late 1920s, when he was very young, where he continued his schooling and graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School. He worked in the newspaper industry prior to serving as an ensign on the USS Antietam in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Upon returning to civilian life in 1946, he entered the construction business in Kingsport where he built numerous houses. He met Cecile Cox during this time and they were married Aug. 9, 1952. At her persuasion, along with others, he entered the race for the Tennessee Legislature in 1954, and holds the record for having the longest continuous service by any Tennessee member of the U.S. House of Representatives since statehood in 1796. He was Dean of the Tennessee delegation to Washington. Congressman Quillen retired on Jan. 4, 1997, concluding his 34 years in the U.S. Congress and over 40 years in public service. He was a member First Broad Street United Methodist Church, Kingsport. On Jan. 25, 2002, the Congressman’s beloved wife of over 49 years, Cecile Cox Quillen, died of heart failure. He was also preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters. They are Willie, Jack, Bob, Roy and Edd Quillen, Mrs. Nannie Hagy and Mrs. Rubye Parker. Survivors include two sisters, Faye Quillen of Kingsport and Mrs. Vesta Wilson of Lenoir, N.C., and several nieces and nephews and many cousins. She attended the First Assembly of God in Abingdon. Mrs. Tiller was a homemaker and loving mother. She was preceded in death by her husband James C. Tiller Sr. in 1990, two sisters, Mary Lambert and Molly Lambert, a brother, Floyd Lester, and a grandson, Randy Jarvis. Those left to mourn include five daughters, Rosa Fields and husband Oscar of Abingdon, Merle Jarvis and husband Ray of Mansfield, Ohio, Mary McClanahan and husband Stanley of Danese, W.Va., Wanda Tiller, address unknown, and Dora Cline and husband Ervin of Justice, W.Va.; four sons, Donnie Tiller of Highlands, Calif., Tommy Tiller and wife Clara of Abingdon, James C. Tiller Jr. and wife Henrietta of Glen Rogers, W.Va., and John Tiller and wife Marsha of Bristol Tennessee; four brothers, Ed Lester of Mansfield, Herman Lester of Phoenix, Ariz., Alice Lester of Portland, Ore., and Posy Lester of Mansfield; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the branch facility of Farris Funeral Service, located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, with Rev. Tim Norris and Rev. Leroy Lester officiating. Burial will follow in the Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Widner BRISTOL, Va. – Margaret “Peggy” Fortner Widner, 80, went to be with the Lord Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a daughter of the late Walter Fortner and Virginia Conley Fortner Slaughter. She was a life-long resident of Bristol and was a member of Scenic Park Baptist Church. Mrs. Widner was retired from Country Miss and was the widow of Paul Widner. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Joan Craighead, Betty Miller and Mary Barr, and four brothers, Earl, Elmo, George, and Bill Fortner. She is survived by her daughter, Connie Shank and her husband Norman of Lebanon, Mo.; a sister, Shirley Dixon; a brother, Wesley “W.D.” Fortner, both of Bristol Tennessee, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 Tuesday morning at the graveside in Forest Hills Memory Gardens, with Rev. Kenneth Widner officiating. Charles C. Winebarger BRISTOL, Tenn. – Charles C. Winebarger went to be with the Lord Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, at the Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mr. Winebarger was a native and life-long resident of the Bristol area and a retired employee of Inter-Mountain and Sprint Telephone Systems with over 43 years of service. He attended Tennessee Avenue Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean conflict. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Susie Winebarger; one daughter, Sherry Lynn Reeter and husband Mark of Abingdon; one sister, Grace Sneed of Bristol, and two brothers, Garrett H. Winebarger of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Robert Winebarger of Washington, N.C. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, from the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel, with Brother Joe Hudson and Brother David Burton officiating. Entombment will follow in the Glenwood Cemetery Mausoleum. Military funeral rites will be conducted by the Highlands Fellowship Church Honor Color Guard.
