Combs Funeral Service in Lebanon is serving the family of Mrs. Adams. Charles C. Anderson RURAL RETREAT, Va. – Charles C. Anderson, age 86, died Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, in Corbin, Ky. He was a member of Cedar Bluff Baptist Church. He was born in Grayson County on Sept. 19, 1917, the son of the late Nathan Fields Anderson and Lessie Parks Anderson. Mr. Anderson supervised the construction of several roads in the area, including parts of Interstate 81 and updates to U.S. Highway 11 in Abingdon. After retiring from Richard E. Phillippi Construction Company, he worked as a consultant for the Commonwealth of Virginia, overseeing the construction of improvements to the Virginia Highlands and Groseclose Airports. He was a member of the Marion Masonic Lodge 31 AF&AM, where he had served as Master, the Lynn Commandry 9, where he had served as Commander, the Marion Royal Arch Chapter 54, where he had served as High Priest and he was also a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Kazim Temple. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bess L. Anderson; one daughter, Pansy Fulton; five brothers, Henry, Glen, David, James and Kenneth; three sisters, Mary L. Adams, Kate Stephenson and Nell Sanders. Mr. Anderson is survived by two daughters and three sons-in-law: Carol and Mike Musser of Rural Retreat; Nancy and Bobby Keyes of Corbin; and Rodney Fulton of Roanoke; two sisters: Maxine Bullins of Sugar Grove, Va.; and Ruth Silver of Chilhowie; one brother, Stephen Anderson of Troutdale, Va.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Varney was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Varney. She is survived by five daughters and four sons-in-law: Emma and Elzie Thacker of Hazel Park, Mich.; Irene Griffith of Mouth Card, Ky.; Mattliene and Charles Downing of Goodells, Mich.; Joann and Sonny Pruitt of Rural Retreat; and Phyllis Fern and Gordon Burkett of Atkins; four sons and three daughters-in-law: Bobby Varney of Atkins; Hairel and Maryelou Varney of Ferndale, Mich.; Ronald and Mary Varney of Wytheville; and Freddie and Linda Varney of Marion; two sisters: Myrtle Beard of Williamson, W.Va.; and Edith May of Canada, Ky.; two brothers: James Bostic Jr. of Stone, Ky., and Thurman Bostic of Vine Grove, Ky.; 25 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and many special care givers at Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 14, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel, with Rev. Mike Sage and Rev. Kevin Varney officiating. Burial will follow at Wassum Cemetery, Atkins. Fredrick Walter Watkins TRINITY, N.C. – Mr. Fredrick Walter Watkins, 70, 3432 Mt. View St., died Nov. 11, 2003, at GrayBrier Nursing and Retirement Center. Mr. Watkins was born Sept. 8, 1933, in Washington County, Va., a son to Painter A. and Rosalee Colvin Watkins. A resident of this area since 1958, he was retired from City of High Point Parks and Recreation and was a member of Christ’s Church in High Point. He was married Annie Mae Case Watkins, who preceded him in death in 1996. Also awaiting him in glory, in addition to his parents and wife, are a sister, Louise Ferguson; and a brother, Howard Watkins. Surviving are three sisters: Lucille Hopkins of Sophia; Martha Crain of Abingdon; and Nancy Serenda of Ohio; and four brothers: Painter A. Watkins of Trinity; Clifford K. Watkins of Jacksonville Fla.; Vance H. Watkins of Abingdon; and Leonard J. Watkins of Trinity; 23 nieces and nephews; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; and a special friend, Pauline Vines of High Point.
