Born in Martin, Ky., he was a son of Stella Dodd Hager, Oakwood, Va., and the late Kerman Odell Hager. He had been a resident of Buchanan County for several years, was of the Pentecostal faith and a retired employee of Island Creek Coal Corporation Beatrice Mines. He was a graduate of Grundy High School and attended Southwest Virginia Community College. He served in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of sergeant. He served in Germany in the military police, receiving the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Expert M-16 Rifeman. He was a member of John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion and DAV Chapter 59. Mr. Hager is survived by his wife of 24 years, Deborah Boyd Hager, Keen Mountain; one daughter, Traci Eskridge, Manassas, Va.; one son, Jerry Wayne and wife Donna Hager, Oakwood; two sisters, Carol Matthews, Eastion, Ga., and Sandra Riggsby of Keen Mountain, and three brothers, Kerman Hager Jr., Oakwood, Terry Hager, Springfield, Va., and Ricky Hager, Oakwood. Following graduation from Longwood University, she moved to Wise and began a 23-year teaching career with the Wise County School System. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl W. Hamilton. She is survived by a son, Bill Hamilton (Sandra) of Miami; a daughter, Nancy Brumfield (Richard) of Sarasota; four grandchildren, Paul Hamilton, Michael Hamilton, Joe Smiddy and Julie McClellan (Mike); two great-grandchildren, Anthony and Elyse McClellan; a brother, Bill Hunter (Frances Anne) of Appomattox, Va., and many nieces, nephews and cousins. McCroskey Jr., age 78, of 300 Fieldcrest Rd., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at the Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a life-long resident of the Bristol area and a son of Ray M. McCroskey Sr. and Ethel Atkins McCroskey. He was founder, dedicated owner and operator of the Thrifty Markets and had a life-long dedication to his employees and customers. He was a member of the VFW Patton-Crosswhite Post 6075 and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was an avid benevolence supporter in East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving during World War II as a pilot. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lillian Bailey and Arbutus Simpson, and a brother, Glen McCroskey. Survivors include wife of 57 years, Yolanda O. Arnold McCroskey, and several nieces and nephews. "Billy" Sharrett, age 62, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at his residence. Billy was a native of Bristol Virginia and had been a member of the Central Baptist Church for 19 years, where he served as Sunday School superintendent and deacon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene Sharrett and Annie Gaynelle Arnold, and a grandson, Joshua Sharrett. Thelma Celina Smith RAVEN, Va. – Mrs. Thelma Celina Smith, age 78, of the Red Root Ridge section, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at her home following a lengthy illness. She was born in Tazewell County, Va., and was a daughter of the late Wallace Matthew and Trula Irene Smith. She was a life-long resident of the Raven area and was a member of the Macedonia Primitive Baptist Church on Red Root Ridge. Umholtz Jr., age 81, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003. A native of Bristol Tennessee, he was raised in Elizabethton. He was the son of the late J.Karl and Esther Gibson Umholtz. He was a Army veteran having served in World War II. During his career, he worked as an administrator in Overseas Dependent Schools, was a professor at the University of Tampa and retired from the Florida Department of Education. Dr. Umholtz was a member of Tallahassee Heights United Methodist Church in Tallahassee and was a member of Cookeville Masonic Lodge 266 F & A.M. Egypt Temple and Scottish Rite Bodies. She was born in Kentucky, a daughter of the late John and Sallie McKinney Caudill, and had lived most of her life in Bristol. She was the widow of Ralph Wayne Williams and was a member of Grace Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Chester Caudill, Edward Caudill and Ed Caudill, one sister, Belva Rutter, and one great-granddaughter, Brianna Williams. Letha Morris Wood Letha Morris Wood, formerly of Montclair, died Friday, Nov. 7, at Francis Marion Manor, Marion. She came to Montclair shortly after her marriage in 1932 to John Wintringer Wood. In declining health, she moved to Virginia in 1990 to be closer to her younger daughter, Nancy Wintringer Wood of 9169 Moore Creek Rd., Meadowview. Born in Tacoma, Wash., in 1910 and raised in Pasadena, Calif., she graduated from Sweet Briar College, with a bachelor’s degree in French. Always loving her life in Montclair, Letha was very involved in civic activities during her many years in Montclair. These included the PTA, the Red Cross and the First Congregational Church. Letha’s husband, Jack, died in May, 1970. Her older daughter, Lee Audhuy, a professor at the University of Toulouse, France, passed away in October, 1999. Her only survivor is her daughter in Virginia and very dear friends, including the Rev. and Mrs. Oscar Mockridge III of Montclair. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held in the Chapel of Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion, at 3 p.m. Nov. 16. Wright, 72, of Stewart Mill Road, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at Emory University Hospital following an extended illness. He was born May 13, 1931, in Bristol Virginia, the son of the late Ernest G. Wright and the late Mrs. Eddie Burnett Wright. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean conflict. He married Beulah "Bea" Johnson on May 22, 1992. He was a member of Pembrooke Christian Church in Pembrooke, Ga., and retired as a maintenance engineer from Hershey Foods Corporation. Mr. Wright enjoyed hunting, fishing and collecting antiques, especially tractors and old trucks. In his younger days, he enjoyed playing golf. He loved watching Christian TV.
