She was a member of the Shady Grove United Methodist Church. Mrs. Arnold retired from Pearce Cleaners in Abingdon. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Della Arnold of Abingdon and Denzil and Betty J. Arnold of Abingdon; one sister, Katherine Smythe; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild. He was a native of Bristol Virginia and the son of the late Paul and Elizabeth Crowe Ault. He was a graduate of Virginia High School and attended East Tennessee State University. He served six years with the Tennessee National Guard and retired from the Tri-State Corporation of Bristol Tennessee. He had lived in South Carolina for several years. Survivors include one son, Paul Ralph Ault of Green Cove, Fla.; one sister, Kathy Leonard of Bristol Virginia; one niece, Beth Francisco of Bristol Virginia, and two aunts, Louise Crowe Lark and husband Bob of Bristol Virginia and Ruth Crowe Oliver and husband Richard of Bristol Tennessee. Marvin Barker BIG STONE GAP – Marvin "Buddy" Barker, 78, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, at Wellmont-Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport. "Buddy," as he was known to many of his friends, graduated from Big Stone Gap High School, Emory & Henry College and George Peabody College. He was very active in many sports while in school and excelled in several while at Emory; Buddy played football for the Wasps and participated in the Tangerine Bowl. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Air Corps at the University of North Carolina. Marvin B. was a teacher, coach, principal, supervisor and director of education for 43 years, 42 of those were in Wise County, Va. He started the football program at Pound High School. He was a choir director and Sunday School teacher at Pound Methodist Church for many years, as well as a member of the musical group "Southlanders." Buddy was an avid golfer and a passionate college football watcher and follower. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sally Robinson, his parents, Dave and Anna (Burchette) Barker, and a sister, Joan Barker. Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Cecelia Munsey; daughter, Susan Bolling; brother, David Barker and his wife Margaret Ann; two stepdaughters, Nancy Shoop and Linda Munsey; three grandchildren, Chesney, Brandon and Aaron, and three step-grandchildren, Michael, Sara and Leah. Ona Slone Belcher ABINGDON – Mrs. Ona Slone Belcher, age 74, passed away Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, at the Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was born in Pike County, Ky., and had lived many years in Grundy before moving to Abingdon. She was a member of the Pilgrim Baptist Church, where she was president of the Senior Pilgrims and a former member of the Grundy Baptist Church. Ona was retired from the Grundy Post Office and preceded in death by her husband, Franklin R. Belcher. She is survived by her son, Brian Belcher and wife Gail of Vansant, Va.; her daughters, Karen Belcher Cecil and husband Bill of Madison Heights, Va., and Cheryl Belcher Matney of Roanoke; a brother, Lon Slone of Paris, Ky.; a sister, Sonia Rittenbacker of Chicago, and four grandchildren, Wesley Wright, Matthew Belcher, Kristopher Cecil and Michael Belcher. Curtis Patton Casey SWORDS CREEK, Va. – Mr. Curtis Patton Casey, age 77, of the Long Branch section, passed away Sunday morning, Nov. 16, 2003, in a Richlands hospital. Born Dec. 25, 1925, in Swords Creek, he was a son of the late Albert "Bud" and Ocie Hale Casey. A life-long resident of the Swords Creek area, he was of the Holiness faith. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Philippines during World War II. He was a life member of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post 9640, the DAV Chapter 31, Improved Order of Red Men Tribe 61, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Pocahontas, and Rebekahs of Richlands. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nora Casey, on Nov. 5, 2003, one son, Trudy Garland Casey, one daughter, Peggy Gaynelle Blankenship, and one brother, Charlie Casey. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Carlies and Debbie Casey and George Douglas and Barbara Casey, all of Swords Creek, and Carson Eugene Casey of Claremont, N.C.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Nila Genette and Thurman Bostic of Honaker, Mavis Lee and Ralph Wingler of Chapmansville, W.Va., and Katie Juanita and David Osborne of Catawba, N.C.; one sister, Louise Turner of Martinsville, Va.; four half-brothers, Giles Hughes of Swords Creek and Douglas Casey, Alvin Casey and Norman Casey, all of Richlands; two half-sisters, Barbara Moyer and Mary Osborne, both of Raven, Va., and several grandchildren, great- grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren also survive. Harrison ABINGDON – Mrs. Odessa Brown Harrison, age 80, passed away Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, at the Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was born June 3, 1923, in Abingdon, had lived in Washington, D.C., but spent most of her life in Abingdon. She was a faithful member of the Charles Wesley United Methodist Church, where she was on the Board of Trustees and the Board of Treasury. Odessa was a former employee of the Johnston Memorial Hospital and retired from Abingdon High School. She was a member of the Abingdon Senior Citizens and was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin F. Harrison Sr., and a granddaughter, Stephanie Elizabeth Hayden. She is survived by two sons, Benjamin Franklin Harrison Jr. and wife Vondell Zina of Stafford, Va., and Herbert Peter Harrison and wife Deborah Grace of Charleston, S.C.; grandchildren, Daniel Allen Laws, John Thomas Laws, Maria DeAngela Harrison, Jason Ev’rett Harrison and Tracy Denice Harrison; 10 great- grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, including Vanessa Anderson, Lindsey Hubner and Ulysses Cox Jr., and a special longtime friend, Credell Fonte’. Pickle BRISTOL, Tenn. – James Kenneth Pickle, age 77, 1341 King College Road, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, in Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Burdine, Ky., and a son of the late Ray and Pearl Miller Pickle. He was retired from the U.S. Military with over 22 years combined service in U.S. Navy, U.S. Army and U. S. Air Force. He attended Fairmount Presbyterian Church and was a member of King Masonic Lodge. He was former co- owner of Wooden Nickle Restaurant, served on the Sullivan County Beer Board, was avid gardener and was active supporter of Bluff City and Sullivan East sports programs.
