Arnold ABINGDON– Garnett Albert Arnold, age 89, a resident of 348 Roberta St., died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, at her residence. She was born in Cedar Bluff to the late Bert and Ruth Stamper Doughten. She was a founding member of the Shady Grove United Methodist Church. Mrs. Arnold retired from Pearce Dry Cleaners in Abingdon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Arnold; three sisters, Mamie Burnette and Nellie and Trula Doughton; and stepbrother, Joe Doughten. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in- law: Jerry and Della Arnold of Abingdon; and Denzil and Betty J. Arnold of Abingdon; one sister, Katherine Smythe of Bristol Tennessee; six grandchildren, Mike Arnold, Angie Arnold, and Sharon Flanders, all of Abingdon, Debbie Kiser of Bluff City and Susan Dugger and Kimberley Hurd, both of Bristol Virginia; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great- grandchild. Edith Viola Artrip CLEVELAND, Va.– Edith Viola Artrip, 88, passed away on Monday, Nov. 17, 2003. She was born on Sept. 21, 1915, and was the daughter of the late James W. and Evaline M. Artrip. Ms. Artrip was a lifelong resident of Russell County, Va., and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Paul J. Artrip, Clifford H. Artrip, Dorsey C. Artrip and Rass L. Artrip; and two sisters, Willie Lois Artrip and Eliza A. Sykes. She is survived by her sisters, Ruth A. Fife of Lebanon and Mildred A. Bowman of Villas, N.J.; and numerous nieces and nephews also survive. A graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. at the Artrip Family Cemetery, Artrip, Va. Marvin Barker BIG STONE GAP– Marvin "Buddy" Barker, 78, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, at Wellmont-Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport. "Buddy," as he was known to many of his friends, graduated from Big Stone Gap High School, Emory & Henry College and George Peabody College. He was very active in many sports while in school and excelled in several. While at Emory, Buddy played football for the Wasps and participated in the Tangerine Bowl. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Air Corps at the University of North Carolina. Marvin B. was a teacher, coach, principal, supervisor and director of education for 43 years, 42 of which were in Wise County, Va. He started the football program at Pound High School. He was a choir director and Sunday School teacher at Pound Methodist Church for many years, as well as a member of the musical group "Southlanders." Buddy was an avid golfer and a passionate college football watcher and follower. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sally Robinson, his parents, Dave and Anna (Burchette) Barker, and a sister, Joan Barker. Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Cecelia Munsey; daughter, Susan Bolling; brother, David Barker and his wife Margaret Ann; two stepdaughters, Nancy Shoop and Linda Munsey; three grandchildren, Chesney, Brandon and Aaron, and three step-grandchildren, Michael, Sara and Leah. Bussey ABINGDON – Janice Goodpasture Bussey, 57, passed away Sunday, Nov. 16, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. She was born in Johnson City, grew up in Bristol Tennessee and had lived in Abingdon for 35 years. She was the daughter of the late Malcolm and Myrtle Swiney Goodpasture of Bristol. Survivors include her husband, Luther Bussey, Abingdon; two sons: Christopher Bradley Bussey and his wife, Becky; and Gregory Brent Bussey and his wife, Amy, all of Abingdon; a brother, Joe Goodpasture and his wife, Ann, Abingdon; a sister, Patsy Musick and her husband, Eddie, Winchester, Va.; four grandchildren, Lydia, Julia, Haleigh and Carter Bussey; and a number of very special nieces, nephews, cousins and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Mrs. Bussey received her RN degree from Johnston Memorial School of Nursing and was an honors graduate of Bluefield College. A well-known and highly respected nursing educator, she retired after 31 years as a health occupations instructor at the Neff Center for Science and Technology. More recently, she had been an instructor at Virginia Highlands Community College and performed on­site reviews for the Virginia State Board of Nursing. She was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the choir and active in a number of church activities. He was born in Volls Creek, W.Va., and had only spent the past five years in Bristol Virginia. He was the son of late Aurther and Kezzy Earls Stevenson. He was also preceded in death by one brother and two sisters. Mr. Stevenson was a retired coal miner and farmer. He was of Baptist faith. Born in Buchanan County, July 21, 1934, he was the son of the late Milton Ward and Rosa Percillia Ward. He was a retired coal truck driver. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Victoria Ward, Loretta Griggsby and Linda Sue Vandyke; one half-sister, Geneva Fuller; and one brother, Thomas Ward. He is survived by his wife, Marion Ward Ward of New Port Richie, Fla.; three daughters: Mrs. Bill (Leslie) Emswiller and Mrs. Ricky (Melisa) Byrd, both of Roanoke; and Ann Marie McNiss of Deepwater, N.J.; three stepdaughters: Darlene Pool and Marlene Coykendall, both of New Port Richie; and Brenda Hutchinson of Tampa, Fla.; one son, Kenny Ward of New Port Richie; two stepsons, Michael Ward and Jimmy Ward, both of New Port Richie; four sisters: Mrs. Richard (Gaynell) Dyer of Johnstown, Ohio; Mrs. Robert (Margaret) Taylor of Taylor, S.C.; Mrs. Lewis (Joyce Ann) Vandyke of Abingdon; and Mrs. Robert (Betty) Hamilton of Chicago; two brothers: Harry Ward of Smith Mountain Lake, Va.; and Milton Ward Jr. of Lebanon. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Leland Floyd "Frog" Ward will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel, Grundy, with Rev. Rusty Ward and Rev. Troy Lester officiating. Burial will follow in the Ward Cemetery at Whitewood, Va. Active pallbearers will be family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Vandyke and Mark Vandyke. The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 6:00 p.m. Tuesday evening. Services will be held Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The family of Leland Floyd "Frog" Ward is being served by Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home of Grundy.
