Boser CHILHOWIE – Virginia Elizabeth Matthews Gillenwater Boser, 85, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, in the Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie. She was born in Carroll County, Va., and was the daughter of the late Fred Creed and Linnie Hill Matthews. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Lenroy Scott "Gilly" Gillenwater, her second husband, Lyle Irvin Boser, and two brothers, Ralph Matthews and Corvin Matthews. She was a member of the Chilhowie United Methodist Church. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, James and Wilma Martin Gillenwater, Chilhowie; one sister, Mildred McGhee, Seven Mile Ford, Va., also several nieces and nephews. Annie Buchanan ABINGDON – Mrs. Anne Perkinson Buchanan, age 76, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. Anne Buchanan grew up in Glen Allen, Va., and was a secretary in state government in Richmond. In 1949, she married Dr. Archibald Chapman Buchanan Jr. and they moved to Abingdon. She was a member of the Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church, where she was active in various activities, including the church circle. Anne was a supporter of the arts, including Barter Theatre and the William King Arts Center, and she was a long-term member of the Book Lovers Club. Dr. and Mrs. Buchanan were members of the Glenrochie Country Club for many years and they both loved golf. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Archibald Chapman Buchanan Jr., and her father, Robert L. Perkinson. Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Shepherd and husband David Shepherd, Vienna, Va.; a son, Archibald Chapman Buchanan III and his wife Michelle Buchanan, Knoxville; her mother, Maudie Perkinson, Ashland, Va.; a sister, Doris Zimmerman, Baltimore, and three grandchildren, Lauren Buchanan, Ben Shepherd and Julie Shepherd. Frances Mary Fuller NORTON – Frances Mary Fuller, 93, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, at Norton Community Hospital. Born to the late George S. and Birdie Reed Fuller, she was one of seven children. Miss Fuller was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the European Theater of World War II. As a war time nurse then, Lt. Fuller saw duty with General Patton’s 3rd Army in England and in France, following the D-Day invasion. She was a registered nurse, working in several of the Norton area hospitals and was a nurse of the Job Corps at her retirement. She was a member of the Norton United Methodist Church and VFW Post 4301 of Norton. She was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, George S. Fuller III, Dr. Judge Fuller, Kyle Fuller, Duke Helmer Fuller, Helen E. Mullins and Edna Mann Fuller, and by a niece, Marjorie Marie "Tiny" Fuller Foster. William Henry Sykes ABINGDON – William Henry Sykes, 92, of 16422 Southwood Drive, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at the Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was born Dec. 9, 1910, in Russell County, a son of the late Levi and Florence Ashby Sykes, and was the husband of the late Georgia Hazel Sykes. A retired coal miner, he was a member of the Reeds Valley Methodist Church. He was the last survivor of his family. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sons, Arvil Sykes and Clyde Sykes, one grandson and 11 brothers and sisters. Survivors include a son, William Kenneth Sykes and wife Dorothy, Bristol Virginia; two daughters-in-law, Shirley Sykes and Froncee Sykes, both of Abingdon; six grandsons; eight granddaughters and 15 great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20. 2003, in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel, with the Rev. Jimmy Huffman and the Rev. Clyde Lambert officiating. Burial will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at the funeral home. Combs Funeral Service in Lebanon is serving the family of Mr. Sykes. Luther M. Talbert CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Dr. Luther M. Talbert died peacefully Nov. 17, 2003, at his home. Dr. Talbert was born Dec. 30, 1926, near Meadowview, to the late Marcus A. and Mary Thompson Talbert. He graduated from Meadowview High School in 1943 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served for the duration of World War II. He returned to Washington County to attend Emory & Henry College and upon graduation, began his medical training at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. After completing his training in 1958, he joined the faculty at the University of North Carolina. Dr. Talbert was clinician, researcher and teacher at UNC until his retirement in 1993. He was instrumental in establishing the North Carolina Health and Education Centers (AHEC) to provide continuing education for North Carolina physicians. Dr. Talbert served as director of the UNC Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Fertility and director for the In Vitro Fertilization/Gift Program. He served in numerous positions of leadership for his profession, including service as director for the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Upon his retirement from UNC, he embarked on a second career as a leader for the North Carolina Center for Reproductive Medicine in Cary, N.C., now named the Talbert Fertility Institute in his honor. Dr. Talbert was able to continue his work until August, 2003. He treasured his relationships with his colleagues and patients and often reflected on his good fortune to have worked with, and on behalf of, so many wonderful people. He was recently rewarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine for all his unwavering commitment to women’s health and dedicated service to the state of North Carolina. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Elizabeth Neese. Dr. Talbert is survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife, Annie B. Edmondson Talbert; children, John and wife Cheryl, Seattle, Luther and wife Hope of Bozeman, Mont., and Cay Bacon, Tampa, Fla.; grandchildren, Ryan and Caytie, Seattle, Molly and Kristine, Bozeman, and Catherine and Luke of Tampa; a brother, John; sisters, Eleanor, Eva, and Becky, along with numerous nieces and nephews. His love for, and belief in, all members of his family is a continued inspiration. The graveside service will be conducted Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the Greenfield Baptist Cemetery, Meadowview, with Dr. Robert Seymore.
