Talbert CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Dr. Luther M. Talbert died peacefully Nov. 17, 2003, at his home. Dr. Talbert was born Dec. 30, 1926, near Meadowview, to the late Marcus A. and Mary Thompson Talbert. He graduated from Meadowview High School in 1943 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served for the duration of World War II. He returned to Washington County to attend Emory & Henry College and upon graduation, began his medical training at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. After completing his training in 1958, he joined the faculty at the University of North Carolina. Dr. Talbert was clinician, researcher and teacher at UNC until his retirement in 1993. He was instrumental in establishing the North Carolina Area Health and Education Centers (AHEC) to provide continuing education for North Carolina physicians. Dr. Talbert served as director of the UNC Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Fertility and director for the In Vitro Fertilization/Gift Program. He served in numerous positions of leadership for his profession, including service as director for the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Upon his retirement from UNC, he embarked on a second career as a leader for the North Carolina Center for Reproductive Medicine in Cary, N.C., now named the Talbert Fertility Institute in his honor. Dr. Talbert was able to continue his work until August, 2003. He treasured his relationships with his colleagues and patients and often reflected on his good fortune to have worked with, and on behalf of, so many wonderful people. He was recently rewarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine for all his unwavering commitment to women’s health and dedicated service to the state of North Carolina. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Elizabeth Neese. Dr. Talbert is survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife, Annie B. Edmondson Talbert; children, John and wife Cheryl, Seattle, Luther and wife Hope of Bozeman, Mont., and Cay Bacon, Tampa, Fla.; grandchildren, Ryan and Caytie, Seattle, Molly and Kristine, Bozeman, and Catherine and Luke of Tampa; a brother, John Talbert, and sisters, Eleanor Williams, Eva Edmondson, and Becky Gumm, along with numerous nieces and nephews. His love for, and belief in, all members of his family is a continued inspiration. The graveside service will be conducted Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the Greenfield Baptist Cemetery, Meadowview, with Dr. Robert Seymore. Mary Aline Wells NORTON – Mary Aline Wells, age 93, peacefully departed this life on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003. Prior to moving to Norton in 1993, she had lived in Grundy for the past 54 years. She was of the Christian faith and a devoted and loving wife and mother. She had many friends, particularly at the Norton Senior Center, which she had attended faithfully for several years. She will be remembered for the lovely crocheted items she made for years and shared with her loved ones. She also enjoyed reading and working crossword puzzles. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank E. Wells, on Aug. 5, 1991. She was also predeceased by her parents, Kemper and Hattie Aliff, seven brothers and two sisters. She leaves behind to celebrate her life and mourn her passing two children, a daughter and husband, Linda and General Walker of Norton, and a son, Frank E. Wells Jr., of Walnut Cove, N.C. Also surviving are grandchildren, David and LuAnn Walker of Norton, Neil and Beth Walker of Big Stone Gap, Courtne Wells and Dave Brunt of Tobaccoville, N.C., Paul Wells of Walnut Cove and Shannon and Mike Warren of Rural Hall, N.C. Amanda Lynn Wood RICHLANDS – Amanda Lynn Wood, 27, of 609 Sid Eaves Road, Youngsville, N.C., died Monday, Nov. 17, 2003. Leonard Lee Wood BRISTOL, Va. – Leonard Lee Wood, age 73, passed on into Heaven’s eternal rest on Tuesday night, Nov. 18, 2003, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center after a lingering illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andy Floyd and Lula Ann Stanley Wood, four sisters, Draxie, Maxie, Gaynell and Lula, and two brothers Andrew and Earl. He is survived by the love of his life, his loving and devoted wife, Fay; his daughter and son-in-law, Susie and Benny Yates; and Benny’s mom, Sis Yates, all of Abingdon; six sisters, Prencie Turner, Clara Carmack and Jane Baker, all of Clinchco, Maggie Barton of Bristol, Geneva Thoman of Whittier, Calif., and Julie Cropper of Whaleysville, Md., and two brothers, Troy Wood, Clinchco, and Roby Wood, Millsboro, Del. Funeral services for Leonard Lee Wood will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the Clintwood Funeral Home, with Ministers Lynn Vanover and Gary Stanley officiating.
