Ruby Blevins Ruby LaVerne Hodel Blevins, age 80, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003, at the home of her daughter after an eight-year struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born on Dec. 26, 1922, in Childress, Texas, to Otto and Hazel Hodel. She married Burl F. Blevins on Jan. 26, 1946, and resided in Bristol Tennessee for over fifty years. She was the owner of Blevins Construction in Abingdon which her husband founded in 1954. She was a faithful member of the State Street Church of Christ and was known for her compassion and love for others. She was preceded in death by her husband Burl Blevins, and grandson, David Dutton. She is survived by her daughter, Janet Cook and husband Kenneth of Abingdon; and sons, Larry Blevins and wife Sharon of Herndon, Va., and Rick Blevins of Abingdon; grandchildren, Susan Ruble and husband Tim, Sarah Dutton, Matthew Dutton, Leigh Toweson and husband Kyle and Erin Blevins; great-grand-daughter, Madalyn Ruble; sister, Dee Riddle and husband Tom of Edmond, Okla., and brother, Max Hodel and wife Joanne of Anchorage, Alaska. Wanda Goodloe BRISTOL, Tenn. – Wanda Marcell Inscore Goodloe, 51, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003, at Wellmont Hospice House. She was born in Abingdon and was the daughter of James H. Inscore and Bruxie Harris Inscore. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five baby brothers. Survivors include her daughter, Hope Goodloe of Bristol Tennessee; her son, Allen Goodloe of Concord, N.C.; four sisters, Nora Gottschalk, Louella Wolfe, Dixie Chapman and Judy Rowlette; four brothers, Roger Inscore, Charlie Inscore, Jimmy Inscore and Ted Inscore, and several nieces and nephews. Wanda was a faithful charter member of Keys Street Pentecostal Church and an active member of the Chosen Prayer Warriors. Arvel Newberry SPEEDWELL, Va. – Arvel James Newberry, age 75, passed away Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at his home. He was born in Richlands on June 24, 1928, the son of the late Stuart and Ethel Palmer Newberry. Mr. Newberry was a retired miner with the UMWA and a retired mine inspector with the state of Virginia. He was a member of the Peach Bottom Primitive Baptist Church in Grayson County, Va., and was preceded in death by a son, Larry James Newberry. He is survived by his wife, Eva Arnold Newberry of the home; two sons, Dwight Newberry and spouse Darlene and Allen Newberry, all of Raven, Va.; one sister, Frances Dye of Tazewell, and one brother, Mervin Newberry of Lynchburg, Va. Howard H. Sandefur GLADE SPRING – Mr. Howard "Erk" Harrison Sandefur, age 85, died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003, in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. Mr. Sandefur was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, four sisters and his first wife, Pearl Mercer Sandefur. He was a member of the 461st AAA AW Battalion. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, a retired employee of 32 years with Sprint Telecommunications and a member of the former Plasterco United Methodist church where he served in various capacities and also a member of the Washington Springs United Methodist Church. Mr Sandefur was a member of the Glade Spring Masonic Lodge # 236. Survivors include his wife, Maxine Moon Marrs Sandefur; one daughter, Judy and Ken Elledge of Cleveland, Tenn.; one stepson, Randy and Carole Marrs of Asheville, N.C., and three grandchildren, Jared Elledge and Aaron Elledge, both of Cleveland, and Sarah and Jay Webb of Harrisonburg, Va. Gary Lee Sturgill WISE – Gary Lee Sturgill, age 63, passed away Friday morning, Nov. 21, 2003, at the Mountain Home Veterans Administration Hospital, Mountain Home, Tenn. He was born in Wise County, Va., and was a life-long resident. He had worked as the manager of Glen’s Finer Homes, Coeburn. Mr. Sturgill was a United States Army Veteran, having served during the Korean conflict. He attended Zion Family Ministeries, Wise. He was a son of the late Leonard and Vonda Collins Sturgill and was also preceded in death by a son, Christopher Lee Sturgill, and two brothers, Carrol Sturgill and Johnny Sturgill. Merlie Melissa Wallace MONETA, Va. – Merlie Melissa Wallace, 79, died peacefully on Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was born Oct. 21, 1924, in Russell County, Va., a daughter of the late William Patton Robinson and Cora Meldonia Robinson. She lived in Bristol, Tennessee for 30 years and had made her home at Smith Mountain Lake in Moneta the last 21 years. Mrs. Wallace was a loving woman who cherished her role as wife and homemaker. She was a friend to all and believed "family" was a person’s greatest blessing. She was a member of Spring City Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a husband, Aubrey Rasnic, a brother, Jimmy Robinson, and two sisters, Audrey Williams and Virgie McCloud. She is survived by her husband of 21 years, Nuel L. Wallace; a niece whom she claimed as a daughter, Nancy Hickman and her husband Bill of Piney Flats; and their daughters, whom she claimed as granddaughters, Mrs. Rick (Nicole) Phelps of Swannanoa, N.C., and Renee Hickman of Knoxville; a brother, Newlin Robinson of Cedar Bluff; two sisters, Beulah Hubble of Bristol, Va., and Mrs. George (Mabel) Thomas of Lebanon; a stepdaughter, Mrs. John (Loretta) Yeaman and her family of Martinsville, Va., and a stepson, Butch Wallace and his family of Roanoke. "Kenny" Roberts, 57, of McIntosh, FL, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, November 18, 2003, at his residence. Mr. Roberts was born on December 16, 1945, in Sullivan County, TN. Mr. Roberts attended Holston High School and received his GED while in the Army. While serving his country, Mr. Roberts did a tour of duty in Vietnam and was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant. He had lived in Florida most of his adult life. Military Honors will be conducted by the Charles DeWitt Byrd VFW Post 3382 of Kingsport. The family will have a private visitation at the funeral home at 9 AM, Monday. Those who plan to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home by 9:25 AM, Monday, to go in procession to Mountain Home.
