Ruby LaVerne Blevins ABINGDON – Mrs. Ruby LaVerne Hodel Blevins, age 80, passed away on November 22, 2003, at the home of her daughter after an eight-year struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born on December 26, 1922, in Childress, Texas, to Otto and Hazel Hodel. She married Burl F. Blevins on January 27, 1946, and resided in Bristol Tennessee for over 50 years. She was the owner of Blevins Construction in Abingdon, which her husband founded in 1954. She was a faithful member of the State Street Church of Christ and was known for her compassion and love for others. She was preceded in death by her husband, Burl F. Blevins; and a grandson, David Dutton. She is survived by her daughter, Janet Cook and husband, Kenneth of Abingdon; sons, Larry Blevins and wife, Sharon of Herndon, Va., and Rick Blevins of Abingdon; grandchildren, Susan Ruble and husband, Tim, Sarah Dutton, Matthew Dutton, Leigh Toweson and husband, Kyle, and Erin Blevins; great-granddaughter, Madalyn Ruble; sister, Dee Riddle and husband, Tom of Edmond, Okla., and brother, Max Hodel and wife, Joanne of Anchorage, Alaska. Benny Chappell BLOUNTVILLE – Benny Chappell, 73, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 22, 2003, at Wellmont Hospice House. He was born in Sullivan County, Tenn., a son of the late Walter E. and Augusta Gertrude Webb Chappell, and was a life-long resident of Sullivan County. He was a charter member of Bellemont Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder for many years. He started his career at the age of 14, working for the Worley Fain Dairy Farm. Later, he worked at Pinemont Dairy, at Bassett’s Dairy for 25 years and retired from the Sullivan County School Maintenance Department. For many years, he was self-employed as an appliance and air conditioning repair serviceman. He was much loved for his help to many in the Tri-Cities area. He received an associate degree in air conditioning and refrigeration from Virginia Highlands Community College. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Edna Williams; brothers, Leonard Chappell and Paul Chappell; and a special friend, Fred Harlan. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Shirley Whiteman Chappell; two daughters, Joanne Tolliver and husband, Earl Tolliver, Bristol Tennessee, and Sharon Lauderbaugh and husband, John D. "Skip" Lauderbaugh, of Jacksonville, Fla.; a son, Mark Chappell and wife, Sue Chappell, of Blountville; four sisters, Ina Brooks, Pauline Rudzenski, Florence Held and Mildred Reece; a brother, Robert Chappell; six grandsons, Benjamin Tolliver, Jonathan and Jared Chappell, T.J and Cody Lauderaugh and Wesley Smeltzer; and several nieces and nephews. Ralph Clevinger MAVISDALE, Va. – Mr. Ralph Clevinger, age 72, passed away Friday, November 21, 2003, in a Bristol Tennessee hospital following a brief illness. He was the son of the late Ed and Merabie Clevinger and was a retired truck driver for the Virginia Department of Transportation. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mrs. Nellie Clevinger; one brother, Lester Clevinger; and one sister, Jeanette Clevinger. Bonnie Cunningham Bonnie O’Dell Cunningham, 94, formerly of Bristol, TN, died Saturday, November 22, 2003, at Christian City Convalescent Home, Union City, Ga. She was born April 8, 1909, in Sullivan County, TN, a daughter of the late Joseph Daniel and Ella Lea Bullock Odell. A long-time resident of Bristol Tennessee, Bonnie attended school, married, raised her family and was a help- mate to her husband, Raymond E. Cunningham Sr., who owned and operated the West End Grocery on West State Street in Bristol. Bonnie grew up in the Christian church and was a member initially of the Central Holston Christian Church in Sullivan County, a member of Central Christian Church and later a member of West Hills Christian Church in Bristol Tennessee. At the time of her death, she was a member of Spring Road Christian Church near West Point, Ga., where she resided from 1985-1997. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, R. E. "Eddie" Cunningham Jr. Mrs. Cunningham is survived by her daughter, Jane C. Ottmann and husband, Barrington D. (Jack), of Atlanta; her son, Robert J. Cunningham and his wife, Susan, of Auburn, Ala.; her dear sister, Alice O. Jenkins of Smyrna, Ga.; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was born May 14, 1922, in Bristol Virginia and she lived all of her life in the Bristol area. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. She is the widow of Albert C. Born January 2, 1928, in Raven, Va., she was the daughter of the late Walker and Maudie Vance Dye. She was raised by her grandparents, Abbie and Margie Dye. She had lived in Honaker, in Gardner section, until moving the Blountville two years ago. She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She attended Honaker United Methodist Church and will be missed by all who knew her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward G. Hale; one daughter, Martha Musick; and one brother, Clarence Dye. Main St., died Sunday, November 23, 2003, at Princeton Health Care Center in Princeton. Born May 27, 1913, at Weyanoke, she was the daughter of the late Oscar Short and Lydia Moore Short. Mrs. Shuck was a member of Bailey Memorial Baptist Church. She owned and operated the Students Snack Bar in Matoaka for 20 years and was a former member of the Matoaka Garden Club. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Steve Short, Pat Short and Cletis Short; and five sisters, Maggie Burnette, Minnie Ragan, Mae Mack, Ada Thompson and Myrtle Bailey. Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Giles B. Kenneth Warner CLEVELAND, Va. – Kenneth Warner, 71, of the Spring City community, died Sunday, November 23, 2003, in the Mountain View Retirement Home. Born January 21, 1932, in Russell County, a son of the late Carl H. Warner and Emphis Wallace Warner, he was a retired foreman for the Virginia Department of Transportation with 32 years of service, and a cattle farmer. He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Yolanda Gail Warner; and a brother, Billy Warner. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Clara Warner; a son, Keenan Warner and his wife Jeannie; a grandson, Brad Warner; two granddaughters, Kait and Kellin Warner, all of Cleveland; his twin brother, Kaney Warner and wife Nancy, Castlewood, and a brother, Perry Warner and wife Dana, Kingsport; a sister, Sue Lester and husband Gene, Cleveland; two sisters-in-law, Betty Warner, Lebanon and Eva Maude Koch, Castlewood; also several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel, with the Rev. Rick Wallace and the Rev. Steve Osborne officiating. Burial will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens. Serving the family as pallbearers will be: Rush Gamble, Richard Thayer, Tim Wallace, John Nash, J. J. Cole, Mark Warner and Michael Warner. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Dwight Bailey, Dr. Ben Cowan and the employee’s of VDOT, Highpoint area. The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, at the funeral home.
