She was a native of Mountain City, Tenn., and had lived in Damascus for the past few years. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mildred Scott. She is survived by two daughters: Kendra Scott, of Landenberg, Pa.; and Heather Ranck, of Mountain City, Tenn.; one son, Chris Ranck, of Mountain City; one grandson, Wyatt Phipps; her father, R. Taylor Scott, of Shady Valley, Tenn.; three aunts: Eva Owens, of Sebring, Fla.; and Glenna Barton and Irene Blevins, both of Shady Valley; and one uncle, Charles Scott, of Shady Valley. The funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, in the Garrett Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Eddie Porter officiating. Blackburn, 75 years of age of the Bend of Slate section, passed away Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at the Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the Oliver and Virgie Stacy Blackburn. He was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church and a retired body shop operator. Mr. Blackburn is survived by his wife, Ava G. Looney Blackburn of Grundy; one daughter, Mrs. Larry (Beverly) Thomas of Ozark, Ala.; and one grandson, Larry Thomas II of Ozark. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his foster parents, Chester and Vinnie Collins; one brother, Kermit Blackburn; and one sister, Pinkie Fouts. Blackburn will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel, with Evangelist Michael Trent officiating, with burial to follow in the Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery, Richlands. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy is in charge of all arrangements. Minnie Sue Boggs POUND – Minnie Sue Anders Boggs, 81, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at Holston Valley Medical Center. She was born in Lee County, Va., on September 5, 1922, and was the daughter of the late Ed and Pearl Wynn Anders. Mrs. Boggs was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, William Albert Moore; second husband, Avis Boggs; son, Albert Lee Moore; and several brothers and sisters. Surviving are special daughter-in-law, Marie Moore, Pound; grandchildren, Tim, Dennis, and Adrian Moore; great-grandchildren, Meghan, Kari, Rachel, Molly, Samantha and Bryce Moore; half brother, Bobby Anders, Huntington, W.Va.; special friend, Maude Ellison; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at Sturgill Funeral Home, Wise, and anytime at the residence of Marie Moore. Combs Winnie Mahaffey Combs, 96, of the Holston Valley Community of Sullivan County, died Thursday, Dec, 4, 2003, at her home. She was a daughter of the late David and Mary Elizabeth Mahaffey and was the widow of John W. Combs. She was a member of Cold Spring Presbyterian Church, where she was active in many phases of church work. She was also involved in community and school projects as long as her health permitted. Survivors include two daughters, Betty Cook of Bristol Tennessee, and Sue Lewis of Surfside Beach, S.C.; two sons, John W. Combs Jr. of Coventry, R.I., and Gary G. Combs of Sacramento, Calif.; a brother, Earl Mahaffey of Bristol Tennessee; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ann Withers. The family will receive friends from 2 until 2:50 Saturday afternoon at Cold Spring Presbyterian Church, with the service to follow at 3 o’clock at the church. Bridgett Renea Stidham COEBURN – Bridgett Renea Stidham, 22, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at the St. Mary’s Hospital Norton. She was a 1999 graduate of Coeburn High School, attended the Banner Revival Center and was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Cecil Hoback in 2002, and paternal grandmother, Helen Stidham in 1998. She was a native of Huntington, W.Va., had made her home in Florida for many years and moved to Newland in 1998. She was the daughter of the late J.D. and Geraldine Davis Rodefer. Mrs. Wallace was a member of the Assembly of God. Survivors include her husband, Clyde Wallace; two daughters: Pamela Joanne Ingriam, of New Port Richey, Fla.; and Janet Darlene Caridas, of Elk Park, N.C.; one son, David Michael Wallace of the home; one brother, Robert A. Other Area Obits Harold Wayne Frisell – Johnson City Mr. Harold Wayne Frisell, 58, 1106 Miller Street, Johnson City, died on Friday, December 5, 2003, at his residence after an extended illness. A native of Creston, Iowa, Mr. Frisell was born on April 2, 1945, to the late Harold William & Elizabeth Jean Sharp Frisell. Mr. Frisell was a ten-year US Navy veteran serving in Vietnam. He was a construction supervisor for twenty-five years, working for the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamations. Mr. Frisell retired from government service in 1997. As a result of his hard work, he received several work-related awards for job excellence. He enjoyed playing golf and fishing. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Clayman Frisell, Johnson City; a son, David Wayne Frisell, Mesa, AZ; 2 sisters, Becky Collins, Iowa, and Charlotte Fontenot, Arkansas; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Frisell. A Celebration of Life Service for Mr. Frisell will be held at 6:00 PM, Sunday, December 7, 2003, in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services with Mr. William Anderson officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 – 6 PM on Sunday. A graveside and committal service will be held at 1:00 PM, Monday, in Mountain Home National Cemetery. Military Honors will be conducted by the Charles DeWitt Byrd VFW Post #3382. His family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Todd Anderson will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
