Born March 24, 1917, in Shelby County, Ohio, a son of the late William W. Byers and Anne Elizabeth Miles Byers, he had lived in Lebanon the past 20 years. He was a retired auto mechanic. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Beverly J. Smith, a brother and three sisters. Survivors include his companion, Wanda G. King; a daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Mike Kemp, Columbus, Ohio; six grandchildren, Jeffrey Kemp, Bradley Kemp, Michelle Cope, Ronda Mills, Tonia Rohlfs and Dondra Clark; also 11 great- grandchildren and a sister, Enid Fawley, Dayton, Ohio. Katherine Edmondson MEADOWVIEW – Mrs. Katherine Lester Edmondson, 83, died Thursday Dec. 4, 2003 at her home. Mrs. Edmondson was born Dec. 27, 1919, in the Maple Grove Community of Washington County to the late W.G. Lester and Elizabeth Brodie Lester. She was a member of Greenfield Baptist Church. She was a 1940 graduate of Madison College. Mrs. Edmondson was an elementary school teacher in Abingdon and Meadowview and retired from there after 38 years. She was a member of Meadowview Home Demonstration Club and Emory Community Club. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Frank H. Edmondson, two brothers, Bill Lester and Fred B. (Dot) Lester, and a special friend, Francis Flannagan. Survivors include one son, Frank (Bucky) Edmondson and wife Betty of Abingdon; two daughters, Susan Edmondson of Bristol Virginia and Kathy and husband Ron Owens of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; one brother, John K. Green Enterprises Inc., which was involved in home and condominium building and formerly owned and operated Bristol Mini Storage and Maytag Coin Laundry. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Joan Marfio Green; a daughter, Patricia Ann Johnson and her husband Jeff of Bristol Virginia; a son, Michael A. She attended Radford State College and was a graduate of East Tennessee State University, Johnson City. She was retired from Sullivan County Department of Education as a teacher for over 30 years. She taught at Andrew Johnson and Kingsley Elementary Schools. She was of the Baptist faith. She was a lifetime member of the National Education Association, the Tennessee Retired Teachers Association and the Sullivan County Retired Teacher Association. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kip Kennedy, her parents, John M. Bray and Cculda Robinson Bray, three sisters and three brothers. Michael Malone Sr. DAVIE, Fla. – Michael Brett Malone Sr., 63, passed away on Nov. 30, 2003. He was born March 28, 1940, in Springfield, Mass., and a resident of South Florida for 50 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Ruby Malone. He proudly served four years in the U.S. Air Force. He received his degrees in police science and criminology from Miami-Dade Community College, public Administration from St. Thomas University and Miami Police Academy University of Miami. His professional and dedicated police career spanned a period of 36 years. He served seven years as patrol officer, detective/investigator and captain with the City of Hialeah and 29 years as assistant police chief with the Dade County Public School Police Department. He loved the mountains, family genealogy, gospel music, his banjo and personal computer. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hollywood, Fla., served a term as deacon and truly loved the Lord. He felt blessed, his life enriched and loved all the friends he had made in Russell County, his home. A truly gently man to be remembered always with deepest love in our hearts and souls. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Joy Ann; beloved daughter, Deborah Ann (Dr. Owen) Hartness of Tennessee; and son, Michael Brett Malone Jr. (C.J. Poston SALTVILLE – Mr. Clifford G. Poston, age 79, went to be with his Lord Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, in the Smyth County Community Hospital . He was born Feb. 29, 1924, at Saltville, to the late Joseph and Gracie Talbert Poston. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Maude Boardwine Poston. He was a retired employee of Olin with 24 years of service and seven years of service with HAPCO. He was a U.S. Army/ Air Corps veteran, where he served in China, Burma and India during World War II. He was a member of the Hardy Roberts VFW Post 7328. He was of the Church of God faith. He is survived by two sons and their wives, Rev. J. Wayne and Norma Poston of Radford, Va., and Rev. Kenneth and Debbie Poston of Indian Valley, Va.; his sister, Nadine Chapman of Saltville, who was devoted and faithful to him during his illness; four grandchildren, Jennifer Duncan and husband Douglas of Christiansburg, Va., Kevin Poston of Radford, Angela Poston of Indian Valley and Kendra Poston of Indian Valley; he was looking forward to the birth of his first great-grandchild in January; two aunts, Etta Mae Wilcox of Meadowview and Ida Belle Cacy of Abingdon; he was a special uncle to several nieces and nephews, and his special friend, Keyla Davis, and good friend, Claude McElraft also survive. Rosenbaum, age 92, a former resident of Abingdon, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, in NHC Healthcare of Bristol in Bristol Virginia. She was a native of Virginia and had lived in Abingdon most of her life. She was a retired nurse and was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. She was the widow of Fred S. Rosenbaum. Survivors include three sisters-in-law, Dorcas C. Blevins of Ivanhoe, Va., and Hallie Slate and Dalphna Rosenbaum, both of Galax. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Campbell Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Weaver Funeral Home. Dorothy T. Staley MARION – Dorothy Thomas Staley, 93, died Friday, Dec. 5th, 2003, in the Francis Marion Manor. Born on Aug. 20, 1910, she was the daughter of the late James Emmitt and Wilhelmina McGhee Thomas. Mrs. Staley was educated at Randolph Macon Women’s College with subsequent post-graduate work at Duke University. She taught in the Smyth County School System, served as a research chemist with Lincoln Industries and worked as a laboratory technologist at Southwestern State Hospital. In May, 1946, she married Dr. Joseph Stuart Staley and accompanied him to India in the role as a medical missionary. They returned to Marion in 1953 and Dr. Staley established a medical practice and together they raised their family in Marion. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband in 1997 and two brothers, Lucien Thomas and James Emmitt Thomas II. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph Stuart Staley Jr. and wife Sara Hutchinson Staley and Emmitt Denton Staley and wife Sarah Sparger Staley, all of Marion; eight grandchildren, Sara Amber Staley, Susan Stuart Staley, Elizabeth Carrie Sparger, Robert Hamilton Sparger, Amory Elizabeth Sparger, Jessica Fawn Staley, Aaron Thomas Staley and Nathan Andrew Staley; three nieces and one nephew. William Turley MARION – William Curtis "Butch" Turley, age 76, born April 3, 1927, died Friday Dec. 5, 2003, in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. He was a native of Rich Valley Va., but resided for the last 15 years in Chilhowie. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Regina Ann Turley Barr. John Watson Sr. John "Jack" Webster Watson Sr. of 100 Netherland Lane, Apt. 237, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. Born June 11, 1919, in New York City, Jack spent part of his childhood in Havana, Cuba. He attended the University of Rhode Island before joining the U.S. Marine Corps and serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He moved to Kingsport in 1960 and worked as a textile engineer, retiring from Eastman Chemical Company in 1985 after 25 years service. Jack was an active communicant of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and a past member of the Vestry. He was a Boy Scout leader and volunteered with the Second Harvest Food Bank and the American Red Cross as a disaster relief worker. He was a Life Master duplicate bridge player. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Martin Watson, and sister, Edythe Elizabeth Watson. Surviving are three daughters, Elizabeth Ann Watson, Kingsport; Mary Lee "Mimi" Abels and husband Uwe, Greenville, S.C.; and Jane Bettman, St. Louis, Mo.; two sons, John Watson Jr. and wife Carole, St. Louis, and Richard Watson and wife Sara, Glasgow, Ky.; grandchildren, Marcus, Josef Weston and Jacob Carter Abels, Greenville, John Webster Watson III, Arlington, Va., Jessica Weston Watson, St. Louis, and Catherine Goodman and Mary Bruce Watson, Glasgow; one brother, Richard "Dick" Watson and wife Jean, Kingsport; several nieces and nephews and special friend, Catherine Smith, Bristol Virginia. Wright ABINGDON – Mrs. Thada Ernestine Arrington Wright, age 71, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Wright was born Sept. 3, 1932, to the late Hadley and Leona Castle Arrington. She was a retired bookkeeper and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include her husband, Kent Wright; two daughters, Cyntia Rees and husband George of Atlanta and Leisa Wright Moseley of Raleigh, N.C.; one brother, James Arrington of Grundy; one sister, Jean Arrington of Abingdon; a cousin, Shirley Stump of Bristol Virginia, and three grandchildren, Cameron and Courtney Rees and Lauren Moseley.
