Barker BIG STONE GAP – Margaret Ann Jones Barker, 67, passed away Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital after a long battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s Disease.) Margaret was a 1955 graduate of Big Stone Gap High School and attended Mountain Empire Community College. She was preceded in death by her parents, Maggie and Elmer Jones; sister-in-law, Joan Barker Lawson; and brother-in-law, Marvin "Buddy" Barker. Surviving are her husband of 33 years, David F. Barker Jr.; brother-in-law, Richard Lawson, Fayetteville, N.C.; sister-in-law, Cecelia Munsey, Big Stone Gap; devoted cousins, Morris and Norma Burchette, Norton; an aunt and devoted caregiver, Gladys Jones; aunts, Violet Jones, Mossi Jones, Genevie Jones and Annie Jones, all of Big Stone Gap; two uncles, Hubert Jones, Big Stone Gap, and Hardin Eldridge, Cincinnati; and devoted caregivers, Markeda Hall and Carol Phillips. Margaret had worked in health services most of her life, the last being 15 years at the Big Stone Gap Clinic and seven years with Holston Child and Family Center. She was an avid cake-maker and decorator, having made cakes for three generations in some families. Margaret was a faithful member of the Norton United Methodist Church and active in the Ladies’ Prayer Fellowship. She had been a member of the choir for 33 years. Visitation will be anytime at the home throughout the week. Funeral service will be on Saturday, Dec. 13, at 11:00 a.m. at the Norton United Methodist Church in Norton. Born on Dec. 7, 1919, in Oxford, Miss., he was the son of the late Robert and Addie Buford, and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church and was retired from District 3 Seniors Citizens. Virginia Long Burns ABINGDON – Virginia Long Burns, formerly of Willamsburg and Lebanon, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at her home after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Burns was born on Aug. 5, 1921, in Wise County, Va., daughter of former Virginia Sen. M.M. and Charlotte Tompkins Long. She attended Virginia Intermont College. She had been an active volunteer with the Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church, the hospital auxiliary, Bruton Parish in Williamsburg, the Arts Depot, the Auxiliary to Johnston Memorial Hospital and the Barter Theater in Abingdon. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence C. (Budley) Burns; and her daughter, Charlotte Burns Haner. Mrs. Burns is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James and Linda Burns of Duncansville, Pa.; her daughter and son-in-law, Anne and L. C. Noe of Erwin, Tenn.; her sister, Charlotte Brillhart of Abingdon; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a special friend and caregiver, Peggy Dutton. Mrs. Faulkenberry, a retired Southern Baptist missionary, passed away Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, in Myrtle Beach, S.C. She was born Dec. 14, 1924, in the Buffalo Community of Kershaw, to the late I.C. and Lelia Catoe Dorman. Grace, the perfect name for her, was a Southern Baptist missionary for more than 30 years, employed by the Southern Baptist Convention. She served the Lord by ministering to underprivileged people. Grace was also a Christian social minister. She gave food before telling about the bread of life. She served, along with her late husband, the Rev. S.L. Faulkenberry, in Pineville and Marrowbone, Ky.; the First Baptist Mission Center, Bristol Virginia; Franklin Street Mission, Lynchburg, Va., and Clinchco, Va., in the Appalachian mountains. Mrs. Faulkenberry served as a literacy consultant to Southwest Virginia for the Virginia Baptist General Board, wrote for Sunday School Board and WMU, SBC; leader, literacy workshop, Home Mission Week, Ridgecrest Conference Center; Mission Support chairman for WMU, Lynchburg Baptist Association; Clovis Brantley Award. HMB; E.A. McDowell Award HMB; spoke at the WMU meeting, Atlanta, and the Southern Baptist Convention. Mrs. Faulkenberry is survived by her daughter, Janet Brown of Myrtle Beach; two brothers, Roy Dorman, Kershaw, and Rev. John "Hub" Gray COEBURN – John "Hub" Gray, 73, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City. Mr. Gray was a retired coal miner of Clinchfield Coal Company, field representative for District 28 and a member of UMWA Local 1256. He was past president of Coeburn Little League and received a 50-year plaque for dedicated service, also past president of Pony League and organizer and past president of Coeburn Senior League. He was a Virginia High School League official in football and baseball and announced for many years football, baseball, and girls softball. He was past governor of Coeburn Moose Lodge and served on the Wise County Recreation Board as vice-chairman before having to retire due to his health. He was a member of Coeburn Alumni Association and was active in Coeburn civic affairs. He was also a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Edwards Gray; and his parents, James Preston and Elizabeth Latisha Williams Gray. Johnson BRISTOL, Va. – Mr. Earl F. Johnson died Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mr. Johnson was a retired lieutenant colonel of the Army reserve and a battalion commander having served overseas during World War II. He was a past member of the Housing and Urban Development Board and a past Scoutmaster. Mr. Johnson founded Johnson and Pendry Construction Co. Inc., in 1946 serving as its president. He was a member of The Community Church at Bristol, where he was very active in church activities. Mr. Johnson was very energetic and loved children. He was a graduate of Appalachian State University and attended VMI. Survivors include his wife, Anne Nottingham Johnson; and two sons: Dick Johnson and wife, Robin, of Culpeper, Va.; and Curtis Johnson and wife, Missy, of Bristol Virginia. Also surviving are many siblings; and two granddaughters, Kathryn and Kristin. Miss McConnell, of the Green Spring Community, was a retired school teacher, having taught in Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee and, most recently, in the Kingsport system. She was educated at Virginia Intermont, Radford University and Columbia University. She had talents in art, music and writing. She enjoyed nature and was an avid gardener. A benefactor of social programs, she helped out those around her and provided homes for the needy. A life long member of the Green Spring Presbyterian Church, she played the piano for churches and schools where she taught. She taught Sunday School and Bible School. She was devoted to the care of her mother during her mother’s long illness. Preceding her in death were her parents, Guy and Mary Thomas McConnell; and her brothers, Fred A. Sr. and Marvin H. Beauford Lee Musick Sr. GAINESVILLE, Va. – Mr. Beauford Lee Musick Sr. age 67, passed away Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, in a Manassas, Virginia hospital. Born July 23, 1936, in Russell County, Va., he was a son of the late Burton S. and Sarah Gilbert Musick. He had lived in the Gainesville area for over 40 years, moving there from Russell County. He retired with 20 years of service at Fruit Growers Express in Alexandria, Va., and with 13 years of service with Weems Elementary School in Manassas. He was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Dora Ellen Hiner; one brother-in-law, Wendell Hibbitts; and two infant brothers. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, June Conner Musick of the home; one son, Beauford Lee Musick Jr. and his wife, Carmen of Linden, Va.; one granddaughter, Aliyah Musick of Linden; one grandson, Dustin Lee Musick of Chesapeake, Va.; two sisters: Christine Hibbitts of Manassas; and Geraldine Hibbitts and her husband, Kenneth of Culpeper, Va.; and two brothers: Thurman Musick and his friend, Ester Stamper; and Robert Musick and his wife, Dana, all of Cleveland, Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Cecil Musick officiating. Interment will follow in the Ketron Memorial Gardens at Lebanon. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Mountain Home, Tenn. He was a retired veteran of the U.S. Army, was actively engaged in the Korean conflict and the Vietnam War and was a former police officer with the Town of Pound Police Department. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Alice and Bill Surrett; three brothers, Gene Surrett, Kenneth Surrett and Paul Surrett. Surviving are three daughters: Rachel Surrett of Atglen, Pa.; Leah Arnsberger of Parkesburg, Pa.; and Annetta Smale of Gap, Pa.; two sons: Darrell Surrett of Paradise, Pa.; and Willis R. Surrett Jr. and daughter-in-law Elaine of Osaka, Va.; three brothers: Gerald Surrett of Belair, Md.; James Surrett of Maynardville, Tenn.; and Bobby Surrett of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; eight grandchildren; a granddaughter-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews; and a few special friends.
