Atkins SAN ANTONIO – Douglas R. Atkins, age 69, passed away on Wednesday, December 10, 2003. He retired as a first sergeant from the Army after 20 years of service. He then worked for the San Antonio River Authority until his retirement in 1989. He is survived by his wife, Angela Atkins of San Antonio; daughters, Blynda Atkins of Austin, Judy Snouffer and husband Chuck and Diane Taylor and husband Fred, all of Boerne, and Sandra Zettler and husband, Nick of Arvada, Colo.; sister, Bettie Pickle of New York; aunt, Etta Glover; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mavis Cleo Bandy CEDAR BLUFF - Mrs. Mavis Cleo Bandy, age 65, passed away Wednesday, December 10, 2003, in a Bristol Tennessee hospital following a long illness. Born in Sandy Ridge, Va., she was the daughter of the late Walter Deward and Hester Rae Johnson Brooks. She had lived most of her life in the Cedar Bluff area and was an exceptional wife and mother who had a great love for her family and friends. She was a wonderful cook and gave to numerous charities and organizations. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Homer Lee Brooks and Ovie Brown Brooks. She is survived by her husband, Carl Bandy; two daughters, Regina Bandy Meadows and Audrey Bandy Godbey, both of Cedar Bluff, one sister, Agnes Stevenson of Bristol Virginia; one brother, McKinley Brooks of Richlands; four stepdaughters, Oweda Childress, Phyllis Bandy, Rai Stevens and Brenda Baldwin, all of Richmond; two step- sons, Gene Bandy and Charles Bandy, both of Richmond; and several grandchildren and step-grandchildren also survive. Madolin Cooke Boggs NORTON – Madolin Cooke Boggs, 71, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003, in Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital. She was a member of the Freedom of Worship Church in which she was instrumental in naming. She sang gospel music for over 60 years at local churches and benefits. She was a Kentucky Colonel. She was the daughter of the late Jessie James and Margaret Sturgill Cooke. He fought a hard battle with malignant melanoma since May 2003. Randall attended Virginia High School and lived all his life in Bristol Virginia. He worked for Kern’s Bakery for 20 years and was employed by Tennessee Investment Casting Company on Blountville Highway at the time of his death. He loved to fish and was a devoted Dallas Cowboy’s fan. Randall was a member of the True Faith Tabernacle and Upper Room Pentecostal Church. His pastor, Rick Morrell, was a devoted friend. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Elmer and Margaret Stout, Bristol Virginia. Mrs. Lawson was a native of Sullivan County and had lived most of her life in this area. She was a daughter of the late Isaac and Lula Fitzgerald Oliver. Mrs. Lawson was a homemaker and a member of the Home Demonstration Club. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a faithful member of the Austin Springs United Methodist Church, serving as a choir member and in the United Methodist Women for many years. She is preceded in death by her husband, Newman H. Lawson in 1970; two sisters; and four brothers. Survivors include several nieces and nephews. Osborne Sr. GLADE SPRING – Mr. Danny Everett Osborne Sr., 56, died Wednesday, December 10, 2003, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Mountain Home, Tenn. A native and life long resident of Washington County, Danny served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He did two tours of duty in Vietnam, receiving the Purple Heart and many other distinguished medals. He was retired from the Washington County School Board and was of the Baptist faith. Joe Edward Pinter CEDAR BLUFF – Joe Edward Pinter, age 73, of Dry Fork Road, died Wednesday, December 10, 2003, at Tazewell Community Hospital. He was a lifelong resident of the Dry Fork area and Canebrake, W.Va., and a member of the Lake Witten Worship Center Church of God. Mr. Pinter was a disabled coal miner and a member of the U.M.W.A. District 17, Local 6025. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Steven Pinter, Johnny Pinter, Vince Pinter Jr., and Irvin Franklin Pinter; and two sisters, Theresa Pinter Baker and Elizabeth Pinter Hudson. He was born in Lebanon, a son of the late Ernest C. and Nora Burns Whittaker, and lived most of his life in Bristol. He worked in Oak Ridge for three years during World War II and was president of Central Warehouse Corporation, a subsidiary of the Hassinger Company, where he had been affiliated since 1940. He was a life long, active member of State Street United Methodist Church, where he served on several boards and committees. He had been a member of the Rotary Club of Bristol since 1948 and was a past president of the club and a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. He had been a member of the Board of Directors of Bristol Memorial Hospital. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Ruth Nall Whittaker; four daughters, Cindy Haskins and her husband, Tom, of Kingsport, Sandra Shumaker and her husband, Dick, of Johnson City, Judy Proctor and her husband, Wes, of Greensboro and Debbie McRackan and her husband, Bob, of Raleigh; three sisters, Isabel Evola of Flushing, N.Y, Marianna Gilmore of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and Nora Rockett of Bristol Tennessee; two brothers, E.
