Anderson BRISTOL, Tenn. – Dr. Jack O. Anderson, 82, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at his home. He was born in Snover, Mich., to the late Seymour and Laura Fox Anderson. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II and received his B.S. degree from Central Michigan University, his M.A. degree from the University of Michigan and his Ed.D. from Michigan State University. He taught in the public schools of Michigan and at several colleges before moving to Bristol in 1969 as president of Bristol College. He served as chairman of the board of the college from 1983 until 1988. Dr. Anderson was a member of several educational organizations and was an active member of First Baptist Church and the Bristol Chamber of Commerce, both of which he served in several capacities. He was a long-time member of the Rotary Club of Bristol and was a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Harriett Anderson of Lansing, Mich.; several nieces and nephews; and close friends, Jason Cosby of Columbia, S.C., and Jerry W. Hicks of England. Mary Ann Barnes BRISTOL, Tenn. – Mary Ann Barnes, 65, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at her residence. She was born in Richmond, the daughter of George H. Gose and Mary Van Buren Gose. She moved here in 1941 and was a graduate of Tennessee High School. She received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Virginia Intermont College. She was a retired registered nurse and was an avid antiques collector and dealer. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Bristol Virginia. Survivors include her husband, Lee Barnes of Bristol; four daughters: Karen Alsup and her husband, Loyne, of Rockwood, Tenn.; Valerie Sexton of Kingsport; Michelle Arnold and her husband, Mike, of Bristol; and Teresa Church of Church Hill, Tenn.; two sons: Roger Redmond and his fiancé, Stephanie, of Birmingham, Ala.; and Kevin Redmond and his wife, Tammy, of Bristol; two stepsons: Charles Barnes and his wife, Michelle, of Johnson City; and Lee Barnes II of Johnson City; one brother, Bob Gose and his wife, Sheila, of Blountville; 13 grandchildren; and one niece, Kristan Oliver. Bell BRISTOL, Tenn. – Rev. Herman Wilson Bell, age 84, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Lillington, N.C., and son of the late Hugh and Coley Maynor Bell. He was a retired Church of God of Prophecy minister serving over 45 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Retha Bell; and a granddaughter, Vanessa K. Bell. Donaldson Donald Kabler Donaldson, 75, died Dec. 15, 2003, at Wexford House, Kingsport. Mr. Donaldson was born in Bristol Tennessee, on July 7, 1928. He graduated from Tennessee High School and attended East Tennessee State University, University of Tennessee and Mercer University. He worked for Southern Railway for 10 years and retired in 1991 from the Traffic Department of Eastman Chemical Company after 28 years of service. Mabel Gayhart MAXIE, Va. – Mabel Hardin Lockhart Gayhart, 87 years of age, passed away Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, suffering from pulmonary disease. Born in Argo, Ky., Nov. 28, 1916, she was the eldest daughter of the late Butler Hardin and Maggie Allen Hardin. She was a member of the Harman Freewill Baptist Church, and enjoyed cooking for family and friends; she always made sure no one left her home hungry. She collected cookbooks, loved working with her flowers and was a loving mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her first husband, who was killed in a mining accident in 1939, William Phillip Lockhart; her second husband in 1973, Ashland Gayhart; two daughters, Shirley Ann Gayhart and Linda Kay Gayhart; one son, Terry Lee Gayhart; one stepson, Charles Gayhart; two brothers, Leonard Hardin and Thomas Hardin; one son-in-law, Jack Chaillet; one grandchild, Patrick Sean McElrath. The family of Mabel Hardin Lockhart Gayhart is being served by Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home of Grundy. Alice R. Gordon BRISTOL, Va. – Alice Irene Roberts Gordon, age 66, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2003. She was a lifelong resident of Bristol Virginia, and was the daughter of Irene W. Roberts and the late Bradley Roberts and the granddaughter of the late Judge and Mrs. Floyd Roberts and the late Irene L. and Lawrence S. Wood of Roanoke. Mrs. Gordon was a 1955 graduate of Virginia High School and a 1959 graduate of the College of William and Mary, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. She later was instrumental in organizing a local Kappa Alpha Theta Alumnae Club in Bristol. She taught at Virginia High School in 1959 and 1960. After becoming a court reporter, she worked in the Virginia Court System for 33 years, where she became very interested in service to the youth of the community. She was a founding board member of Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Bristol Youth Services Board. She served on the Bristol Memorial Hospital Scholarship Board, the Speech and Hearing Center Board and the Emergency Foster Care Board. She and her husband served as foster parents to a number of children. Alice was recognized for her service to the Virginia Emergency Foster Care by Virginia Gov. Charles Robb. A very active member of Central Presbyterian Church, Alice was a Sunday School teacher, youth advisor, choir member and deacon. In addition to these activities, she was an active member in the Border Guild/Junior League, serving as president for two years. She was involved in Vaten School of Crafts, was president of the Blue Stocking Club, president of Virginia High PTA, past member of the Board of Directors for Girls, Inc. and the Sullins Academy, and also spearheaded a breast self-awareness campaign in the community. Her dedication to volunteerism won her a nomination for Tribute to Women and the Sue Shawl Outstanding Volunteer Sustainer Award. Survivors include her husband, Richard B. Gordon; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan Gordon Henry and Jeffery A. Henry of Spring Hill, Tenn.; a son, Richard B. Gordon Jr. of Asheville, N.C.; her mother, Irene Wood Roberts of Bristol Virginia; a brother and sister-in-law, B. Lee Roberts and Karen E. Roy Light BRISTOL, Va. – Roy Light, 91, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at his home. He was born in Johnson City to the late William and Blanch Sproles Light and lived in Kingsport before moving to Bristol in 1950. He was preceded in death by his wife, Katie Kestner Light. In 1940, Mr. Light purchased The Old Stone Mill, which was built in 1765 in Abingdon and established Light Milling Company there. He grew the business to one of the largest Purina dealerships in the nation. He pioneered the local feed business by having the first bulk feed facility in Southwest Virginia. Mr. Light was featured in, and appeared on the cover of, Feed and Grain Magazine, being recognized as an entrepreneurial leader in the industry. His most recent endeavor was the expansion and development of property at I-81 Exit 14 in Abingdon, containing a "new standard for the industry" facility. He was an active member of State Street United Methodist Church, which he had served as chairman of the administrative board and treasurer. He is survived by his son, R.L. Light and his wife Marcy of Abingdon; three grandchildren, Erica Guenther, Karen Tench and Adam Light; and four great- grandsons, Ian Tench, Christopher Guenther, Eliott Tench and Ben Guenther.
