Clarke SALTVILLE – Steven "Steve" Edward Clarke, 37, passed away suddenly Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003, at his home. He was a 1984 graduate of R.B. Worthy (Northwood) High School. He attended school in Chilhowie, grades seven through tenth, and achieved the junior band award. He also played football three years and was a member of the Chilhowie Wrestling Team. Steve was a member of the National Guard Reserves, Gate City. He traveled to Germany and France one summer. His Armed Service basic training was at Fort Jackson, S.C. He was an employee of Henderson and Frye Construction, Saltville. He was a devoted son, husband and father. Survivors include his parents, Rev. Bob E. and Flo Clarke, Chilhowie; wife, Marianne "Jackie" Clarke, Saltville; one son, Wesley Clarke, Chilhowie; two daughters, Danielle Boone and Carrie Boone, both of the home, also many relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the Williams Funeral Home Chapel, Chilhowie, with Rev. David T. St Clair and Rev. Janet Richardson officiating. Burial will be in the Emory & Henry Holston Conference Cemetery. Friends will serve as pallbearers. Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to the donor’s favorite charity. French Coleman POUNDING MILL, Va. – Mr. French Coleman, age 88, formerly of Prater, Va., died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003, in a Tazewell Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born in Buchanan County, Va., he was a son of the late Stuart and Sarah Ellen Cannady Coleman, both Buchanan County natives. He had made his home in the Prater area most of his life before moving to Pounding Mill, was a retired miner and a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 7170 of Haysi. He was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Maggie Desorda and Lillie May Owens, two brothers, David Coleman and Berkley Coleman, and two grandchildren, Leslie Ann Coleman and Jennifer Lynn Coleman. Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. Ermaline Boyd and husband Denny of Davenport, Va., Mrs. Ada Sue Stacy and husband Johnny of Pounding Mill, Mrs. Roma Jean Deel and husband Willard of Gans, Okla., and Mrs. Effie Viers and husband Brice of Prater, Va.; two sons, Mr. Kenneth D. Coleman and wife Mitzi of Prater and Mr. Lester W. Coleman and wife Barbara of Ferron, Utah; one sister, Mrs. Rose Jones and husband Sam of Hamilton, N.C.; four brothers, Mr. Lawrence Coleman of Woodville, Ohio, Mr. Bill Coleman of Floyd, Va., Mr. Dayton Coleman of Prater and Mr. Trinkle Coleman of Fincastle, Va.; 11 grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. Born on Jan. 20, 1923, in Marion, he was the son of the late John K. Fisher Sr. and Josephine Gillespie Fisher. He was a graduate of Marion High School and was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army, received his B.S. degree in mathematics from Emory & Henry College in 1955 and taught in the math and science departments at Marion Senior High School for 20 years. He was also part owner and operator of Fisher’s Jewelers. Mr. Fisher was one of the founders of the Marion Gospel Chapel, was a lifetime member of Gideon’s International and a member of the VFW Post 4667. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Edith Blessing Fisher in 1971, his second wife, Loretta Moore Fisher in 2000, a brother, Graham Gillespie Fisher, and a nephew, John Richard Litton Sr. Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Clarence L. (Kate) Litton of Forest, Va., formerly of Marion; a special sister-in-law and caregiver, Lee Etta Moore Buchanan of Marion; one nephew, Graham G. He was an area farmer and U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II and having served his nation in the 191st. Field Artillery Battalion-Battery C. He was an equipment operator with Virginia Department of Highways before retiring in 1991 after 17 years of service. O Dell Jasper Potter BRISTOL, Tenn. – O Dell Jasper Potter, age 81, of 1100 Pennsylvania Ave., went home to be with the Lord on Dec. 16, 2003, at his home. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl Potter, and was the son of the late Roby and Sarah Potter of Bristol Tennessee. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Danferd Lane, and a brother, Roby (R.D.) Potter. Mr. Potter was a life- long resident of the Bristol area and was a retired employee of Modern Builders of 38 years. He was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include sisters, Lucille Perry and husband Richard of Bristol Tennessee and Venus Watson and husband Louis Watson of Abingdon; special nephew, Edward Collins, and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Luther Dale Robinson PLACENTIA, Calif. – Mr. Luther Dale Robinson, age 58, of 5191 Cedar Lawn Drive, formerly of Whitewood, Va., died Monday, Dec. 15,, 2003, at a Morristown, N.J., hospital following a brief illness. He was born in Richlands and was a son of the late Luther Ellis and Evelyn Dorton Robinson, both Buchanan County natives. He was a 1964 graduate of Whitewood High School and a graduate of Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tenn. He had made his home in the California area most of his life, was a computer analyst and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Earnest L. Robinson. Weaver Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Gerald Lee Triplett CLINTWOOD – Gerald Lee Triplett died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003. He was 71 years of age. Mr. Triplett was a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University and Pennsylvania State University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a life-long resident of Dickenson County. Mr. Triplett spent a 36-year career as an educator in Dickenson County. Beginning as a guidance counselor and teacher at Ervinton High School and retiring as superintendent of schools for Dickenson County in 1994. He was a former chairman of deacons at Clintwood Baptist Church, and served on various committees throughout southwest Virginia, including the Appalachian Agency for Senior Citizens for which he had served as chairman of the board. He loved to fish, but more than anything, he loved his grandchildren and his fellow men. His wife of 46 years, Lorraine; one daughter, Jennifer Bragg of Kingsport; one son, Kevin of Abingdon, and three grandchildren, Kayla, Lucas and Sarah Grace, survive him. Funeral services for Gerald Lee Triplett will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday from the Clintwood Baptist Church, with Rev. Allen Bonnell officiating.
