She was a graduate of Radford University and taught school at Quantico Marine Base, Blacksburg, Washington County and Roanoke County. She was a member of the Bonsack Baptist Church, where she was a member of the AGATE Class and Women on Missions. She was a member of the Woman’s Countryside Golf Association and Dogwood Ladies Bowling League. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walton and Stella Smith, sister, Anna Jean Anderson, and brother, Dr. Roy R. Smith. Surviving are her husband, Herbert Conal Breeding; son, Roy Steven Breeding of Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Laura Jean and Jimmy McMann of Columbia, N.C.; grandson, John Conal McMann; brothers, Lowell Smith and wife Jackie of Cleveland, Va., and Jack D. He was a native of Johnson County, Tenn., son of the late Harm and Blanche Watson Brooks. He was a retired court director for the State of Virginia, serving in the 28th District. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Clark Brooks; daughter, Robin Brooks Schoenhardt of Bristol Tennessee; son, Stephen C. Alyne Finley Carroll Alyne Finley Carroll, 91, a former Bristol resident, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, in Potomac, Md. She was born in Marshall County, Ala., and spent her late childhood years in Kingsport and Bristol. She was a 1930 graduate of Bristol Tennessee High School and attended Peabody College, Nashville. "Lyn" moved to Washington, D.C., in 1932 during the Depression. She secured employment at the Treasury Department through the office of Alabama Senator Bankhead. She became an administrative assistant to Treasury Commissioners Bell, Bartel and Collins. Following a career in Treasury, she and two friends opened a small gift and tack shop in what was then a rural crossing in Potomac in 1953. That endeavor grew into a successful small business and Potomac institution that Lyn actively managed until the day before her death. She nurtured her business emphasizing service and satisfying demand. July, 2003, marked her 50th year as a small business owner of the "Survey" and she was recognized by the Governor of Maryland. Lyn and William Carroll were married in Dec., 1944. The couple shared a life- long love for horses and fox hunting that shaped their business interests and private time.While her husband was a master of the Potomac Hunt, she served in many other club positions. Their life in equine activities paralleled the growth of Potomac as the ultimate spot for horse and hunting activities in the Washington suburban area. First Lady Barbara Bush recognized Lyn with an award for 40 years of volunteer service to the Washington Heart Association in Feb., 1990. She was honored for her many years of work with horses and recreation in March, 2000, when the Maryland Horse Council and the Maryland Four-H Foundation honored her as a "2000 Horsewoman of the Year." She was a member of the DAR. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Elizabeth Gaines Finley, formerly of Bristol and Johnson City. Her late husband, William E. Carroll, was a longtime Potomac realtor. Survivors include nieces, Gaines Finley Hurdle, Bethesda, and Lyn Morgan Phillips, Potomac; nephews, Carroll D. Broyles, Atlanta, Christopher L. Broyles, Atlanta, LTC (Retired) Thomas Finley III, St. Louis, Mo., James P. Danny Lee Childress KINGSPORT – Mr. Danny Lee Childress, 63, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003, at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport. A native of Washington County, Va., Mr. Childress was the son of the late Hurley and Carrie Davenport Childress. He was the owner of C and H Rentals in Kingsport. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Childress, and a son, Jeffrey Childress, both of Bristol Tennessee; sisters-in-law, Shirley Wagner, Glade Spring, and Helen Smith, Meadowview; a brother-in-law, Tommy Smith, Meadowview, and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Mark Cochran CEDAR BLUFF – Mr. Mark Cochran, age 47, of the Baptist Valley section, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003, in a Salem Veterans hospital following a long illness. Born in Richlands, he was the son of the late Violet Faye Rasnake Cochran and Mr. Barney Robert Cochran of Cedar Bluff. He was a self-employed industrial battery service technician and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam era. Henry Randolph Cooper NORTON – Henry Randolph Finest Cooper, 100, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003, at Norton Community Hospital. Born to the late Luke and Mary Cooper in Tuscaloosa, Ala., he was raised from the age of 12 by his uncle, James Loving, following his parents’ deaths. He was a retired coal miner and foreman with Bethlehem Steel in Jenkins, Ky. Married to the late Mae Francis Turner Cooper, he adopted and raised five children and also took care of many other children in his neighborhood. He gave his life to Christ at an early age and became a deacon in his church. He remained an active deacon of the Chestnut Grove Baptist Church in Norton until his death. He has touched many lives in his lifetime. His family loved him and so did God. He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Ora D. Henderson, Mary Green and John, Rapidan, Va., Rosa Lee Price and Mancey, Norton, and Lora Washington, Orange, Va., and sons and daughter-in-law, Henry D. Cooper and Pam of Norton and Joe Lewis Cooper and Pat, Columbia, Md. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Toni Keys, Norton. He was a very special, loving, caring husband, father, grandfather and friend to all who knew him. He will be greatly missed. Evelyn June Grant ABINGDON – Evelyn June Grant, age 77, of the Bethel Community, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, in Johnston Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Born on June 6, 1926, she was the loving daughter of the late Frank Grant and Lettie Maiden Grant. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Lacy Marshall Grant. She was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church and attended Temple Baptist Church in Abingdon. She is survived by two sisters, Edith Whittaker of Abingdon and Vivian Parker and husband Fred of Abingdon; a brother, Frank Grant and wife Pauline of Bristol Virginia; nieces, Eula Grant (her caregiver), Louise Dye, Shirley Rhoten, Mary Schunke, Betty Gayle Parker, Martha Ann McGee, Kathy and Tish; nephews, Bob Grant, John Grant, Bill Grant, Jim Grant, Tim, Grant, Freddie Parker, Frankie Gene Whittaker and Rick Whittaker; two special great-nephews who helped take care of her, Thomas and David Waugh, and several other great-nieces and great- nephews as well as several great-great-nephews. He was a native of Washington County, Va., and had lived all of his life in Bristol. He was the son of the late William and Maude Widner Holt. He was an area farmer and U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II and having served his nation in the 191st. Field Artillery Battalion- Battery C. He was an equipment operator with Virginia Department of Highways before retiring in 1991 after 17 years of service. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Nathaniel. He had lived most of his life in the Bristol area, was a truck driver with Beechan Laboratory and a member of the Bethel View Baptist Church. Mr. Marrs was a veteran serving with the U.S. Army, where he received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Marrs was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Pauline Marrs. Necessary GLADE SPRING – Mrs. Virginia Alice Martin Necessary, age 92, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. She was a native of Tannersville, Va., and had lived in Washington County over 30 years. Mrs. Necessary attended Meadowview United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Necessary, a son, Bob Necessary, a daughter, Dolores Necessary, her parents, six brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her grandchildren, Tom Necessary of Abingdon, Jeff Necessary of Surfside Beach, S.C., and Kim Necessary Worley of Roswell, Ga.; her great- grandchildren, Lance, Connor and Brooke Worley of Roswell and Hayley Necessary of Abingdon; two sisters, Betty Lezzer of Berkley Springs, W.Va., and Jane Martin of Lynchburg, Va., and several beloved sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and nieces and nephews. Neitch MARION – Charles Wayne Neitch, age 80, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003, in the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. Born on May 9, 1923, he was the son of the late Charles Frederick Neitch and Louvicie "Vicie" Freeman Neitch and was a veteran of the Korean conflict, having served in the U.S. Army. He was retired with 25 years of service from the nursing department of the Spring Grove Hospital in Catonsville, Md., and returned to the Adwolfe area near his childhood home. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 31 of Marion, Royal Arch Chapter 54, Lynn Commandery 9, a member of York Rites, 32nd degree Scottish rites, Order of the Eastern Star 72 of Marion and the Kazim Temple of Roanoke. Charlie fulfilled his retirement by becoming a well-known Beagle hunting dog enthusiast and breeder, even accomplishing a hunting Beagle champion. He was a member of the Saltville Beagle Club, the South Fork Baptist Church and also worked part time at Seaver-Brown Funeral Service, where he met many wonderful people. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, James Carl Neitch, Frederick Raymond Neitch and Victor Clarence Neitch, and three sisters, Leona Bell Neitch, Rosalie Neitch Franklin and Ruth Catherine Neitch McCoy. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Eva Price Neitch of Marion; one sister-in- law, Minta R. Neitch of Marion; four nieces, Helen Baumgarner Meek, Betty McCoy Upchurch, Phyllis Neitch Griffith and Nancy Neitch Smith; three nephews, Howard Eugene McCoy, the Rev. David Neitch and Charles R. Everette Trivette BRISTOL, Tenn. – Everette Glen Trivette, age 85, passed away Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Ashe County, N.C., to Grover and Bina Campbell Trivette, but lived most of his life in the Bristol area. He was an engineer for Bristol Virginia Utilities and he was a certified surveyor. He was an U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and he was a retired major. He was a member of the Virginia Avenue Baptist Church and was the widower of Doris Denton Trivette. He was preceded in death by his son, John Eric Trivette. He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Rita Trivette and Geoff and Terry Trivette; sister, Grace Boyd; sisters-in-law, Grayce Denton and Margaret Denton, and grandchildren, Andrew Trivette, Robb Trivette, Tim Trivette, JonMarc Trivette and Erin Darcy.
