Mr. Clisso, 70, died Friday morning, Dec. 26, 2003, at his home. Margaret Coffman BLOUNTVILLE – Margaret H. "Nannie" Massey Coffman, age 88, passed away at 8:45 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at the residence of a son, Wayne Coffman, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Sullivan County, Tenn., on July 31, 1915, a daughter of the late George Washington and Ida Elizabeth Cross Massey, she had resided in this area all of her life. Mrs. Coffman was a homemaker and a member of the Wheeler United Methodist Church. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and "candy mamaw," who loved sewing and cooking for others. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as working in her flowers and her "big" vegetable garden. She spent more time outdoors than indoors, farming, watching birds and wildlife. She will be missed by everyone who knew her. Mrs. Coffman was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Zhinga Scott Coffman in 1964, a son in law, Carl Millsap, three brothers, Meredith Massey, Carl Massey and Clarence Massey, and by a number of half brothers and half sisters. Willard Isom MORRISTOWN, Tenn. – Willard Breedlove Isom passed away Dec. 26, 2003, at the Bristol Nursing Home in Bristol Virginia. Willard Breedlove Isom was born on Sept. 9, 1910, in Elizabethton. She was one of three children and the only daughter of the late Arthur A. and Mary Deck Breedlove. Willard was a devoted and faithful servant of Lee Street Baptist Church in Bristol Virginia, where she served many years as a leader in the Women’s Missionary Society, sanctuary choir and Lee Baptist Usher Board. In the Bristol community, she participated in the NAACP and the YWCA. She will join her family who have celebrated their journey: brothers, Burnell and Henry Kenneth, sister-in-law, Donnie Breedlove, and beloved cousin/brother, Kenneth G. Jones. She leaves to mourn her passing, Burnell Jr., Wayne and Betty Breedlove, Middletown, Ohio, Norma and Burnette Will of Topeka, Kan., and Edna and Tom Simmons of Morristown; 12 great-nieces and great-nephews; 19 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; play-daughter, Gladys Houston, and dear friend and neighbor, Mary Redman. Robert Johnson Robert Russell "Rusty" Johnson, age 47, passed away on Dec. 23, 2003, at a local Charlottesville hospital. He is survived by his parents, Robert Glen Johnson and Bettie McCall Johnson of Abingdon; a son, Robert Russell Johnson Jr., and a daughter, Lauren Elizabeth Johnson, both of Charlottesville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Danny Johnson and Sandy of Damascus, Jeff Johnson and Kim of Rocky Mount, Va., and Joe Johnson and Deborah of Saltville; one sister, Sally Johnson of Abingdon, and sister-in-law, Neva Johnson of Damascus. He had numerous nieces and nephews and a very special friend, Lisa Kidd, of Troy, Va. He was preceded in death by both paternal and maternal grandparents and a brother, Michael. Rusty attended Virginia Highlands Community College. He was vice-president of Worrell Investment Company. He served on several Boards of Trustees, including East Rivanna Fire Department and Worrell Investment Company. He was farm manager of Worrell Land and Cattle Company and was instrumental in establishing the Worrell herd as one of the premier Limousin herds in the country. He loved farming and relished all aspects of that life. He had a special affinity for all animals. He was also a natural equestrian and was happiest on a horse, whether it was playing polo with Farmington Hunt Club, trail riding or team penning with his special cowboy friends. He was an avid hunter and reveled in the outdoors. He never met a stranger and lived life to its fullest. He leaves a multitude of friends, both in Charlottesville and in his hometown of Abingdon. A memorial service for his Charlottesville family and friends will be at 2 p.m. at Hill and Wood Funeral Home on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004. Mary Leonard Mary Spurlock Leonard, 82, died Dec. 26, 2003, in Macon, Ga. She was born in Kentucky and moved to Bristol during her teenage years. She was a daughter of the late Harry D. Spurlock and Bessie McCracken Spurlock, and the widow of Woody Leonard. Mary was a member of Meadowview Presbyterian Church and an active member of the Walnut Hill Alpha-Omega Senior Citizens Group. In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by a son, Donnie Leonard, a sister, Frances Sorrell, and a brother, Harry Spurlock. Pippin, age 75, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Born on April 16, 1928, in Washington County, he was a son of the late Druie Pippin and Lilly Boardwine Pippin. He was a life-long resident of the Greendale community. Mr. Pippin was a U.S. Army veteran. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman and dearly loved his dogs, Rusty and Brownie. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sarah Pippin; an aunt, Blanche Pippin of Bristol Virginia; several nieces and nephews and dear friends. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, in the Farris Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Roger Hearl and Rev. Paul White officiating. Interment will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park. Casket bearers will be Ernest Davenport, Michael Davenport, Mark Hagy, John Luttrell, Herbie Rutherford and Greg Sykes. She was formerly of Vansant and was preceded in death by her parents, Dewey and Ida Thomas Deel, and four brothers. Nelle Starnes PINEY FLATS – Nelle Elizabeth Wolfe Starnes, 86, Colonial Hill Retirement Center, Johnson City, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, in the Johnson City Medical Center. She was a native of Piney Flats, where she had lived the majority of her life. Mrs. Starnes was a daughter of the late Samuel Robert Wolfe Sr. and Bess Wexler Wolfe, and was preceded in death by her husband, Creed N. Starnes in 1982, and her brother, Samuel R. Wolfe Jr. She received her B.S. degree from East Tennessee State University and her master’s degree from Columbia University. Mrs. Starnes had also completed additional graduate studies. A popular teacher, she taught for 38 years at Mary Hughes High School and at Sullivan East High School. Mrs. Starnes was a member and past president of both the Sullivan County Education Association and Delta Kappa Gamma. She had participated in various professional and civic organizations through the years, including the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Eastern Star. Mrs. Starnes was a member of Piney Flats United Methodist Church, where she had taught Sunday School and served in various capacities. Survivors include one son, John N. Starnes and his wife Patsy Houston Starnes, Vinton, Va.; one sister, Hildred Wexler Wolfe, Johnson City; three granddaughters, Shannan L. Starnes, Nashville, Betsy S. Louis, Richmond, and Jennifer S. Scrugham, Knoxville; two great-grandchildren, Sophie Louis and Daniel Scrugham, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mrs. Starnes will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, in the Piney Flats United Methodist Church. Rev. Laura R. Rasor will officiate. Nelson Wampler NORTON – Nelson "Big Honey" Wampler, age 88, passed away Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at Norton Community Hospital. He was a life-long resident of the Powell River and Guest River area. Mr. Wampler worked 50 years in the coal mines and retired from Old Ben Coal Company. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America and attended the Freedom of Worship Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and three sisters. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Marie Carter Wampler, Norton; a daughter, Norma (Charles) Gardner, Norton; two sons, Nelson (Diane) Wampler Jr., Abingdon, and Randy Lynn (Yvonne) Wampler, Norton; seven grandchildren; five great- grandchildren and a host of other family members and friends.
