He was born in Saltville, raised in Glade Spring and lived in several areas while in the service. In 1984, he moved back to Washington County, Va. He served 11 ½ years in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. Kyle was a former employee of VDOT and attended the First Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Barbara A. Bradley; two daughters, Leslie Ann Hammer and husband, Gary R. of Meadowview and Faith Bernice Bradley of the home; his mother, Annie Bradley of Glade Spring; four brothers, David Bradley, James Bradley and William Bradley, all of Glade Spring, and Charles Bradley of Bristol Virginia; one grandson, Kylin R. Hammer, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at noon in the Farris Funeral Chapel, with Elder Gary Hammer, Elder Melvin Johnson and Elder Penny Greer officiating. Hubert Castle Hubert E. "Red" Castle, age 74, died Friday evening, Dec. 26, 2003, at his home following a lengthy illness. Born in Lee County, Stickleyville, Va., to the late Bradley John and Ethel Pearl (Ward) Castle, May 26, 1929, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. Mr. Castle was employed almost 10 years at Kingsport Press in the shipping department. "Red" was involved in home building and selling real estate with his brother W.D. "Bill" Castle. He also worked at the Moose lodge and later in Elks Club, retiring due to ill health in Oct., 1976. He had a great love for country and bluegrass music. Over his younger years, he had a band at different times playing local, with the fiddle and guitar. He was very proud to say he knew the fiddle player in Ralph Stanley’s Clinch Mountain Band, Todd Meade. Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers, James Bradley Castle, Kingsport, W.D. Castle, Church Hill, and John Alford Castle, Johnson City, two sisters, Helen Akers, Toledo, Ohio, and Dorothy Harmon, Kingsport. Surviving are his wife of 85 years, Selva N. Castle of the home; one daughter, Doris L. Born on May 18, 1931, he was the son of the late George Elmer Davis and Ernestine Hamm Davis Anderson. He was a 1949 graduate of Chilhowie High School and a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Air Force. He was employed with the Fresno Police Dept. in Fresno, Calif., with over 25 years of service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Hileman Davis, on March 4, 2003. Mrs. Farris was a native of Clinchburg, Va., but had spent most of her life in the Bristol area. She was the daughter of the late Melvin and Rosa Testerman. She was a retired employee of the Kroger Co., a member of the Kingsway Baptist Church, Bristol Virginia Chapter of the Eastern Star, a member of the WMU of Kingsway Baptist Church and a member of the Retail Clerks Union. She was preceded in death by her husband, James D. Farris. She was born in Kentucky and moved to Bristol during her teenage years. She was a daughter of the late Harry D. and Bessie McCracken Spurlock and the widow of Linol Leonard. Mary was a member of Meadowview Presbyterian Church and an active member of the Walnut Hill Alpha-Omega Senior Citizens Group. She was a spiritual, kind woman who devoted her entire life to the Lord. In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by a son, Donnie Leonard, a sister, Frances Sorrell and her husband Woody Sorrell, and a brother, Harry Spurlock. He loved his church very much, where he was involved in most all activities. He was a retired employee of the Olin Corp. with 25 years of service. He was also a volunteer for social services for many years. Mr. Perkins was born on May 9, 1914, in Grayson County, Va., to the late Mr. and Mrs. Stephen E. and Lilly Arizona Ross Perkins. He had lived the past 30 years in the Bristol area, was a machinist and was of the Protestant faith. Mr. Perkins is survived by one sister, Geraldine Golliher, and several nieces and nephews. A private graveside service will be held at Round Hill Cemetery in Marion at a later date, with the Rev. Bill Reeves officiating. Cheri Denise Phillips ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. – Cheri Denise Phillips, 40, passed from this earth on Dec. 28, 2003. Cheri was a 1981 graduate of R.B. Worthy High School, Saltville, 1985 graduate of Virginia Highlands Community College, Abingdon, 1999 graduate of Patrick Henry Community College, Martinsville, Va., and earned a B.S. degree in business management from Chowan College in Murfreesboro, N.C., in 2001. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and the 1999 winner of the PHCC Great Expectations Award. She was employed by the Southern Virginia Medical Center in Emporia, Va. Survivors are husband and best friend, Bryan; parents, John and Marlene Marshall of Saltville; sister and brother-in-law, Brenda and Keith O’Dell of Bristol Virginia; sister, Judy Marshall of Charleston, S.C., and one niece, Kelly O’Dell of Bristol Virginia. She is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Roanoke Rapids. Poore, age 78, passed away Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, in the Quillen Dishner VA Medical Center. He was a life-long resident of the Bristol area, born Sept. 19, 1925, son of the late John and Virgie Poore. He was a former employee of Grey Hosery Mill and was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during World War II. He was of the Baptist faith and was preceded in death by a loving son, John Poore. He was previously employed as a coal miner, carpenter and deputy commissioner of revenue and was of the Primitive Baptist faith. Dorothy Vernon JOHNSON CITY – Dorothy Louise Vernon, 83, Lakebridge Health Care Center, formerly of 125 Cedar Point Place, Johnson City, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Lakebridge. She was a native of Brighton, Tenn., and had lived in Johnson City since 1959. Mrs. Vernon was a daughter of Major Surry Osteen and Margaret Jones Osteen, and was preceded in death by her husband, James Earl Vernon Jr., a sister, Ardelle Simonton, and a brother, Les Osteen. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Vernon was a member of Bluff City United Methodist Church and attended Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church and Boone Trail Baptist Church.
