Surviving are six sons, Dempsey Bailey, Lancaster, Ohio, Monroe Bailey, Haysi, Jake Bailey, Blue Ridge, Va., Denver Bailey, Elkhorn City, Teddy Bailey, Haysi, and Toby Bailey, Haysi; two daughters, Betty Deel, Haysi, and Mildred Gravel, Moneta, Va.; one brother, William Ellis Owens, Haysi; three sisters, Ethel Yates, Breaks, Va., Imal Fuller, Haysi, and Maxie Hess, Kingsport; 19 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren. Dixon ABINGDON– Mr. Homer Lee Dixon, age 80, of Green Village, passed away Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Abingdon Manor. He was born on Sept. 21, 1923, in Dante, Va., to the late Earnest Dixon and Annie Branson Dixon and was also preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Brummitt. Mr. Dixon was a retired employee of the Virginia Department of Transportation, after 40 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Geneva Dixon; two sons, Billy R. He was born in Patrick County, Va., and was the son of the late Novis Homer and Nettie Thompson Lawson, both North Carolina natives. He had made his home in the Whitewood area for the past 56 years and was of the Baptist faith. He was a retired vice-president, mechanic and truck boss for Clifton and McDonald Coal Company. He was a member of UMWA Local 1594. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gaynell Cole Lawson; one daughter, Tonya Leigh Lawson; two sisters, Freda Stowe and Hester Fain; two brothers, Erb and Nash Lawson; and one infant brother. Charles Edward Patrick Charles Edward Patrick, age 79, formerly of Bristol Virginia, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at the Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol Tennessee. Mr. Patrick was born May 9, 1924, to Albert and Ora Mae Patrick. He had lived most of his life in Washington, D.C. Mr. Patrick retired from Baxter Corporation in 1989 and moved to Solomon Island to enjoy his love of fishing and the ocean. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in five major battles, including the battle of Normandy with Gen. George S. Patton, of which he was a decorated veteran. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 34 four years, Mrs. Frances Alvey Patrick. Survivors include: brother, Earl F. Mr. Shannon was born June 5, 1959, a son of Charles H. and Marion McCullough Shannon, who survive in Jacksonville, Fla. Also surviving are his wife, Susan Robertson Shannon at home; two daughters, Rachel Nichole and Allison Danielle Shannon at home; one brother, Charle E. Shannon of Jacksonville; and one sister, Jean Nichols of Jacksonville. Mr. Shannon was senior account executive with Norfolk Southern in Salem and was a member of the West Salem Baptist Church, where he served as Sunday School teacher for the Koinonia Class. He also served with the Air National Guard, attaining the rank of first lieutenant. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem, in charge of arrangements. Virginia Dare Spencer HONAKER– Mrs. Virginia Dare Spencer, age 103, passed away Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, in a Lebanon hospital. Born Sept. 13, 1900, in Buchanan County, Va., she was a daughter of the late N.F. and Elizabeth Dye Coleman. She was a lifelong resident of the area and attended Valley View Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Ed Spencer; and one daughter, Ethel Fields. Survivors include one daughter, Lola Johnson of Ohio; one son, Hadvor Coleman of Honaker; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Ancil Childress and Rev. Claude Rose officiating.
