Mr. Boyette was a retired iron worker of Local Union 201. He attended the Cinco Baptist Church of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. He was a very feisty 91-year-old and will be greatly missed by his son, Wynton, and his daughter-in-law, Barbara. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Grey Jones Boyette. A native of Wise County, Va., she was the daughter of the late James Franklin and Maggie Thompson Starnes. She survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Jim Flanary, Norton; and two sons, James Collins Jr., Detroit and Jerry Collins, Norton. Elmore, age 76, passed away peacefully at his residence Jan. 5, 2004, after a brief illness. Buford was a loving father and grandfather. Buford served in the U.S. Navy during World War II with the 3rd Special Sea Bees Battalion in Okinawa. Later he joined the U.S. Air Force and retired as a technical sergeant. In 1967, he was with the Civil Service, where he retired in April 1982 from Holston Army Ammunition Plant in Kingsport. He was a member of the VFW Post 3383, the Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion of Kingsport post and the AARP. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Cora Parrish Elmore, who passed away in November 2002; his parents, Corine and Alvin Elmore; sisters, Brunell Elmore, Catherine Johnson, Mae Coffman and Hazel Powell; one brother, Alvin Elmore Jr.; and a grandson, Stacey Lee Carnine. She was an active member of Fellowship Baptist Church and a member of the National Teachers Association. Mrs. Greenway was a reading specialist with Sullivan County Schools. She taught for 30 years, starting in September 1966 and retiring in June 1995. Beulah Musick CLEVELAND, Va. – Beulah C. Hale Musick, age 82, passed away on Jan. 5, 2004. A lifelong resident of Russell County, she was born Oct. 22, 1921, to John and Minnie Hale. As the young bride of Walter Clayton Musick, she made her home on Buffalo Mountain in the Weaver’s Creek Section of the county 64 years ago and lived there until recently when she and Clayton moved because of declining health. She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Walter Clayton Musick; one daughter, Norma M. Kiser and her husband Harry T. Kiser of Powhatan, Va.; four sons, Ellis Carlton Musick and wife Della of Blountville, Roger Daniel Musick and wife Shirley of Abingdon, Cecil Bradley Musick and wife Linda of Cleveland, Va., and Walter Virgil Musick and wife Lois of Castlewood; one sister, Pearl H. James Stevenson Surber Jr. SALTVILLE – Mr. James Stevenson "J.S." Surber Jr., age 76, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. He was a native of Smyth County, son of the late Steve and Ora Frye Surber. He was a member of the First Church of God, Saltville, VFW Post 7328 and the DAV. Mr. Surber served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Rochester. He was preceded in death by two sisters; and three brothers, Evelyn S. Blackwell, Bernice S. Poore and Sanders, Gale, and Jack Surber. Survivors: wife Tazoni Taylor Surber; daughter, Sally "Karo" Surber Thomas and husband John David Thomas of Stanley, N.C.; granddaughter, Johnida Marilyn Thomas; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. Surber will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at the First Church of God in Allisons Gap, with Rev. David Mumpower officiating. Elizabeth T. Welliver BRISTOL, Va. – Elizabeth T. "Betty" Welliver, 82, of Grand Court, Bristol Virginia, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born in Williamsport, Pa., a daughter of the late Leon and Cora Elizabeth Ingram Thompson, and was the widow of Andrew M. Welliver. She was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church. Survivors include a daughter, Andrea "Onnie" Cunningham and her husband, Larry of Bristol Virginia; a son, Dr. Gary E. Welliver and his wife Kris, of Newland, N.C.; grandchildren, Kathy Cunningham Moore and her husband Freddy, Krista Cunningham Smith and her husband, Steve, Ian Welliver, Jake Welliver, Mac Welliver and Joe Welliver; and great- grandchildren, Maggie and Levi Smith and Bailey and Logan Moore. The family will receive friends from 10:30 until 11:45 Thursday morning at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, with the funeral mass to follow at 12 o’clock noon. Rev. Timothy E. Keeney will officiate.
