She was born in Coeburn and lived her whole life in the Norton-Wise County area. She was a mother and a homemaker. She had retired from St. Mary’s Hospital, where she had worked as a nurse. She had also worked as a nurse at Norton Community Hospital and at the former Park Avenue Hospital. Mrs. Adkins was a member of the Virginia Nurses Association and was also a member of the Norton Pentecostal Church. She was a daughter of the late George and Virgie Buchanan Akers and was also preceded in death by a brother, Hershel Akers. Survivors include her husband of 49 years, John G. Adkins, Norton; a son, John C. (Miriam) Adkins, Columbia, Md.; a granddaughter, Wendy (Arron) Marsden, Raleigh, N.C.; two brothers, Donald Akers and W.B. Akers, both of Coeburn; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Calling hours are from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Carty Funeral Home, Norton-Wise. Funeral services will be conducted from the funeral home chapel on Sunday at 2 p.m., with Rev. Roger Sloce officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Memorial Gardens, Coeburn. Charles C. Anderson CLINTWOOD – Charles C. "Curt" Anderson, age 92, died at Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital, Big Stone Gap, on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004. Born in Dickenson County, Va., he was the son of Charles Bruce and Daisy Younce Anderson. His parents, a son, Larry Dean Anderson, brothers, Verlin, Sam, Arcemus, Steve and Tom, and sister, Cathelene Shaffer, preceded him in death. Mr. Anderson served as the postmaster of the Clintwood post office until his retirement in 1979. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, World War II and member of the Clintwood United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife of 71 years, Ethel R. Anderson; a son, Dale Anderson, Louisville, Ky.; daughter, Barbara Hurst, Clintwood; six grandchildren, Kevin Anderson, Leanne Miller, Laura West, Paula Bernard, Mark Hurst and Blake Hurst, and seven great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services for Charles C. Anderson will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday from the Clintwood United Methodist Church, with Rev. Bill Cahill officiating. Interment will follow in the Phipps Memorial Cemetery, Clintwood. Mr. Buchanan was a retired coal miner, member of Mount Olivet Church and Coeburn Masonic Lodge 59 A.F. & A.M. Also, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 551 Signal Air Warning Battalion, 3rd Platoon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert T. and Lillie Matilda McCarty Buchanan, brother, Clayborn Buchanan, and sisters, Medford Hall and Mary Holbrook. Survivors include his wife, Pauline Hall Buchanan; daughters and sons-in-law, Katherine and Harold Stallard, Coeburn, Deborah Ann and Daniel Quinn, Millis, Mass., and Sharon and Thomas Duty, Hansonville, Va.; sister, Ethel Cook, Coeburn; grandsons, Eric Stallard, Abingdon, Brandon Stallard, Arlington, Va., Colin Quinn and Phillip Quinn, both of Millis, and David Gordon II, Abingdon; great-grandson, Dylan Gordon, Abingdon, and several nephews and nieces. Estes Funeral Home Inc., (276) 395-2441. Edith Bruce Buck BRISTOL, Va. – Edith Bruce Buck, age 91, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born in Washington, D.C., and was the daughter of the late Charles Ellis and Lily Pollard Bruce. She was a graduate of George Washington University and was a private tutor, specializing in reading skills for primary grade children. She also worked as a research analyst for the Military Intelligence Special Branch of the War Department and for the Commerce Department in the transportation division. She was a member of the Board of Directors for Virginia Highlands Community College from March, 1972, until January, 1980, where she also delivered the commencement address to the 1979 graduating class. Mrs. Buck co-authored the book, "The Inland Waterways of France." She enjoyed home Bible study groups and listening to Christian radio and television. She was a member of Pi-Beta-Phi sorority and also a member of The Community Church at Bristol. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. Shelburne Taylor Buck, attorney, a brother, Col. Robert Bruce, and her stepfather, Col. Arthur C. Adair. Mrs. Buck is survived by two daughters, Lilli Lee Buck and Kathleen Adair Buck Swain, both of Bristol Virginia, and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Carolyn Parnell, and a special nephew, Richard Bruce. "Pete" Buhls, 81, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Suffolk, Va., and worked as a journeyman pattern maker in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard prior to joining the U.S. Naval Air Corps. He graduated from Georgia Tech University with a B.S. degree in industrial engineering. He started his career at Reynolds Metals and then worked as a consultant for Serge Birn as part of the Marshall plan, where he consulted in Europe and lectured at the Zurich Technical Institute. For 12 years, he worked with Sangamo Electric Company, where he held many positions in four locations. Mr. Buhls came to Bristol as plant manager of Monroe Calculator in 1968 and was later promoted to vice-president for Royal Typewriter/Litton Industries in Hartford, Connecticut and Great Britain. He returned to Bristol as president and chief operating officer of Electro-Mechanical/Line Power Corporation, where he served until his retirement. Mr. Buhls served on the Bristol Regional Medical Center Board of Directors for 14 years and was board chairman from 1982-84. He was a member of the Signet Bank Board, Bristol Kiwanis Club, YMCA Board of Directors and served as a SCORE volunteer. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Ellen Buhls; two sons, Peter B. Buhls of Bristol Virginia and Eric Buhls of Bristol Tennessee; daughter, Elaine Christoph and husband Neal Christoph of New Orleans, La.; a sister, Vallie Trent of Virginia Beach, Va.; four grandchildren, Peter Buhls Jr., Sarah Buhls, Karen Christoph and Rachel Christoph. Hicks ROMEO, Mich. – Clifton H. "Possum" Hicks, 81, and formerly of Bluff City, died Jan. 8, 2004, at home. Born Aug. 23, 1922, son of Oscar and Emily (Glover) LaFayette, he was raised in Bluff City. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, during World War II. After serving his country, he moved to Michigan and began working for General Motors, retiring in 1979. He married wife Marilyn (Woodward) of 41 years. Clifton had been an avid square dancer with Country Cuzzins in 1966 and moved on with a passion into National Round Dancing in 1972. Clifton and his wife Marilyn had taught dancing at the Romeo Parks & Rec. Center for the last 15 years. Born Oct. 10, 1925, in Council, she was a daughter of the late Henderson and Nora Belle Tiller Wampler. A lifelong resident of the Council area, she was a member of the Russell Fork Free Will Baptist Church and a 1945 graduate of Council High School. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Lester, four brothers and seven sisters. Survivors include one adopted daughter, Linda Epling Jackson and special friend Gary Jackson of Davenport, Va.; two grandsons, Jason Epling and his wife Lisa of Max Meadows, Va., and Caleb Epling of Davenport; two step-great-granddaughters, Tori and Kala, and several nieces and nephews also survive. Clyde Lockhart GRUNDY – Reverend Clyde Lockhart, 88 years of age, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy. Born in Buchanan County, May 14, 1915, he was the son of the late Thomas Jefferson Lockhart and Rosa B. Wolford Lockhart. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a retired coal miner, member of the UMWA and was also retired worker for Virginia Department of Transportation. Mr. Lockhart was a member of the Grundy Baptist Church, retired Southern Baptist minister, former pastor at Greenbriar Baptist Church and had served as interim and supply pastor for many area churches. He enjoyed gardening and was a loving husband, father and grandfather. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Thomas Delano Lockhart on Dec. 29, 2003, one grandson, Kenneth Lockhart, and one brother, Edgar Lockhart. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Mavis Ramey Lockhart of Grundy; one daughter, Anita Stacy of Wolford, Va.; one daughter-in-law, Patsy W. Lockhart of Amherst, Ohio; seven sisters, Reatha Looney of Grundy, Jeanette Fleming of Mouthcard, Ky., Madge Ramey and Lois Fraley, both of Big Rock, Va., Lorraine Spurlock of Holladay, Tenn., Ruby Phillips of Holly, Mich., and June Dotson of Grundy; three grandchildren, Lisa Shoureas, Nathan Stacy and Holly Stacy, and one great-granddaughter, Emily Shoureas. Mitchell FLOYD, Va. – Rosie Linda Mitchell, age 81, passed away Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Skyline Manor Nursing Home in Floyd. Born in Buchanan County, where she had made her home for over 75 years before moving with her daughter and family to Floyd, she was a daughter of the late John Harvey and Emily Mary Owens O’Quinn. She was the widow of Hassell Mitchell and attended Russell Prater Old Regular Baptist Church. Born Nov. 18, 1928, in Russell County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Charlie Ellis and Gracie True Stump Peck. She was a lifelong resident of the Russell and Buchanan County areas and was a member of the Venia Chapel Church. She served the Lord 67 years, since she was eight years old. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Perry Henry Reynolds, one son, Perry Junior Reynolds, two sisters, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Plaster and Myrtle Reynolds, and two brothers, Billy Peck and Burgess Lee "Pete" Peck. He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Vestal, whom he made his home with for many years, and Donald Vestal, a sister, Katherine Hambrick, and several half brothers and half sisters.
