Paul Adams, age 72, passed away Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Indian Path Medical Center, Kingsport. He was a native of Damascus and was the son of the late Thomas and Blanche Osborne Adams. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. Rev. Adams was a minister of the Pentecostal faith. He is survived by his wife, Marie Adams; three sons, Jim Adams of Hurricane, W.Va., Ron Adams of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Rev. Danny Adams of Lenoir, N.C.; four sisters, Ruby McKinnis of Mountain City, Tenn., Evelyn McMillian of Peach Bottom, Pa., Naomi Rodriguez of Wilmington, Del., and Audrey McConnell of Damascus; three brothers, John Adams of Newark, Del., Gene Adams of Federalsburg, Md., and Ronnie Adams of Baltimore; three aunts, Ester Buchanan of Abingdon, Kate Buchanan of Savage, Md., and Gay Morrison of Meadowview; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Sadie Fleming Ball CASTLEWOOD – Sadie Fleming Ball, 91, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center, Shelby, N.C. She was born in Dickenson County, Va., daughter of the late Emory and Susanne Sykes Fleming. She resided at Carolina Care Center in Cherryville, N.C., and was formerly of Route 1, Castlewood. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Nelson Ball Sr. She was a member of Hamlin Baptist Church for 70 years and owned and operated Ball Grocery for over 50 years. She is survived by two sons, R.N. Ball Jr. of Titusville, Fla., and James M. Ball of Vale, N.C., and two grandchildren, James Michael Ball of Lincolnton, N.C., and Michele Baur of Jacksonville, Fla. Leland Bentley BRISTOL, Tenn. – Leland "Lee" Bentley, age 63, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Michigan and had lived in Bristol since 1993. He was the son of Ardis Bentley and the late Bartley Bentley. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was retired from Detroit Diesel. He was a Mason and a Shriner with the Jericho Temple. He was a member of, and served as trustee for, Steele Creek Missionary Baptist Church. In addition to his mother, Ardis Bentley of Bristol Tennessee, Mr. Bentley is survived by four daughters, Chere Millard of Daytona Beach, Fla., Latecia Benjamin of Flint, Mich., Malea Bunzeluk and husband Jim of Commerce, Mich., and Susan Bentley of Bristol Tennessee; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; former wife of 30 years, Carol Bentley Baker, and two special friends, Steve Benjamin and Marie Doss. Bolling WISE – Lawrence J. "Larry" Bolling, age 80, passed away Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at the Norton Community Hospital, Norton. He was born at Flat Gap, Va., and lived most of his life in Wise County, Va. Mr. Bolling had worked in the coal industry as a heavy equipment operator and had also been in the lumber business. He was a World War II Air Force veteran and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Pound, Post 9600. He was of the Baptist faith. He was a son of the late Creed and Pearlie Bolling, and was also preceded in death by a son, Donnie Joe Bolling, and four brothers, Forister Bolling, Ted Bolling, Roy Bolling and Elmer Bolling. Moore BRISTOL, Tenn. – Gene Lewis Moore, age 78, 2637 Broad St., died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Bristol and son of the late Lewis and Hassie Combs Moore. He was a member of the Church of Christ and attended Virginia Avenue Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Servicemen’s Sunday School class and former member of the sanctuary choir. He was a graduate of Tennessee High School, received his B.S. degree from M.T.S.U. and his M.A. Degree from Vanderbilt. He was a 30-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, a veteran of World War II, active in the invasion of Normandy, served two tours of duty in Vietnam and retired on the U.S.S. Constitution. His military accomplishments include Navy European Ribbon, Good Conduct Metal, Expeditionary Metal, American Campaign Metal, World War II Victory Metal, National Defense Metal, Vietnam Service Metal, Sea Service Ribbon, and Republic of Vietnam Presidential Unit Citation. He received state honors as an accomplished band director. Survivors include his wife, Thelma Phipps Moore; sons, Stephen C. Moore, Louisville, Ky., and Christopher A. Moore, Virginia Beach, Va.; daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Robert Knepper, Cuyahogee Falls, Ohio, and Anna Marie and James Knowlton, Virginia Beach, and stepsons, Kenneth Phipps and his wife Sandra, Bristol Tennessee, and Terry Phipps, Bristol Tennessee. Thelma Moore Rice SEVEN MILE FORD, Va. – Thelma Moore Rice, 92, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Summerfield Suites Hospice in Summerfield, Fla. She was a lifelong member of the Seven Mile Ford United Methodist Church and a former Sunday School and elementary school teacher. She was born Jan. 16, 1911, in Seven Mile Ford to the late Wyndham and Maude Moore and was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Porter Shannon Rice. A great-granddaughter, Nicole May, also preceded her in death. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Debbie Rice of Baltimore; one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Ralph Nichols of Belleview, Fla.; three granddaughters, Penny McGowan, Paige Schubert and Patrice May; five great-grandchildren, Meagan McGowan, Dale McGowan, Austin Schubert, Katelyn May and Shannon May; two sisters, Gay Moore of Belleview and Sibyl Moore of Seven Mile Ford; a former daughter-in-law, Betty Rice, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at the Bradley Funeral Chapel in Chilhowie, with the Rev. David St. Clair officiating. Interment will follow at the Middle Fork Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral chapel. Rogers, age 75, of 6th Street Ext., passed away Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Bristol Tennessee to the late James Carl and Mamie Shivley Rogers and he lived all of his life in the Bristol area. He was the owner and operator of E.L. Rogers Grocery Store for many years. He was a lifelong member of South Bristol United Methodist Church, where he was a past Sunday School teacher and Sunday School superintendant. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth Pridemore Rogers. Also surviving: son, Gary W. Rogers and wife Brenda; granddaughters, Allyson Rogers and Jessica Rogers; sisters, Anna Lee O’Neal and husband Don of Bristol Tennessee, Shirley Drury of Fairfield, Ohio, Joyce Skalley and husband Jack of Middletown, Ohio, and Wilma Mainous and husband Steve of Fairfield, and several nieces and nephews. Frances Vine BRISTOL, Va. – Frances Louise Martin Vine, 76, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Wellmont Hospice House. A daughter of the late Chester Arthur Martin and Mary Pearl Widner Martin, she was born in Chilhowie. She was a retired employee of Norpak Security Printers and was a member of Chilhowie Christian Church. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Vine was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow W. Vine, and her brothers, John Martin and Charles Martin. Survivors include her two sons, Dennis Vine and his wife Charlotte of Spring, Texas, and Mark Vine of Bristol Virginia; a sister, Yvonne Haga of Chilhowie; two grandchildren, Martin Vine and Whitney Vine, both of Spring; several nieces and nephews, including Tim Haga of Chilhowie, Jane Shulty of Richmond and Charlee Beth Dungan of Chilhowie, and a sister-in-law, Georgia Martin of Chilhowie. Thelsie Wolford GRUNDY – Thelsie McClanahan Wolford, 86 years of age, of Route 1, passed away Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Pikeville Methodist Hospital, Pikeville, Ky., following a short illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late William Alexander and Victoria Justus McClanahan. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of the Church of Christ. She was a graduate of Grundy High School Class of 1944, attended Radford College and taught school in Buchanan County from 1945-1950. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and a homemaker. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family and the oldest surviving descendent of the Dorsey W. and Louise Ratliff McClanahan generation. Mrs. Wolford was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Burl Wolford, July 21, 1987. She is survived by one son, Junior Jay and wife Helen L. Wolford, Maxie, Va. Also, she is survived by four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one grandson, Kelly Wolford, three sisters and four brothers. Yates, age 41, of Route 2, passed away Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of James C. Yates of Haysi and Shirley J. Monroe of Fredricksburg, Va. He attended the Old Regular Baptist Church and was a self-employed auto mechanic. Mr. Yates was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Willie and Zona Yates, and his maternal grandparents, Tom and Mary Ratliff. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Patricia Lynn Pack and husband Ricky of Fredricksburg; a niece, April Pack, and a nephew, Rickie Pack, both of Fredricksburg. The funeral service will be held Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Little David Church, with Elders Frank Newsome and David O’quinn officiating.
