John was born in Kingsport but lived most of his life in the Indian Springs and Blountville area. John served with the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Blountville Christian Church, where he served on the Board of Deacons and was a Sunday School teacher. He was retired from the AFG Corp. He was a member of the Masonic Holston Lodge 559 and served twice as Worthy Patron. He was a member of the Eastern Star Border City Lodge 162 of Bristol Tennessee. John enjoyed music, songwriting, poems and bowling. John is survived by his wife of 52 years, Verdena Cunningham of Blountville; his sister, Ruth Bowery of Kingsport; sister-in-law, Hazel Cunningham of Kingsport, and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Edwards, age 92, of Route 4, Hiltons, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at his residence after an extended illness. Mr. Edwards was born in Dickenson County, Va., and lived in this area since 1951. After college, he taught school in Dickenson County. He also worked in the mines for 17 years. Mr. Edwards came to this area to work at Holston Defense and retired from there in 1976. He was a charter member and deacon of Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church, Abingdon. He was a charter member of Hiltons Ruritan Club for several years. Mr. Edwards loved to garden and he also loved fishing and hunting. Mr. Edwards was preceded in death by his wife, Nannie Rasnick Edwards, June 2003, having been married for over 68 years, an infant son, his parents, Patton Edwards and Mollie Grizzel Edwards, and four sisters, Sallie Grizzel, Vivian Smith, Sena Smith and Emma Smith. She was born Aug. 26, 1907, in Cherokee, W.Va., to the late James Boyd and Lottie Cecil. She had lived in Harman, Va., before moving to Abingdon. She was of the Church of God faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Elswick, brothers, Henry Cecil, Charlie Cecil, Woodrow Cecil and Herbert Cecil, and sisters, Alva Taylor, Gracie Shrewsbury, Sadie Lane, Cosby Gillespie, Bessie McKinney and Helen Viers. He was born in Lebanon to the late John Ross and Bertha Rose Fogleman, and was a native of Hansonville, Va., before moving to Bristol in 1951. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va. He was the son of the late William Oscar and Martha Lloyd Gregory. Wiley was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving in Korea, and had worked at the Vance Supply Company for over 30 years and worked at the Big M Farm Supply until his health prevented him from working. He was a member of the Meadowview United Methodist Church and preceded in death by a son, William (Bill) Gregory. Wiley loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 49 years, Peggy Keesee Gregory; a son, of whom he was very proud, Charles Allen Gregory of Meadowview; a brother, Danny R. Grindstaff MOUNTAIN CITY, Tenn. – Kyman A. Grindstaff, age 79, passed away Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Bristol Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. He was a native of Johnson County, Tenn., and was the son of the late Judge E. Herman and Myrtle Greer Grindstaff. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Hubbard Maddox Grindstaff. He was a graduate of Johnson County High School, Mountain City. He attended Milligan College, graduated from Tennessee Tech. University, in Cookeville, Tenn., and received his master’s degree from the University of Montevallo, Montevallo, Ala. Mr. Grindstaff was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was stationed at U.S. Naval Training Center, San Diego, where he played football. He taught and coached in Clearwater High School, South Sumter High School and Wildwood High School, all in Florida. Mr. Grindstaff retired from Wildwood High School. He was a member of Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He was a member of the Valley View Methodist Church, Mountain City. He is survived by one stepson, Warren Maddox of Bushnell, Fla.; one brother, G. Paschal Grindstaff of Damascus; two sisters, Voreata G. Lewis of Bristol Tennessee and Nadean G. Blevins of Johnson City; one nephew, C. Douglas Lewis of Greer, S.C., and one niece, Chouree’ Blevins Counts of Johnson City. Ollie Louise Hyatt PINEY FLATS – Ollie Louise Hyatt, age 84, of 405 Tank Hill Road, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, in the Johnson City Medical Center. She was a native of Madison County, N.C., but had lived most of her life in Piney Flats. She was a daughter of the late Welsey and Geneva McDevitt Brackins. Mrs. Hyatt was a homemaker. She was a member of Piney Flats United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex Hyatt, in 1994. She was employed at the Sullivan County Courthouse Personal Property Assessor’s office. Viola Mae Mann was a very active member of First Christian Church in Bristol Virginia, where she had taught children’s church. She was a giving and courageous person who was a wonderful wife, daughter and sister. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Harlis Ramey GRUNDY – Harlis Ramey, 88 years of age, of the Weller Yard Section of Route 1, passed away Friday, Jan. 8, 2004, at this home following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Wyatt and Lucy Stiltner Ramey. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of Harman Freewill Baptist Church, a retired employee of Harman Mining Company, a member of United Mine Workers of America Local 7025 and a member of Senior Citizens of Maxie, Va. He liked to garden and take care of his flowers and loved to attend church. Mr. Ramey was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Ramey Ramey, July 11, 1995. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Izear (Ocie) Stiltner, Grundy, and Mrs. Bart (Mae) Belcher, Grundy; three brothers, Ervin and wife Nancy Ramey, Grundy, Bill and wife Betty Ramey, Bristol Virginia, and James and wife Bonnie Ramey, LaFontaine, Ind., and special niece, Juanita Webb, Grundy. Thelma Moore Rice SEVEN MILE FORD, Va. – Thelma Moore Rice, 92, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Summerfield Suites Hospice in Summerfield, Fla. She was a lifelong member of the Seven Mile Ford United Methodist Church and a former Sunday School and elementary school teacher. She was born Jan. 16, 1911, in Seven Mile Ford to the late Wyndham and Maude Moore and was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Porter Shannon Rice. A great-granddaughter, Nicole May, also preceded her in death. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Debbie Rice of Baltimore; one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Ralph Nichols of Belleview, Fla.; three granddaughters, Penny McGowan, Paige Schubert and Patrice May; five great-grandchildren, Meagan McGowan, Dale McGowan, Austin Schubert, Katelyn May and Shannon May; two sisters, Gay Moore of Belleview and Sibyl Moore of Seven Mile Ford; a former daughter-in-law, Betty Rice, and several nieces and nephews. Virginia Watkins LEBANON – Virginia Louise Sanders Watkins, a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, a loyal friend and true Southern lady was born on May 7, 1920, and died at her home, Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at the age of 83. She was the daughter of the late Graham White and Minnie Harper Sanders of Saltville, and the widow of Dr. John C. Watkins. Mrs. Watkins received her nursing credentials from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Bluefield, W.Va., in 1942. She served as a nurse in hospitals in Bluefield, Grundy, Richlands, Lebanon General Hospital and the Russell County Medical Center. Between 1965 and 1982, she was a school nurse at Givens and Lebanon Elementary Schools. Dr. and Mrs. Watkins were married on Feb. 11, 1946, and began their married life at the Maple Grove Hotel. They later moved to an apartment on Main Street and then to the family home on Banner Street in September, 1949. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Watkins was preceded in death by a son, John E. Watkins, a sister, Vaudie Ferguson, and a daughter, Sandy Kaufman. Surviving her in death are a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Bert West of Austin, Texas; son-in-law, James Kaufman of Greenwich, Conn.; step-grandson, John West of Houston, Texas; several cousins; two aunts and two nephews-in-law. Mrs. Watkins was a member of the Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church for over 55 years. Welch, age 76, 400 Peachtree St., went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Bulls Gap, Tenn., he was the son of the late Joseph Alfred and Katherine Smith Welch. Mr. Welch was a veteran of the Army Air Force and a graduate of Carson-Newman College. He was a charter member of Clark Street Baptist Church and owner of Trinity Manufacturing Company. In addition to his parents, Mr. Welch was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Joseph, and James Welch, and a sister, Mary England. Survivors include his wife, Imogene Barker Welch, of whom he was very proud of their loving 55 year marriage; five children and their spouses, to whom he was a devoted father, Emma Welch of the home, Sue Starbuck (husband Earl) of Bristol Tennessee, Martha Wade (husband Nunley) of Unicoi, Janice Calilung (Bo) of High Point, N.C., and Stanton B.
