Johnie Barton HONAKER – Mr. Johnie Barton, age 93, of the Finney section, passed away Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at his home. Born Sept. 16, 1910, in Buchanan County, Va., he was a son of the late Charlie Barton Jr. and Causby Jane Cook Barton. He had resided in Buchanan and Russell Counties his entire life and was a retired coal miner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cynthia Hess Barton, one son, Roland Barton, one daughter, Juanita Barton Young, four stepsons, Jesse Lilly, Frank Lilly, Frashier Lilly and Jerdon Lilly, two grandsons, David Junior Barton and Thomas Jackson Testerman, three sisters and 13 brothers. Survivors include two daughters, Hazel Jane Testerman of the home and Louise Testerman of Washington County, Va.; five sons, Eugene (Ruby) Barton of Amelia, Va., Rev. Leola Saul Bishop DAMASCUS – Leola Saul Bishop, age 92, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Bristol Nursing Home, Bristol Virginia. She was a born in Washington County, Va., Nov. 30, 1911, to the late James and Amy Saul. She graduated from Radford University and taught school in Alvarado and at Damascus Elementary. She was a loving mother, grandmother and homemaker. Mrs. Bishop was a member of the Damascus United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School, worked in missionary society and made sure the church was full of flowers she grew in her yard. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Emory Giles Bishop, and a sister, Virginia Sullivan. She is survived by one son, James A. Bishop and his wife Barbara of Damascus; one daughter, Amy Barker of Norton; five grandsons, Andy Bishop, Mike Bishop, Emory Bishop, Emory Barker and John Barker; 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, their children and special cousins. The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at the Garrett Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Jane Ayers officiating. Cecile Davenport BRISTOL, Va. – Cecile V. Leftwich Davenport, age 84, of 131 Seward Ave., passed away Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at her home. Mrs. Davenport was born June 25, 1919, in Norton, a daughter of the late Blaire and Eliza Clayman Leftwitch. She had made her home in the Bristol area most of her life, was a retired employee of Bristol Products and a former employee of the Big Jack Manufacturing Co. She was of the Baptist faith. Hagan Delph MAXIE, Va. – Hagan Delph, 83 years of age, passed away Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Buchanan General Hospital following a short illness. Born at Keokee, Va., he was a son of the late Greene and Sarah Oxford Delph. He had been a resident of Buchanan County several years and a member of Harman Memorial Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon. He was a retired employee of Harman Mining Company for 33 years and was a member of United Mine Workers of America Local Union 7025, where he served on the burial committee. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Eller, age 67, of 1624 6th St., went to be with the Lord Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Bristol Nursing Home. Mr. Eller was born Sept. 15, 1936, in Shady Valley, Tenn., a son of the late Robert and Lethia Watson Eller, and had made his home in the Bristol area most of his life, where he was owner and operator of Normans Barber Shop for over 40 years. He was a member of the Elizabethton Church of Christ. Wiley Gregory MEADOWVIEW – Mr. George Wiley Gregory, age 73, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at the Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va. He was the son of the late William Oscar and Martha Lloyd Gregory. Wiley was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving in Korea, and had worked at the Vance Supply Company for over 30 years, working his way up from a position in the lumber yard to manager, and worked at the Big M Farm Supply until his health prevented him from working. He was a member of the Meadowview United Methodist Church and preceded in death by a son, William (Bill) Gregory. Wiley loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 49 years, Peggy Keesee Gregory; a son, of whom he was very proud, Charles Allen Gregory of Meadowview; a brother, Danny R. He was born in Smyth County to the late Isaac Stanley and Ora Gay Robinson Gullion and was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Shortt Gullion. He was a member of the Falling Water Baptist Church and had retired from ARA Vending Company. Keen LEBANON – Mr. Harless Woodrow Wilson Keen, age 78, passed away Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, in James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, in Mountain Home, Tenn. Born May 5, 1925, in Grundy, he was a son of the late John and Seattie Stiltner Keen. He had spent most of his life in the area and attended the Church of God of Prophecy. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II in Normandy and receiving a Purple Heart. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, William H. Keen and Wiley Keen. Survivors include one daughter, Jerline Hendrix, with whom he made his home in Lebanon; four sons, Jerry Keen of Nashville, Larry Keen of Billings, Mont., Dewey Keen of Coeburn and Roger Keen of Honaker; his wife, Virginia Keen of Honaker; one sister, Elizabeth Boyd of Riverview, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren also survive. Pauline Loggins BRISTOL, Va. – Mrs. Pauline Sluder Loggins, age 86, formerly of 94 Lee Garden, went to be with the Lord Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at the Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mrs Loggins was a native of Johnson County, Tenn., but had spent most of her life in the Bristol area and was the daughter of the late Dewey and Lelar Sluder. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of the Fellowship Chapel. She was preceded in death by one son, Ancel Loggins, one sister, Ivealean Gray, and her stepmother, Mrs. Ruby Sluder. She was born in Winchester, Va., graduated from Holston High School and lived in Damascus before moving to Greenville, S.C. James Rogers BRISTOL, Tenn. – James "Hugh" Rogers, age 78, of 1537 Bristol Caverns Hwy., passed away Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at the Cambridge House. Hugh was born May 22, 1925, in Jacobs Creek, Tenn., and had made his home in the Bristol area all of his life. He was a retired driver for Smith Transfer of Staunton, Va., and a member of the Teamsters Union 549. Ralph Whicker Reverend Ralph Ashley Whicker, 82, went home to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, from NHC of Johnson City. He was born on July 14, 1921, in Parkersburg, Ill., a son of the late Stephen and Laura Whicker, and was also preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Mary Elizabeth Jennings Whicker, a sister, Marie, and brothers, Charles, Stephen, Lawrence and Lindel. Reverend Whicker served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, was graduated from Austin Peay State College with a bachelor of science degree and attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. As an ordained Southern Baptist minister, he pastored churches in Tennessee, Kentucky, Wyoming, Ohio and Connecticut, often serving as contractor to build the church buildings in addition to serving as pastor. He was a gifted and talented builder, singer and preacher. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Bristol Tennessee after moving to Bristol from Nortonville, Ky. Remaining family members are Mary Ruth Trunnell and her husband Tony of Bristol Virginia; grandson, Ashley Trunnell and his wife Tami; great- grandchildren, Alexander and Rachael Trunnell of Owatonna, Minn.; son, David Ashley Whicker and his wife Sandy, and grandsons, Aaron and Nathan Whicker of Flagstaff, Ariz., and grandson, Andrew Whicker and his wife Angie of Hawaii; son, John Paul Whicker and wife Debbie of Maysville, Ky., and grandsons, Samuel and Jacob Whicker and their mother, Teresa Larkins of Lebanon, Tenn. son, Mark Anthony Whicker and his wife Joy and grandsons, Jason Whicker and wife Crystal and Josh Whicker of London, Ky.; one brother, Floyd Whicker and wife Bert of Evansville, Ind.; along with many nieces and nephews and a very special and devoted friend, Virginia Leonard of Bristol Tennessee. Ethel D. Yarber MARION – Ethel D. Yarber, age 86, went to be with the Lord Saturday Jan. 10, 2004, in Francis Marion Manor. She was born in Watauga County, N.C., on Oct. 11, 1917, to the late Roby and Lilly Whitaker Cornett, and was preceded in death by her husband, Lonny Yarber, one son, Bennett Yarbourgh, infant twins, Odell and Lou dell Yarber, sister, Ollie Cornett, and brothers, Burley, Barney and Andy Cornett. Ethel accepted Jesus as her Savior at a young age and was baptized at the Mountain Dale Missionary Baptist Church in Vilas, N.C. She was a longtime member of the Lowman Valley Church in Marion. She was often found singing the Lord’s praises and was a joy to all who knew her. She will be missed by all. Survivors include two daughters, Dolly and M.J.
