Baker NORTH TAZEWELL, Va. – Mr. Charles Monroe ‘Casey’ (Holcomb) Baker, age 62 , died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born in McDowell County, W.Va., and was a son of the late Rev. Frank Holcomb and Mary Magdalena Hicks Holcomb, both McDowell County natives. He had made his home in North Tazewell for the past two years, but had lived most of his life in McDowell County. He had attended the Big Creek High School at War, W.Va., and was a retired coal miner and carpenter. He was a disabled Vietnam veteran. He had served three tours in the Army during the Vietnam conflict and he had been stationed at the Berlin Wall and Okinawa. Casey was a member of the American Legion Post 175 of Bradshaw, W.Va., and the Barns-Beavers VFW Post 7136 of Tazewell, Va. He was a member of the Living Spring Pentecostal Holiness Church of North Tazewell. Survivors include: his wife, Phyllis Ann McCoy Baker; daughter, Mrs. Bret (Melinda) Blankenship of Tazewell; sons, Charles M. Baker Jr. and wife Yvonna of Tazewell and Thomas Spohr of Columbus, Ga.; sisters, Mrs. Ewing (Mary Frances) Begley of Tazewell and Mrs. Patricia Donovan of Beckley, W.Va.; brother, Robert Edward "Blue" Holcomb of Wise; half-sisters, Mrs. Anna Cooper of North Carolina, and Mrs. Ada Woody of Bartley, W.Va.; half-brother, Roger Baker of Bartley; grandson, John Patrick Casley Blankenship; eight nephews; five nieces; five great- nephews; and many friends also survive. Barrow ABINGDON – Nellie Estelle Barrow died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born April 13, 1919, in Petersburg, Va., the daughter of the late Benjamin and Nellie Robertson. Nell had been a resident of Abingdon since 1958. She was a 1948 graduate of St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing in Richmond. She was an active member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Potts Martin Sunday School Class and the Response Circle. Nell was a member of the Random Arts Club, Book Lovers Club, Johnston Memorial Auxiliary, Appalachian Trail Club and served as a volunteer for Friends of the Barter Theatre. Nell was a past volunteer of the Virginia Highlands Festival and served as both a Brownie and a Girl Scout Leader. In addition to her parents, Nellie is preceded in death by sister, Sue Robertson; brother, Roy Robertson; brother-in-law, William Barrow; and four sisters-in-law, Ellen Barrow, Ruth Robertson, Kaye Robertson and June Robertson. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Guy Joseph Barrow, M.D.: one daughter, Susan Barrow Humphreys, M.D., and husband Rick; two sons, John Daniel Barrow III and wife Nancy Heriot, and Guy Joseph Barrow Jr. and wife Dianne; grandchildren, Caroline Heriot, Brannon and Anna Epling, Jeremy Humphreys and wife Julie, Todd Humphreys, Meghan, Joseph, Hannah, and John Daniel Barrow IV; three brothers, Rev. Oma Angeline Sexton COEBURN – Oma Angeline Sexton, 92, passed away Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, in the Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital, Norton. She attended the Cranes Nest Bible Church and was of the Jehovah’s Witnesses faith. Surviving are three sons, Steward Sexton of Nickelsville, Va., and Raymond Sexton and Kanoy Sexton, both of Lexington Park, Md.; a daughter, Freda Sexton of Coeburn; four sisters, Annie Sexton of Coeburn, Edith Finch of Dungannon, Va., Melba Carter of Valley Lee, Md., and Lula Finch of Coeburn; a grandson and his wife, Steven and Cindy Sexton, who took care of Mrs. Sexton; 10 grandchildren; 14 great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel, Coeburn, with Pastor Bruce Martin officiating. Shortt, 93, passed away Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at the Johnson City Medical Center after an extended illness. Grace was a member of the Flat Gap Missionary Baptist Church for 50 years and was the proprietor of Shortt’s Grocery for 42 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy J. Shortt; and her parents, Oliver and Sarah (Hampton) Shortt. Surviving are daughters, Flaudine Adams, Bowling Green, Ky., and Sarah Mabelline Jones, Graniteville, S.C.; sons, Chester Shortt, Louisville, Ky., Edmond F. Shortt, Whitesburg, Ky., Jimmy C. Shortt, Louisville and Ronald O. Shortt, Pound; a host of friends and loved ones; 15 grandchildren; 24 great- grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
