Boughers BRISTOL, Tenn. – John Harold Boughers, age 81, 802 Beidleman Creek Road, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, in the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Johnson City. He was a native of Sullivan County, son of the late John Simon and Virginia Morton Boughers. He was a retired self-employed contractor and farmer. He was a member of Central Holston Christian Church, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of King Masonic Lodge 461, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a charter member of Jericho Shrine Temple. He was preceded in death by his wife , Juanita O’Dell Boughers; and a daughter, Paris Marie Boughers. Heck STONEGA, Va. – Lillian Richardson Heck, 89, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, after a lengthy illness. Lillian was born in Stonega on March 29, 1914, and devoted her whole life to taking care of her family members, relatives, neighbors and friends. "Lil" had lived in Virginia, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. Her last months were spent at Heritage Hall in Big Stone Gap, where she became very special to the "new wing" and "skilled-unit" staff. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Edgar "Ed" and Dianah Wells Richardson; her brothers, Augustus "Gus" Richardson, William "Willie" Richardson, Anderson Cole "Coles" Richardson and Vivian Richardson; half-brothers, Lucian Richardson and Aaron Richardson; and half-sister, Jenny Mae Richardson and husband William Heck. Kennedy Sr. LEBANON, Va. – Mr. Hollie Thomas Kennedy Sr., 87, formerly of Jolo, W.Va., died early Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at his residence. Mr. Kennedy was born April 14, 1916, in Paynesville, W.Va., a son of the late Charlie and Ella Lester Kennedy. He was a retired coal miner, a member of the UMWA and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, an infant daughter, a very special stepmother, Barbara Smith Richardson Kennedy; three brothers, Earm, John and Isaiah "Dick" Kennedy; three half brothers, Earl, Charlie Jr. and Eldridge Kennedy; two stepbrothers, Roy and Patton Richardson; one stepsister, Julia Kulchar; and one half sister, Oma Kennedy Collis, preceded him in death. Susie Mae Kennedy COEBURN – Susie Mae Johnston Kennedy, 90, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at the home of her daughter, Barbara Leonard in Norton. A native of Wise County, she lived all her life in the Banner Community. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, George W. Kennedy; her parents, Andrew and Laura Johnston; brothers, Roy, Clyde, Pearl Wesley, and I. E.; and daughter-in-law, Phyllis Kennedy. Susie was a devoted Christian and lifetime member of the Banner Assembly of God, where she was church secretary, played the piano and taught Sunday school for 60 years. Susie started a career late in life. She worked at the Banner Post Office, the St. Paul Garment factory and retired from the Wise County Treasury office as deputy clerk, collecting taxes in Coeburn. Susie was a charter member of Coeburn Chapter 153 Order of the Eastern Star for 50 years and served as Patron and held local, district and state offices for 38 years. She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge for 45 years, Homemakers Club for 23 years, the Wise County Democrat Women’s Club, a Kentucky Colonel and a charter member of the Banner Knockus Club. James Henry McCann Jr. (U.S. Army, Retired), died peacefully at his home in the presence of his family on Monday, Jan. 12, 2004. He was 93. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed. The son of James H. and Willie Harrison McCann, he was born in Prince George County, Va., on April 4, 1910. He graduated from Virginia Tech and received his commission from the U.S. Army with the Class of 1930. He was employed by the Virginia Public School System until called to active duty in the Army in 1941. Upon graduation from the Army’s Command and General Staff College in 1942, he was sent to Iceland as a battalion commander and commander of the Eastern Sector to take over the defense of that country from the British. Col. McCann was transferred to England before D-Day, and was executive officer of the 92nd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Group. He helped prepare AAA Battalions for the assault on occupied Europe. He was among the build-up troops to land on Utah Beach in France and helped set up the air defense of Omaha Beach and the port city of Cherbourg. He earned the Bronze Star and four Battle Stars while serving in the European Theater. After the war, he joined the faculty of the Air Defense School at Fort Bliss, Texas, and from 1946-1949, he was an associate professor of military science and tactics at Virginia Tech. Following duty on the staff of U.S. Second Army, he was ordered to Japan and served as battalion commander and then chief of the inspections team of the Inspector General’s Department of Central Command, Japan. He subsequently served in the United States as plans and training officer of Central Air Defense Command, and in Taiwan, the Republic of China, as air defense advisor. His last military assignment was as senior Army advisor to the Virginia National Guard. He retired from the Army in 1962 to become associate commandant of cadets at Virginia Tech, a position he held until his retirement from the university in 1976. He was active in civic affairs, serving as chair for eight years of the Montgomery County Red Cross and chair of New Dimensions, an organization of retired Virginia Tech personnel. He was a member of the Rotary Club, an elder in the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church and a member of the Blacksburg Country Club. He was also a former district governor of Ruritan National. Col. McCann is survived by his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth (Libby) Roberts McCann; his daughter, Susan M. Butler and her husband H. Scott Butler, of Newport News, Va.; his daughter, Elizabeth H. McCann and her husband Christopher S. Linsmayer, of Denver, Colo.; his grandchildren, Anne Elizabeth Butler, Christopher H. Linsmayer and Kaitlyn Elizabeth Linsmayer; and his sister, Evelyn A. Poole, of Petersburg, Va. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Gwendolyn McCann; his sister-in-law, Annette Tyler and her husband Col. Joe Tyler; his sister-in-law, Paddi Roberts; his brother-in-law, Denes Agay; nine nieces; five nephews; and their children. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Col. W. Harrison McCann, and his younger brother, Merle N. McCann.
