Gilbert, age 70, formerly of Jewell Ridge, Va., died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at his home following a brief illness. He was born in Richlands and was the son of the late Bliss and Lillie Boyd Gilbert, both Tazewell County natives. He had made his home in the Cleveland, Ohio, area most of his life and was a retired machine operator. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Shelby, N.C., and was a member of Cleveland Police Patrolmen Association. He was a U.S. Navy Korean War veteran. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Alfred and Buford Gilbert. Survivors are two daughters, Ms. Crystal Esposito of Windham and Mrs. Hope Gilbert Bradshaw and husband Robert of Windham; two sons, Fletcher Gilbert and fiancée Cassie Lewis of Cleveland and John Gilbert Jr. and fiancée Jacqueline Macko of Cleveland; one sister, Charlotte Barrett of Richlands; one brother, Gene Gilbert of Walhalla, S.C., and six grandchildren, Patricia McConville, John Gilbert III, Cassie Torres, Marcus Gilbert, Shyann Gilbert and Samatha Esposito also survive. Pauline Holmes ABINGDON – Pauline Cumbow Holmes, age 84, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at her residence. She was a native of Russell County, Va., of the Hansonville community. Mrs. Holmes lived in the Greendale community since her marriage to the late Paul J. Holmes on Aug. 14, 1947. She was the daughter of the late Raymond and Gladys Davis Cumbow. She was an active member of the Greendale United Methodist Church, serving as secretary/treasurer since 1950. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul J. Holmes, two sisters, Mrs. Gay Reece Scyphers and Mrs. Nellie Jean Bill Thompson, a brother, Donald H. Cumbow, and brothers-in-law, Reece Scyphers, James ReMine and Beecher Cumbow. She was a 1938 graduate of Lebanon High School. She attended Johnson City Business College and later worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for Burleson Store Co. in Spruce Pine, N.C., secretary of the S.E. Massengill Co., Bristol Tennessee, the alumni office of the Emory & Henry College, Emory, Va., E.W. Potts, C.P.A., Abingdon, and retired from the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services in Abingdon. Samuel Murray BRISTOL, Va. – Samuel Bradley Murray, age 57, passed away Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, in the Wellmont Hospice House. Mr. Murray was born on July 12, 1946, in Washington County, Va., to the late Mrs. Aline Bradley Murray. He was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area, where he worked in the finance business. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Vietnam War. He served on the Board of Directors with the Bristol Credit Bureau and was currently serving on the Board of Directors with TFC Lenders. Mr. Murray attended John S. Battle High School and received his associate degree from the Bristol College. He was of the Baptist faith, and a member of the King Lodge 461 and Jericho Temple. Mr. Murray is survived by his wife, Geneva Murray; two sons and two daughters- in-law, Samuel "Sam" Bradley Murray and wife Missy and Andy Murray and wife Sharon, all of Bristol Tennessee; one sister, Tommy Kathyrn Shultz of Abingdon; four brothers, Lester Murray of Bristol Tennessee, Kyle David Murray of Blountville, Bob Murray of Bristol Tennessee and Jeff Bradley of Fort Worth, Texas, and four grandchildren, Jordan, Collin, Morgan and Hannah. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late James "Bigfoot Jim" and Elizabeth Sutherland Owens and was the last surviving member of his generation. He was a retired coal miner, a member of UMWA Local 7170 and a member of the Haysi Church of Christ. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Emory Lee Owens. Jettie Viers VANSANT, Va. – Jettie Viers, age 69, of Route 1, passed away Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport. Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Henry L. and Dollie Stiltner Lane. She was a homemaker and a member of Coleman Chapel Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband, Harold Viers; a son, Tony Viers and wife Peggy of Vansant; two daughters, Karen Feury and husband Robert of Cloverdale, Va., and Tracie Viers of Vansant; one sister, Betty Lou Deel of Vansant; one brother, Tex Lane of Harmon, Va., and two grandchildren, Shaderick Viers and Brandon Feury. Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at Haysi Funeral Home, with Rev. Darrell Thacker officiating. Burial will follow in the Viers Cemetery, Rakes Ridge. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends after 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, where an evening service will be held at 6 p.m., with Rev. Terry Colley. Haysi Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Macie Wheatley WISE – Macie Belle Barnette Wheatley, age 85, passed away Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Bon Secours St, Mary’s Hospital, Norton. She was born in Scott County, Va., and lived most of her life in Wise. She was a mother and a homemaker and was a member of the Hurricane Baptist Church, Wise. She was a daughter of the late Hirim and Rosie Berry Barnette and was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter Wheatley. She was also preceded in death by an infant son and several brothers and sisters. Survivors include her son, Lee B. "Buckey" Wheatley and his wife Helen of Wise; her daughter, Patty Wheatley of Wise; her son, Wendell Wheatley and his wife Marion of Wise, and her grandchildren, Lolita (James) Minton and their son Wesley of Norton, Lee Wheatley (Belinda) and their children, Michael and Megan, of Coeburn, Melissa Simmons (Owen) and their son Austin of Chicago and Jennifer Wheatley of Charlottesville; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Calling hours are from 6-7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at Carty Funeral Home, Norton-Wise, where funeral services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. with Rev. Jerry Mullins officiating.
