Pendergrass, 94 Rocky Ray Robinson, 45, Birchleaf, Va. Betty A. Breeding JOHNSON CITY – Betty Audrey Breeding, age 80, passed away on Jan. 18, 2004, at Pine Ridge Health Care Center. She was the daughter of the late Ira D. and Ada Richardson Breeding. She had lived in the Tri-Cities for 20 years after moving here from Atlanta. She was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include sister, Virginia Range of Johnson City; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Richard, Janice and Penny Horne. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at 6 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Johnny Mink officiating. Carr, 75, of 800 Big Hollow Road, passed away Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was born in Bristol Tennessee and has been a resident of Sullivan County most of her life. She is a member of Blountville Christian Church and had been employed at Monroe Calculator and, more recently, at North Electric Co. Julia is a member of Ladies of the Woodsman of the World. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe Tolbert and Martha Tolbert Malone; and one sister, Dorothy Harper. Survivors are her husband, Vestal Carr; two daughters, Sandra (Sissy) and husband Charles Leonard, and V.V. and husband Chris Elliott, all of Blountville; two sons, Kelly (Pete) Murray of Morehead, Minn., and Brett Joe Carr and wife Brenda of Fort Riley, Kan.; four sisters, June Cross and Ruth Hilliard, both of Bristol Tennessee, Marie Feathers, Titusville, Fla., and Binia Fageol Laurie of Missouri; three brothers, Eddie Talbert and Harry Talbert of Bluff City, and Allen Talbert of Titusville; three grandsons, Jonathan Sams, Chad Leonard and Tyler Cox; one granddaughter, Laiken Cox; one great- grandson, Matthew Leonard; and several nieces and nephews. She was the daughter of the late Romey and Ardis Millard Worley. She was a former employee of Cornett Manufacturing Company. She was of the Baptist faith and a member of Christian Fellowship Church. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Icenhour and Marie Phillips; one brother, Jack Douglas Worley; her mother-in-law, Cleo Roberts Dishner; and her father-in-law, Jesse Dishner. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Hubert A. Bob served 14 years as State Representative in the Tennessee General Assembly, and eight years as County Executive of Washington County and was later elected as Washington County Commissioner, a position he had held for the past eight years. He was instrumental in obtaining the Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University having served on the Legislative committee to establish the school and was co-author and co-signor of that legislation. All his life Bob had been active in community affairs where he had served as Chairman of the Washington County March of Dimes, past-president of the Johnson City Jaycees, past-president of the Johnson City Optimist Club, and had been a member of the Washington County Republican Executive Committee. He served eight years in the Tennessee National Guard. Bob was a former deacon and an active and devoted member of Clark Street Baptist Church . Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Laura Imogene McKinney Good, of the home; one son, Robert S. “Robbie” Good; two daughters, Kathryn Denise Good Street, and son-in-law, Mike Street, and Deborah J. Hayden BRISTOL, Va. – Lucille Frances Hayden, age 82, of 21225 Lynn St., went to be with the Lord Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Hayden was born on Dec. 11, 1921, in Washington County, Va., to the late Mr. and Mrs. Floyd and Mary Ada Mitchell Arnold. She had lived all her life in the Bristol area and was retired from John S. Battle High School, where she worked in the cafeteria as a cook. She also had worked at Big Jack Manufacturing and Cornett Manufacturing. Mrs. Hayden was a charter member of the Scenic Park Baptist Church, where she was a faithful choir member, nursery worker and a Sunday School teacher. Mrs. Hayden was a very loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mrs. Hayden was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Edward Hayden. He was a native of Abingdon and the son of the late John and Mary Keys Mahaffey. Mr. Mahaffey was a veteran of the Army Air Corps during World War II, serving in Africa and Italy. He worked for the former Journal Virginian newspaper in Abingdon and for the Bristol Herald Courier for 13 years before moving to Houston. He worked for the Houston Chronicle for 21 years, and then returned to Abingdon in 1986. Mr. Mahaffey enjoyed traveling and spending days with his sons in construction projections. He was on the Abingdon Senior Citizens Board and also was a volunteer for yard work and maintenance for both the Senior Center and The Virginia Creeper Trail. Survivors include: his wife, Verna Lowe Mahaffey; two sons, John D. Mahaffey and his wife Beth, Abingdon, and Timothy Mark Mahaffey, Abingdon; his sister, Sarah Catherine Cartmell, Bristol Virginia; eight grandchildren, Erin M. She was a graduate of Greenfield High School in Meadowview. She was a retired employee of Raylass Department Store and District III Government Co-op. She was also a member of the Sunshine Club and had served as district manager of the Bristol site of District III for many years. She was a member of Tennessee Avenue Baptist Church and taught Sunday School at Baker’s Chapel Methodist Church, Abingdon Bible Church and Tennessee Avenue Baptist Church for 50 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles F. Whiteaker; an infant son; two sisters, Pearl Eggers Jones and Edith Compton; and two brothers, James G. Eggers and Russell Glenn Eggers. Survivors include her son, Charles F. Whiteaker and wife Pat of Bristol Tennessee; brother, Richard L. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of Justine Robinson and the late Collin Robinson, and was a disabled logger. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Tony and Von Robinson. Dorothy Schmidt Dorothy Faye Richardson Schmidt passed away Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at Johnson City Medical Center after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born July 25, 1934, in Emory, Va., to the late Lester and Ella Johnson. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Herman E. Richardson, five brothers, Coy, Edward, Thomas, Robert and Jerry Johnson, and one sister, Mary Stufflestreet. Dorothy was a former employee and volunteer with Bristol Regional Medical Center and a member of First Christian Church in Johnson City. She enjoyed being a member of the Bristol Chapter of the Red Hat Society. Robert Sells ABINGDON – Mr. Robert Sells, age 79, passed away at home after a long illness on Jan. 18, 2004. He was born on Oct. 14, 1924, in McDowell County, W.Va., to the late R. J. and Lucy Sells. He was a former resident of Switchback, W.Va., where he worked for Consolidated Coal Company at Ackman, W.Va. He had been a resident of Abingdon for over 50 years and retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation in 1988 with 30 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife, Edna Flinchum Sells; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Teresa Sells of Abingdon; two grandchildren, Kaselin Sells and Chandra Parris and husband Kevin; two great-grandchildren, Kerrington Parris and Greyson Parris; a brother, Hubert Sells of Abingdon; a sister, Callie Short of Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens, with Rev. Wendell Harlow officiating. Interment will follow in the cemetery. Casket bearers will be William Bott, Sammy Sells, Bobby Leonard, Shannon Weddle, Kevin Parris and Wayne Sells. Mary Ann Shutters Mary Ann Shutters, age 80, went to be with the Lord on Jan. 18, 2004, at Wellmont Hospice House. She was a member of West Hills Baptist Church. Ms. Shutters had lived in Washington County, Va., for more than 60 years and in Sullivan County for the last nine years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Shutters; a son, Douglas Shutters; and a great-grandson, Derek Cabell. Survivors include sons, Jackie Shutters and Joe Shutters, both of Bristol Virginia; daughters, Dolores Millwood and Peggy Bevins, both of Bristol Tennessee; brothers, Zach Wynegar of Holston, Va., and Scott Wynegar of Polk City, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; seven great-great- grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at 8 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Larry Hall officiating.
