Alley, 43, formerly of Fremont, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004. Dennis was born in Rural Retreat, Va., was a graduate of Sullivan Central High School and a graduate of Heidelberg College. He was formerly employed with the Davis-Bessie Nuclear Plant and most recently with the Fermi 2 Plant in Monroe, Mich. Arnold ROCKY MOUNT, Va. – Rev. Lewis C. Arnold, 83, formerly of Saltville, passed away Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, at his home. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Rev. Arnold was a retired minister of the Doe Run Christian Church (D.O.C.) and served in the ministry for a total of 33 years. He began his pastorate as a pastor of the First Christian Church, Saltville, was called as pastor of Doe Run Christian Church, Nov. 1, 1970, was ordained Nov. 4, 1973, and served until September 1979. He then served the Petunia Christian Church for 11 years and returned to Franklin County, serving as interim pastor at Doe Run Christian Church, retiring Dec. 31, 1998. Rev. Arnold was an U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II in the Infantry. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Louis G. Arnold, a brother, Eugene F. Arnold, and a three-year-old granddaughter, Shawna Arnold. He is survived his devoted wife of 64 years, Harriet; a daughter, Patricia and husband John Dailey; a son, Michael and wife Karen; a daughter, Martha and husband Chip Phillips; six grandchildren, Michael Smith, Amy Kurfuss and husband Danny, Chris and Wendi Arnold and Jennifer and Sydney Phillips; four great- grandchildren, Kayla Smith, Alyssa Kurfuss, Allyson Arnold and Jacob Arnold; sister, Mrs. Wanda Souders, Gasburg, Va.; two nieces; one nephew; four great- nieces and two great-nephews. Ruth Audrey Craft PAYNE GAP – Ruth Audrey Craft passed away Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, in the UK Medical Center in Lexington. Ruth was the daughter of the late Worley and Julia Wampler Dean. She was born May 1, 1916, being 87 years, eight months and 20 days of age at the time of her passing. Ruth was a member of the Payne Gap Freewill Baptist Church. Born on Sept. 19, 1948, in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Arthur Maiden and Ollie Mae Galliher Maiden. Mrs. Eastridge was a day care provider for 35 years and had lived in Abingdon most of her life. Her faith was the truth. She was born June 18, 1916, in Buchanan County, Va., to the late Joseph Adam and Pearl Taylor McClanahan. She had lived most of her life in Grundy, where she and her husband operated the Ferrell’s Grocery. After her retirement from her grocery business in 1989, she moved to Abingdon, where she enjoyed her love of quilting and cooking for her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Ferrell, a son, Charles D. Ferrell, three brothers, Johnny McClanahan, Earl McClanahan and Willie McClanahan, and two sisters, Abby McClanahan and Ocie Mitchell. She is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Dean Ramey and husband Robert C. Ramey of Abingdon; sons, L.C. Born on June 30, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Henry C. and Jessie Heritage Wood and the wife of the late James P. Gilmer. Mrs. Gilmer was a graduate of Sullins College, Bristol Virginia, and King College, Bristol Tennessee. She returned to college in 1974 and earned a master’s degree in guidance counseling from Radford University, Radford, Va. Mrs. Gilmer taught in public schools for 30 years and retired from education in 1979. She was an active member of the Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church and the Pink Ladies at Russell County Medical Center. Mrs. Gilmer enjoyed camping and performing volunteer work. Survivors include her son, James P. Gilmer Jr. and wife Norma, Morganton, N.C.; daughter, Joanne G. Barrett and husband Fred L., North East, Md.; sister, Jane W. Darrell Hagerman ASHTABULA, Ohio – Darrell Hagerman, age 56, formerly of Oakwood, Va., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, in the hospice unit at the Ashtabula County Medical Center. He was born Sept. 21, 1947, in Oakwood, was the son of the late Grant and Eilleen Puckett Hagerman and had lived between Ashtabula and Oakwood over the past 34 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was formerly employed with Dominio Logistics. He was a member of the Army-Navy Club and enjoyed reading and spending time with his granddaughter, Gianni, and his dog. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Melanie Sue Hagerman, in 1975. Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Hagerman of Ashtabula; his granddaughter, Gianni Hagerman; three brothers, Glenn Hagerman of Florida, and Doug and Allen Hagerman, both of Virginia, and three sisters, Faye Hagerman of Virginia and Barbara Sexton and Peggy Scott, both of North Carolina. Hubert Haven Houser BRISTOL, Tenn. – Hubert Haven Houser, age 79, of 805 Raytheon Road, went to be with the Lord Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, in the Cambridge House. Mr. Houser was born on Oct. 8, 1924, in Bristol Virginia, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Maynard B. and Sylvia Iotia Baker Houser. He had lived all his life in the Bristol area, was a retired employee of 30 years from Monroe Calculating, and was a self-taught builder. Mr. Houser was a member of the Brookside Baptist Church and the Patton-Crosswhite VFW Post 6975. Mr. Houser was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a seaman first class, receiving the following medals: Point System Medal, World War II Victory Medal, American Area Camp Medal and the Eur-African-Mid-East Area Camp Medal. Mr. Houser was a very loving husband, father and grandfather and was preceded in death by one brother, Vernon Paul Houser. Born March 12, 1931, in Pocahontas, Va., he was a son of the late Jhile Jackson and Dove Parker Robinette. He was a member of the Swords Creek Community Baptist Church. He lived in the Council area for the past 40 years and was a retired coal miner, having worked for Clinchfield Coal Company. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Jean Taylor, one half-brother, Monty Thompson, and two stepbrothers, Robert Robinette and Joey Thompson. He was a retired miner and a member of U.M.W.A. District 20. He was a minister for 53 years, pastor and founder of Open Door Tabernacle, Flat Rock Community Church and Valley Chapel Church. He had a radio ministry in Gate City, Norton and Abingdon. He was preceded in death by three brothers, M.C. Salyer, Clarence Salyer, and L.C. Salyer. Born Aug. 30, 1940, in Buchanan County, Va., he was a son of the late Dewey and Lovada Edwards Stanford. He had lived his early life in the Buchanan County area, moving to Lebanon in 1984 and then to Winchester in 2003. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He received the Silver Star, Purple Heart and several other awards. He was a member of the East Lebanon Free Will Baptist Church and a distinguished member of the VFW Post 9864 of Lebanon until 2003. He was a disabled coal miner, having worked for Jewell Smokeless Coal Company. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers.
