Hughes, 72, Abingdon Shirley Barbrow CHILHOWIE – Shirley Adams Barbrow, age 49, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Smyth County Community Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Larry W. Barbrow Sr. of Chilhowie; one daughter, Kristen Baines of Chilhowie; one son and daughter-in-law, Ronald S. and V. Elizabeth H. Baines of Atkins, Va.; one stepdaughter, Daphne Mullins and husband James of Orange, Va.; two stepsons, B.J. Barbrow and wife Tiffany of Orange and Christopher Barbrow of Chilhowie; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Thelma Owens of Chilhowie and Peggy and Bobby Steele of Lenoir, N.C.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, William P. Adams Jr. and wife Jenny of Glade Spring and Johnny Adams and wife Shirley of Bristol Tennessee; six grandchildren, Ronald Steven Baines Jr., Kanzada Rose Baines, B.J. Mullins, L.J. Mullins, Josh Mullins and Nicholas Barbrow, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 1, 2004, at 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Entombment will be Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. in Mount Rose Cemetery, Glade Spring. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Buchanan, age 94, 3247 Hickory Tree Rd., Mt. Holston community, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at her residence. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced at a later date. Anna Elizabeth Cash WYTHEVILLE – Anna Elizabeth Cash, age 96, formerly of Bristol, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at Asbury Center at Birdmont, Wytheville. Miss Cash was born in Bristol Virginia, April 19, 1907, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Lee Cash. She attended Bristol Virginia schools and was a graduate of Virginia Intermont College and Westhampton College of the University of Richmond Class of 1928. She received a master of science degree from the University of Illinois. She taught for several years in the Virginia Public School System, was the assistant librarian of the Bristol Public Library and a writer for the Bristol Herald Courier. Miss Cash was an officer in the U.S. Navy WAVES, 1942-46. She served in the Postal Affairs Department in Washington, D.C., supervising the coordination of mail to and within the movements of U.S. warships. She was assistant librarian at Montevallo College, Alabama, for several years before returning to Bristol to become librarian at Sullins College. She moved to Asbury Center at Birdmont, Wytheville, in 1998. She was a lifelong member of State Street United Methodist Church in Bristol. She is survived by niece, Courtney Cash Mustin of Richmond, and nephews, James B. Cash Jr. of Ballwin, Mo., and Francis A. "Steady" Cash Jr. of Charlotte, N.C. A graveside service will be Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at 4:30 p.m. at the Mountain View Cemetery, East Valley Drive, Bristol Virginia. Grubb Funeral Home, Wytheville, is in charge of the arrangements. Jessie Allen Dillard BRISTOL, Va. – Funeral services for Jessie Allen Dillard will be held Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at 3 p.m. at the Fellowship Chapel, with Rev. Scott Price and Rev. Lester MacKinnon officiating. Burial will follow in the Susong Cemetery. Pallbearers will be friends of the family. Mr. Fern, age 51, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at his home. John P. Hughes ABINGDON – John P. Hughes, age 72, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004. He was born in Abingdon, the son of the late James A. Hughes and Myrtle Musick Hughes. He was a graduate of William King High School and attended Emory & Henry College and Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He worked for VDOT in Northern, Eastern, and Southwestern areas of Virginia. He was a resident engineer for VDOT in Lee County and Scott County. He retired from VDOT with 35 years of service. He served with the U.S. Army in the 3rd Infantry Division during the Korean War, with the rank of sergeant first class. He was a member in the VFW Post 6975 of Bristol. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by a brother, James D. Hughes, and a sister, Alice Hughes Thompson. Surviving are two brothers, Edwin Thomas Hughes Sr. of Blountville and Tony Lynn Hughes of Abingdon; one sister, Jean Hughes Bain of Roanoke, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, in the Campbell Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Steven Pollard officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 p.m. until the time of the service Sunday. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in Knollkreg Memorial Park. Joyce O’Neal ABINGDON – Mrs. Joyce Ann Rowe O’Neal, of 408 Brookhill Drive, passed away Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at her home. She was born Jan. 7, 1933, in Besoco, W.Va., to the late William M. and Dossie G. Cole Rowe. She lived for many years in Grundy prior to moving to Abingdon in 1976 and was preceded in death by her two brothers, Mont Rowe and Robert Rowe of Toledo, Ohio. She was a member of the Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church and a founding member of the Washington County Animal Defense League. She loved to read, garden and, most of all, being with her family. She is survived her husband, Dick O’Neal, Abingdon, and two daughters, Peggy Haines and husband Greg, Melbourne, Australia, and Genie O’Neal and husband Walter Smith, Abingdon. Mrs. O’Neal has one grandson, Neal Smith, and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, from 5 until 7 p.m. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon. Entombment will be private. Margaret Robinette BRISTOL, Tenn. – Margaret Donnell Robinette died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born in Rutherford County, Tenn., and had been a resident of Sullivan County for many years. She was a retired employee of Wal-Mart with over 25 years of service. She attended Parkway Baptist Church. Margaret is survived by her husband, Harvie Clint Robinette; brother, George Donnell, and sister-in-law, Augusta Donnell, both of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; niece, Shirley Parker of Woodbury, Tenn., and several other nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2, in the Glenwood Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel, with Pastor Gary Montgomery officiating. Entombment will follow. Shirley Ray Warner LEBANON – The burial and committal service for Shirley Ray Warner will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Russell Memorial Cemetery. Those attending should meet at the funeral home by 1:30 p.m. to go in procession to the cemetery. Mrs. Warner, 65, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, in the Russell County Medical Center. Viola Plaster Whited SWORDS CREEK, Va. – A celebration of Mrs. Viola (Gracie) Plaster Whited’s Christian life will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Jess Whited, Rev. Daniel Richardson and Rev. Dennis White officiating. Interment will follow in the Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery at Richlands. Grandsons and grandsons-in-law will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Ministers Scotty Perkins, Howard Reynolds, Dennis Richardson, all area ministers and men of the church. Mrs. Whited, age 88, of the Pine Creek community, went to be with her Lord and Saviour on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, in a Richlands hospital.
