Belcher MOUTHCARD, Ky.– Posey D. Belcher, age 90, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, in Pikeville Methodist Hospital. Born Jan. 31, 1914, he was a son of the late Basil Belcher and Hulda Church Belcher, and was preceded in death by his first wife, Lessie Sloan Belcher. He was a retired coal miner and a charter member of Mouthcard Baptist Church (1948) and a deacon. Surviving are his wife, Wilma Belcher; son, Dennis Belcher, Winchester, Ky.; daughters, Janice Rowe, Grundy, Evelyn Caudill, Mt. Sterling, Ky., and Deanna Johnson, Winchester, Ky.; stepdaughter, Anna Lee Murphy, Dana, Ky.; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Bundens, 48, formerly of Bristol Tennessee, died Jan. 31, at St. Joseph Hospital, Reading, Pa., of natural causes. Born in Reading, he was the son of Jane A (nee Nein) Reber and his stepfather, Robert C. Reber, of Exeter Township, Pa. He was formerly employed by Carquest, Bristol Tennessee, as a truck driver for five years and later became employed by Landis Plumbing, Leesport, Pa., as a truck driver for five years, working until early this year. He was an Army veteran. Surviving are his son, Jeffrey S. Bundens, Bristol Virginia; and two brothers, Larry A. of Pennside, Pa., and Dennis S., of East Stroudsburg, Pa. Services will be held Thursday in Reiffton, Pa. Auman Funeral Home of Reiffton is in charge of arrangements. H. Paul Buskell CEDAR BLUFF– Mr. H. Paul Buskell, age 94, of 229 Alfalfa Lane, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at his home. He was born in Richlands and was a son of the late Albert Greene and Rose Elizabeth Fields Buskell. He was a life-long resident of the Richlands and Cedar Bluff areas and was a member of the Richlands Presbyterian Church. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Buskell began his career in sales at Marco Warner Wholesale as a young boy. His work there sparked an entrepreneurial spirit, which led him to establish Buskell Brokerage Company, selling to wholesale grocers throughout the Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee regions. After serving in the Army during World War II, he returned to Richlands, moved a mountain and built Gateway Shopping Center. Mr. Buskell established the first subdivisions in Tazewell County at Claypool Hill, Pounding Mill and Tazewell, opening the area for hundreds of homes. The first County Industrial Park property was also sold by Mr. Buskell to S&S Corporation. Helping to establish the Richlands Area Industrial Development Corp., he and others obtained a charter resulting in the Eastern Isles Clothing Factory. Mr. Buskell later moved another mountain and built the Claypool Hill Mall. He, along with Jim Lindsey, master-minded the Clinch Valley Bank. Among other accomplishments, he was a Kentucky Colonel, a charter member of the Richlands Lions Club and was presented the coveted Citizenship Award in 1982 presented by the Richlands Area Chamber of Commerce. He worked hard to better his community and the lives of his fellow citizens. From his humble beginnings, he forged a world of business that touched thousands of lives, and did it in the face of difficulties that would have deterred many. Mr. Buskell’s accomplishments were shared with his wife of 68 years, Elizabeth, who worked diligently by his side. In addition to his parents, two brothers, Roy Lake Buskell and James Kyle Buskell and son-in-law, Barry A. Bandy, preceded him in death. Survivors in addition to his wife, Elizabeth Virginia Goodwin Buskell are: two daughters, Mrs. Carole Lombard Cooke and husband, Hugh of Richlands and Mrs. Barry (Paula) Bandy of Richlands; one sister, Mrs. Bettye (Mary Elizabeth) McLaskey of Richlands; grandsons, H. Shannon Cooke and wife, Carlene of Richlands, and Jason-Paul Trevor Cooke and wife, Heather of Leesburg, Va.; granddaughter, Barri G. Dick Campbell OLYMPIA, Wash.– Dick Campbell passed away Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, at home. Dick was a long-time resident of Thurston County. Dick was born in Saltville, June 6, 1942, to Charles (Sr.) and Margaret Campbell. Dick entered the Air Force in 1966 and upon his discharge from Minot AFB, took up residence in Minot, N.D., where he began his career in civil service. He moved to Washington in 1977 and continued his career at Fort Lewis, retiring February 2003. Casey BRISTOL, Va.– Mrs. Katherine Avanell Casey, age 77, passed away Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, in a Bristol Tennessee hospital. Born March 27, 1926, in Buchanan County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Steven Thomas and Sarah Ida Whitt Street. She had lived in the Bristol area for the past year and a half, moving from the Drill section of Honaker. She was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Casey; five sisters, Creasy Blankenship, Maudie Rasnake, Gertrude Hale, Stella Compton and Virgie Street; and four brothers, Hassell Street, Carroll Street, Roy Street and Taulbert Street. Survivors include one son, Howard Leon Casey of Bristol Virginia; one sister, Cora Dye of Honaker; two foster sisters, Della Cardona of Bristol Virginia, and Ethel Dye of Richlands; two grandsons, Nathaniel Casey and Andrew Casey; three stepsons, Fayne Casey of Drill, Earl Casey of Honaker, and Jim Casey of Ohio; and four step-grandchildren also survive. Nora Smith Christian GRUNDY– Nora Smith Christian, 77 years of age, of the Slate Creek area, passed away Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, in Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late William Columbus (Lummie) and Lottie Jane Rowe Smith. She was a life-long resident of Buchanan County and was a former member of the Stacy Church of God, where she served as Sunday School teacher, treasurer and worked with the Ladies Auxiliary. She and her late husband, Basil Junior Christian, were owners and operators of the Christian Grocery Store on Slate Creek for many years. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother. Mrs. Christian was preceded in death by her husband, Basil Junior Christian, Jan. 18, 1984. Mrs. Cross was born on July 28, 1943, in Washington County, Va., to the late Mr. and Mrs. Cecil King and Elsie Mae Fenner Haworth. She had lived all her life in the Bristol area, and worked in food service. She was a member of the Cleveland Presbyterian Church, and attended the Virginia Avenue Baptist Church. Mrs. Cross was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, Kenneth W. Cross, one sister, Louise Haworth, and her nephew, Billy Haworth. Mrs. Cross is survived by: one son, Jeffrey W. Nelle Neely Jenkins SHADY VALLEY, Tenn.– Nelle Neely Jenkins, age 95, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness. She was a native of the Sutherland Community and was born June 18, 1908, to the late Isaac Andrew and Susan Ellen Hand Neely. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Taylor Jenkins, who passed away 21 years ago on this date in 1981; also by six sisters; and four brothers. She and her husband owned and operated Jenkins Grocery for 35 years on Orchard Road in Shady Valley. They where the original owners of the Jenkins Cranberry Bog and Mrs. Jenkins served as Grand Marshall for the October 2003 Cranberry Festival. She was a 50-year member of the Extension Club and very active member with the Shady Valley Senior Citizens, a charter member of the Shady Valley Presbyterian Church and loved to read and was well-known for her beautiful hanging baskets. Survivors include a daughter, Dot Scott and husband Charles, of Shady Valley; a son, Carroll Jenkins and wife Eloise, of Shady Valley; a sister, Faye Brinkley of Shady Valley; three grandchildren, Lorie Shumate and husband John of Shady Valley, Jeffrey Jenkins and wife Cindy of Jonesborough, Tenn., and Greg Jenkins and wife Tabitha of Jonesborough; two great-grandchildren, Colt Jenkins and Lenzie Jenkins; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Ginger Norris and JoAnn Porter also survive. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the Flat Rock Community Church. Mr. Williams was also preceded in death by three brothers, Wayne, Bobby and Jimmy Williams, and one sister, Georgia Lee Bacon. He was founder and president of Williams Brothers Coal and Trucking Company and a founding partner of WBJ Trucking Company. Mr. Williams attended Keystone Presbyterian Church.
