Watson, 75, Bluff City Fred Holmes Wilson, Abingdon Gladys Surber Bales ATKINS, Va. – Gladys Surber Bales, age 80, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, in the Wellington Place in Johnson City. Born in Saltville on May 10, 1923, she was the daughter of the late William and Sarah Talbert Surber and was a longtime member of the Bear Creek Atonement Lutheran Church in Atkins, where she taught Sunday School for a number years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Walter Robert Bales on May 10, 2003. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Ervin Farmer of Danville, Ky.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Ron and Judy Bales of Marion, Ed and Susan Bales of Knoxville, Dan and Nancy Bales of Woodstock, Ga., and Joe and Teresa Bales of Piney Flats; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Also surviving four sisters, Lemmie S. Hagy Debusk, Margaret S. Cisco and Emily S. Hagy, all of Saltville, and Mary S. Yarvis of Portage, Ind., and one brother, Oliver Surber of Falmouth, Maine. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 7 at 11:30 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel, with Pastor Ed Schaack officiating. Burial will follow in the Wassum Cemetery, Atkins. Ferrell Berry BRISTOL, Tenn. – Ferrell Woodrow Berry, 85, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, from the James A. Quillen Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tenn., following a lengthy illness. He was born on March 5, 1918, in Bluff City, a son of the late Stanley and Nanny Jones Berry, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of New Testament Baptist Church since 1975 and was involved in such construction projects as the T.V.A. Dam at South Holston Lake and the Sperry/Univac/Exide building. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Martha Phillips Berry; two sons, Danny Berry and his wife Debbie and Ronnie Berry and his wife Becky; three grandsons, Ron, Tim and Dustin and his mother, Nancy Berry; three sisters, Millie Webb, Elsie Webb and Elizabeth Gillespie, and several nieces and nephews. Shearin, and a grandson, Chad Davis. Mrs. Davis lived many years in Tazewell, but for the last 11 years she lived in Catawba, where she was a member of the Welcome Baptist Church. Flora Greenwell BRISTOL, Tenn. – Flora Kate Isom Greenwell, age 75, of 2601 Bay St., went to be with the Lord, Feb. 5, 2004, at the Wellmont Hospice House following a long, courageous battle with lung disease. She was born May 14, 1928, in Gate City, to the late William Martin and Elizabeth Ann McNutt Isom. She moved from Kingsport to Bristol in 1963. She was a beautician and worked at several beauty shops in Bristol. She was also co- owner, with her husband, of McKamey’s Shoe Shop for 25 years. She was a member of True Faith Tabernacle. She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, Rose Vaughn, Edna Vaughn, Willie Crawford and Emogene Light, brother, Conley Isom, and stepson, Larry Greenwell. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Glenn Greenwell. Mr. Hunt Sr., age 77, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at his residence following a short illness. East Lawn Funeral Home is serving the Johnnie Hunt Sr. family. Jerry Johnson BLOUNTVILLE – Jerry Donald Johnson, 83, died Wednesday morning, Feb. 4, 2004, at Bristol Wellmont Hospice House after an extended illness. Mr. Johnson was born in Chickasha, Okla., Dec. 2, 1920, and grew up in Milwaukee. After graduating from high school, he attended Marquette University for a short time, then joined the C.C.C.s and worked in the North Woods of Wisconsin, before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1940, where he served as a tail gunner on B-17s during the first daylight raids over Europe and later in North Africa. After 55 combat missions, he returned to the states, married, and taught gunnery at Nellis Air Force Base, Las Vegas, Nev., until his discharge in 1945. He moved to the Blountville area in 1948. He was employed by the National Weather Service (NOAA) from 1945 until his retirement in 1976, and was the meteorologist in charge of the weather station at Tri-Cities Airport for most of those years. He was a charter member of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, Kingsport, where at various times he taught Sunday School, was a member of the Vestry and served as junior warden and in other positions. He was preceded in death by his parents, Seymour Leroy Johnson and Florence (White) Johnson, a son, Tansley Alan Johnson, and six brothers and sisters of the Milwaukee area. Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Virginia (Bailey) Johnson; two daughters, Patricia J. Mazurkiewicz and husband Robert F., Blountville, and Pamela J. Offield and husband Bob D., Bristol Tennessee; one son, Timothy A. Johnson and wife Cynthia (Tucker) Johnson, Lancaster, Calif., and one brother, Seymour Leroy Johnson Jr., Waterford, Wis. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Ylana D. Mazurkiewicz and husband Joel Braby, Dallas, Stephen M. Mazurkiewicz and wife Judith (Price) Mazurkiewicz, Lynchburg, Va., and Leslie A. Lonnie Smith Logan MEADOWVIEW – On Monday afternoon, Feb. 2, 2004, the Lord called home one of His angels, Lonnie Smith Logan. She was a native of Meadowview and born on Nov. 14, 1921, to the late John and Birdie Willoughby Smith. She attended and graduated from King’s Mountain Training School, Abingdon, in May 1941. Mrs. Logan was a loving wife to Erkward Logan Sr. for more than 57 years and a devoted mother, who instilled Godly character in all children. Mrs. Logan specialized in blessing each child with a unique love, patience and guidance that would ensure they were walking according to the Will of God. Mrs. Logan was a faithful member, who loved Zion Hill A.M.E. Zion Church, Meadowview. She was always willing to serve with a servant’s heart in uplifting the name of Jesus, compassionate and a great encourager of all she came in contact with. Karen Sturgill WISE – Karen Susanne "Susie" Sturgill, 47, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2004. Susie was born in Norton, the daughter of Mary Ann "Patsy" Sturgill and William J. Sturgill of Wise, and was a lifelong resident of Wise. She was a graduate of J.J. Kelly High School, Westhampton College of the University of Richmond, studied at Haifa University in Israel and was the vice president and manager of Jefferson Mortgage Corporation in Norton. Susie was active in community programs and was a leader in the Wise County 4-H Horse and Pony Club. In addition to being a talented trumpet player herself, she particularly loved the music of Bruce Springsteen. She was an avid fan of the Washington Redskins and the University of Kentucky basketball and she was also a strong supporter of the University of Virginia’s College at Wise. Susie loved to travel and had made trips to Australia, Hong Kong and throughout Europe. Besides her parents, Susie is also survived by her paternal grandmother, Kathleen Sturgill; stepmother, Gaye Sturgill; two brothers, Jeff Sturgill and wife Kathy of Wise and David Sturgill and wife Jennifer of Johnson City; stepsister, Stephanie Frye and husband Kevin of Frankfort, Ky.; nieces, Jennifer Sturgill and Courtney Sturgill of Wise; nephews, William Sturgill of Wise and Bryan Sturgill of Johnson City, and two special friends, Elizabeth Smiddy Wills of Wise and Ann Norris Reid of Portland, Ore. Among her greatest joys were her activities and support for these beloved nieces and nephews. Mary Marie Tiller ABINGDON – Mrs. Mary Marie Owens Tiller, age 79, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, in a Bristol Tennessee hospital. Born Dec. 5, 1924, in Dickenson County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Rufus and Margaret Sutherland Owens. She had lived in Abingdon for the past 23 years, moving there from Dickenson County. She was a member of the Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church at Abingdon. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Tiller, several brothers and sisters and one grandson. In her generation, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors include five sons, Clell Tiller of Bowie, Md., Edd Tiller of Gray, Tenn., Wayne Tiller of Abingdon, Jerl Tiller of Bee, Va., and Danny Tiller of Bristol Virginia; five daughters, Vivian Tiller of Bowie, Kathy Breeding of Honaker, Pearl Harris of Haysi, Peggy Owens of Bristol Virginia and Norma Lawson of Abingdon; 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren also survive. Vanover BRISTOL, Tenn. – Estelle L. Vanover, 76, 112 Marion Ave., died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. Mrs. Vanover was a native of Sullivan County, Tenn. She was homemaker. Mrs. Vanover was a Seventh-day Adventist. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sons, Charles Edward Vanover and Kelsey Dean Vanover. Survivors include one daughter, Charlotte Hoosier, Konnarock, Va.; one son, Donnie Vanover, Bristol Virginia; eight grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren. Watson, 75, of 1832 Chinquapin Grove Road, went to be with the Lord, Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at Wellmont Hospice House, Bristol Tennessee. She was a native of Sullivan County, where she lived all of her life, and the daughter of the late David and Jennie Buchanan. She was a longtime member of Chinquapin Grove Baptist Church. Mrs. Watson was retired from Chinquapin Grove Utility District, where she worked for 27 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wiley C. Watson, four sisters, Edna Cox, Lila Jenkins, Ruby Hardin and Celia Cawood, one half sister, Virgie Glover, and five brothers, Bill, Harrison, Bass, Arlie and John Henry Buchanan. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Judy Watson, Bluff City; a daughter, Sonja K. Fred Holmes Wilson ABINGDON – Mr. Fred "Do" Holmes Wilson died on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004. He was born in Smyth County on Dec. 7, 1922. He lived most of his life in Tazewell and Russell County, Va., before moving to Abingdon in 1980. Mr. Wilson participated in five major battles in the European theater during World War II under the command of Gen. George S. Patton. He was also in three major battles in Korea, where he served with the famous 2nd Infantry Division and received the Bronze Star for meritorious service. He was retired from Clinchfield Coal Company in 1985, with 26 years of service. He served as secretary-treasurer, District 28-UMWA in the early 1970s. He was a member of the Local Union 1256, where he was an officer in most of the local union positions. He was a charter member of the Abingdon Memorial Post 1994 of the VFW. He served as quartermaster and later senior vice commander before resigning for health reasons. His special interests included fishing, baseball and supporting Lebanon High School athletic events. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Hallie P. Wilson, one sister, Mrs. Jettie W. Patton, and one brother, Hassel R. Wilson. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was an active member of the Hansonville Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee and church clerk. Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Norma Jean Wilson of the home; two sons, Freddie L. Wilson and his wife Polly, Bristol Virginia, and Henry E. Farmer and his wife Gay, Abingdon; one daughter, Tammy Renee Click, Richmond; two granddaughters, Makenzie Click, Richmond, and Summer Jean Wilson, Bristol Virginia, and special friends, Amy Gardner, Rick Fore and their two sons, John and Jackson Fore, and Hazel Caywood. The funeral service will be conducted Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at 2 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Jack Lyons and Rev. Michael Belcher officiating.
