She was a native of Tazewell, Va., but had lived in Glade Spring most of her life. She was one of 14 children born to the late Noah and Cleo Thomas Compton. She was a widow of Oliver B. Asher. Mrs. Asher was a member of Little Flock Holiness Church in Glade Spring. She is survived by six daughters, Margie Ann Manning of Shady Valley, Tenn., Rosie Lee Towers and Lillie Mae Bailey, both of Jacksonville, Fla., Peggy Ruth Dooley and Rosemary Morris, both of Clarksville, Tenn., and Marie Annette Rouse of Chilhowie; six sons, Oliver Asher of Chilhowie, Charles "Buddy" Asher of Glade Spring, Woodrow David Asher of Abingdon, Donald Lee Asher of Saltville, Victor Allen Asher of Glade Spring and Samuel Christopher Asher of Abingdon; 41 grandchildren; 70 great-grandchildren; one great-great- grandchild and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, at the Garrett Funeral Home Chapel, with her grandson, Rev. Oliver L. Asher officiating. Artie Marie Whited Boyd ABINGDON – Mrs. Artie Marie Whited Boyd, age 102, formerly of Richlands, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at her home following a lengthy illness. She was born in Swords Creek, Va., and was a daughter of the late Thomas Lee and Sallie Bostic Whited, both Russell County natives. She had made her home in Abingdon the past 17 years and was of the Methodist faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. James Luther Boyd, three sisters, Minnie Corns, Pearl Vance and Irma Horton, also, two brothers, Herbert Whited and Opal Whited. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors are one daughter, Ms. Delcie Boyd of Abingdon; one son, Mr. Dallas Boyd of Dana Point, Calif., and one granddaughter, Susan Wallach. Funeral services for Mrs. Artie Marie Whited Boyd will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, with Rev. Ralph Bostic and Rev. Carl Young officiating. Judy Frank BRISTOL, Va. – Judy Kay Thomas Frank, age 57, of 1401 New Hampshire Ave., Unit D, passed into the eternal bosom of God Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Frank was the daughter of the late Kyle and Francis Thomas. She was a native of Bristol Virginia, had spent most of her life in the Bristol area and later moved to Freehold, N.J., with her late husband Lester Frank Sr. She later returned back to Bristol Virginia and was a faithful member of the Church of Christ in Gate City. She later changed her affiliation to the Church of Christ in Bristol Virginia. She was a graduate of Virginia High School, continued her education at the Bristol Commercial College and later attended Virginia Intermont College. She was employed at Virginia Intermont College and later worked at the Department of Social Services for more than 20 years. Her health would not permit her to work this year. She received a special award from the Department of Social Services for the most working person for many years. She leaves to cherish her memory four children: two sons, Lester Frank Jr. and Dean Frank, both of Bristol Virginia; two daughters, Monica Frank and LaVonda Davis, both of Bristol Virginia; five grandchildren, Caleb Frank, Castavas Davis, Mark Frank, Shannon Frank and Katrell Laurie, and two sisters, Mrs. Mae Morris and Mrs. Frances Riddle, both of Charlotte, N.C. She also had a special niece, Felicia Thomas; three aunts, Mrs. Laura E. Gaines of Los Angeles, and Mrs. Betty E. Wolfe and Mrs. Elizabeth Simpson of Gate City, and a host of nieces and nephews and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at noon Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at the State Street Church of Christ, with Dan C. Bailey and Brother Nathaniel Johnson officiating. He was born in Smyth County and was preceded in death by his father, Lee Cole Jackson. He was employed at Smyth County Community Hospital as an operating room technician and was an avid deer hunter. Survivors include mother, Shirley Jackson, Marion; brother and sister-in-law, Dewey and Katey Jackson, Marion; sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Terry Compton, Marion; five nephews and one niece that he considered his own children, Jeff Jackson and wife Katie, Norfolk, Dewayne Jackson, Marion, Jacob Jackson, Marion, Victor Compton, Marion, Jeffrey Louthian, Marion, and Gayle Compton, Marion; many aunts, uncles and cousins and special friends at Smyth County Community Hospital. Virginia H. Kestner ABINGDON – Mrs. Virginia H. Kestner, age 79, passed away Saturday, Feb. 7, at her home. She was a retired employee with Buster Brown in Chilhowie, with many years of service. Mrs. Kestner was preceded in death by her parents, James and Rosie Harris, two daughters, Shelby Kestner and Joyce Kestner Price, and one brother, Preston Harris. She is survived by three sons, Willard Kestner and wife Nancy of Abingdon, Coy Kestner and wife Kathy of Chesterfield, Va., and Phillip Kestner of Damascus; two sisters, Mary Lou Pauley of Roanoke and Margaret Robinson of Saltville, and three brothers, Tommy Harris and Robert Harris, both of Saltville, and Glenn Harris of Chesterfield. Lyons JOHNSON CITY – June Beavers Beatrice Lyons, age 80, passed away peacefully at home on Feb. 7, 2004, after a long illness. A daughter of Giles Keller Beavers and Lillie Belle Watson, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Clifford Lyons, their only child, Jeffrey Lyons, a brother, Clyde Beavers, and sisters, Margie Vanover, Estelle Gilbert and Lexie Hale. She is survived by a sister, Gladys Farmer; daughter-in-law, Pearl Lyons of Knoxville, and grandchildren, Mark and Silvia Lyons of St. Louis, Mo., David and Jennifer Lyons of Lusby, Md., Becky and Robert Dills of Knoxville, Marie and Kevin Joiner of Memphis and Laura Lyons of Big Stone Gap. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren, Jeff, Kenneth, Elizabeth, Celeste, Jessica, Katelyn and Jacob, a brother-in-law, Robert Lyons and wife Ann, and several nieces and nephews. She also had been blessed with many cherished friends. Born in Drill, Va., (Russell County), she was raised in Splashdam, Va., near Haysi. Her early married years were spent in Bonnie Blue, Va., a coal mining camp, after which the family moved to Hazard, Ky., where Mrs. Lyons was employed by the Hazard Vocational School. In 1958, the Lyonses moved to their present home in Johnson City. Mrs. Lyons worked for more than two years at the E.T.S.U. library in the acquisitions department before joining Pet Dairy Division. At Pet, she served as the executive secretary to the purchasing director, then the president of the Dairy Division. She retired in 1988 after 25 years of service. She was a devoted Christian, being a member of First United Methodist Church until 1972, and thereafter, an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many leadership positions in the church, including president of Stake and local Women’s Relief Society organizations. Her talents and interests included sewing, knitting, cooking and canning, home crafts and bridge. A friendly, loving person who liked to make others laugh, she was admired by many and will be sorely missed. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II, a retired men’s clothing salesman for ReMine-Gobble Inc., with 45 years of service, and was a member of the First Baptist Church. She had been a resident of Florida and moved to Bristol in 1991. She was of the Catholic faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Taillon, and a daughter, Patricia Hensley. Winters Sr., age 86, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va., and was a son of the late Charles and Rebecca Winters. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Patricia Campbell. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, a retired employee from Brunswick Corporation and had previously worked at Lincolns Furniture Company for 20 years. Mr. Winters was a member of the Christian church. He is survived by his wife, Pearl M. Winters; two daughters, Jane C. Ruth Ann Wiseman KINGSPORT – Ruth Ann Wiseman, 82, died at 1:15 a.m. Feb. 7, 2004, at the home of her daughter, Ann McNew, in Helena, Ala. She lived in Kingsport practically all of her life and was a graduate of Dobyns- Bennett High School. She retired from Heritage Federal. She had been a member of First Presbyterian Church for more than 70 years and historian for Presbyterian women. She was a member of and treasurer for the Tennessee Porcelain Artist’s Association, the Pilot Club for more than 40 years and a board member for the Community Concerts. She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Wiseman, her parents, Jack and Earl Hyatt, and sisters, Jane Smith and Katherine Hester. Survivors include daughter, Ann Earlene McNew, Helena; two granddaughters, Meredith McNew Pestalitz, Birmingham, and Erin Ann McNew, Helena. Graveside services will be held 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Hill Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Walt Waddey officiating.
