Lillie Asher GLADE SPRING – Lillie Asher, age 78, passed away Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at her residence. She was a native of Tazewell, Va., but had lived in Glade Spring most of her life. She was one of 14 children born to the late Noah and Cleo Thomas Compton. She was a widow of Oliver B. Asher. Mrs. Asher was a member of Little Flock Holiness Church in Glade Spring. She is survived by six daughters, Margie Ann Manning of Shady Valley, Tenn., Rosie Lee Towers and Lillie Mae Bailey, both of Jacksonville, Fla., Peggy Ruth Dooley and Rosemary Morris, both of Clarksville, Tenn., and Marie Annette Rouse of Chilhowie; six sons, Oliver Asher of Chilhowie, Charles "Buddy" Asher of Glade Spring, Woodrow David Asher of Abingdon, Donald Lee Asher of Saltville, Victor Allen Asher of Glade Spring and Samuel Christopher Asher of Abingdon; 41 grandchildren; 70 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service was conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, at Garrett Funeral Home Chapel with her grandson, Rev. Oliver L. Asher, officiating. He was a native of Russell County, Va., and had lived in Bristol most of his life. He was a son of the late O.P. and Bertha Robinson Bailey. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was retired from Terry’s Snack Foods. Mr. Bailey was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Loraine Hudson Bailey. She was born at Wise and lived most of her life there. She was a homemaker and attended Nash’s Chapel Church. Betty was a daughter of the late Mitchell and Katherine Murriel Ramsey, and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Reese. Lawson CEDAR BLUFF – Mr. Charles David Lawson, age 64, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, at his home following a courageous extended illness. He was born in Raven, Va., and was a son of the late Leo and Velma Green Lawson, both Tazewell County natives. He had made his home in the Tazewell County area most of his life, was a 1957 graduate of Richlands High School, attended King College and was a 1962 graduate of Emory & Henry College. He was former general manager of WRIC Radio in Richlands and at the time of his death was a self- employed businessman. He was a member of the Richlands Lions Club, Tazewell County Airport Authority, Tazewell County Country Club and a former member of the Richlands Area Chamber of Commerce. Survivors include: former wife, Mary White Lawson of Paintlick, Va.; two sons, Mr. Charles Fletcher Lawson and wife, Kimberly of Richlands, and Mr. John C. Lula Hubbard Litton CASTLEWOOD – Lula Hubbard Litton, 100, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at her home. She was the daughter of Harrison and Ada Hubbard. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Carl Litton. She was the youngest and last surviving member of 14 children. She was a member of Esther Memorial United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday School and served as secretary and treasurer. She sang in the choir and took part in other activities of the church. She was a past member of the Copper Creek Home Demonstration Club and a member of the Castlewood Senior Citizens. Julian Elmer Sisler Julian Elmer Sisler, 84, formerly of Bristol Tennessee, passed away Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at North Fulton Regional Medical Center in Alpharetta, Ga., with his family by his side. He was the son of Charles Fay and Bess Sisler, and was preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Kathreen Sybil Sisler, whom he met in Australia during World War II. He was a native and lifelong resident of Bristol, until he moved to Roswell, Ga., in 1998. He was a graduate of Bristol Tennessee High School and attended Lincoln Memorial University, until enlisting in the Army on March 23, 1937. He served as a radio operator in the Army Air Corps in the Asiatic Pacific Theater, stationed in Australia and New Guinea during World War II. He received two bronze stars, one service stripe, three overseas service bars, the Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged as a sergeant on Oct. 24, 1945. He retired as a salesman from Dillard Paper Company in 1983, after 38 years of service. He was a member for over 50 years of the American Legion Post 145, Forty and Eight, member of the VFW Post 6975, The Lions Club, The Elks Lodge and a lifelong member of the State Street United Methodist Church. Survivors include his daughter, Diane S. Dishner and son-in-law, David E. Dishner, of Roswell; his granddaughter, Stacey Maloney Zazzara and her husband, Jeffrey; and two great grandchildren, Andrew Julian and Allyson Sybil Zazzara, all of Woodstock, Ga. Mr. Slaughter was reared in the Benhams-Mendota community of Washington County, Va. He graduated from Hamilton Institute at Mendota. Mr. Slaughter operated Tenneva Hide and Fur Company for 70 years. His principal business was the buying and selling of raw furs from all over the United States. At one time, he was the largest raw-fur dealer in North America. He maintained offices in New York City and agents in London, England and Frankfurt, Germany. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Elizabeth Harley Slaughter; two sons and daughters-in-law, Judge Frank L. Slaughter and Ann Slaughter and Dr. Fred D. Slaughter and Judy Ault Slaughter, all of Bristol Tennessee; eight grandchildren, Frank L. Slaughter Jr. of Bristol Tennessee, Arthur P. The committal service and interment will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus, with the Highlands Fellowship Veterans Honor Guard conducting military graveside rites. Pallbearers will be Russell D. Walls Jr., James Lee Walls, Mike McKamey, David Price, Jeff Lewis and Timmy Key.
