Norman Wampler, 82, Norton Fred Blankenship HURLEY, Va. – Fred Joseph Blankenship, 81 years of age, of the Right Fork of Guesses Fork area, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Riley and Virgie Spencer Blankenship. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of Pine Grove Regular Baptist Church and was a retired coal miner. Mr. Blankenship is survived by his wife, Stella Mae Mounts Blankenship, Hurley; two daughters, Brenda and husband Robert Musick, Bristol Tennessee, and Goldie and husband William Justice, Hurley; one son, Junior and wife Liz Blankenship, Abingdon, and one brother, Junior Blankenship, Statesville, N.C. Also, he is survived by 16 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and two great-great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Bransom Blankenship, one grandson, Jimmy Spoonhour, one granddaughter, Theresa Hartwell, and one great- granddaughter, Sydney Fleenor. David Breece Cox WYTHEVILLE – Dr. David Breece Cox, age 83, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. He was the son of the late David and Edah Haywood Cox. Dr. Cox was active in civic affairs, former member of Wytheville Town Council, the town Planning Commission, the Masonic Lodge, the Rotary Club, where he was a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellows Award, and longtime precinct chairman of the Democratic Party. A veteran of World War II, he was a graduate of Emory & Henry College and the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Cox practiced dentistry in Wytheville for many years, both in private practice and for the Wythe County Health Department and was a longtime member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Meek Cox. He is survived by his wife, Francelia Mercer Cox of Wytheville; children and spouses, Lynn Alt of Camp Hill, Pa., Scott and Evelyn Cox of Richmond, Steve and Lynne Cox of Richmond and Martha Cox and Sean Altekruse of Kensington, Md.; stepchildren, Reva Neel of Marion and Joyce and Rolfe Grubb of Blacksburg; sister, Betty Shipp of Vinton; brother, Frank Cox of Sugar Grove; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild and two step-grandchildren. She was born in McDowell County, W.Va., to the late Frank and Lydia Powers Cregger, and was preceded in death by her husband, Bryant E. Darnell Sr. She was member of the Macedonia Baptist Church in Chilhowie. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Bryant E. Geraldine Didion MANSFIELD, Ohio – Geraldine Musick Didion, 66, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, at Mansfield Memorial Homes. She was born in Honaker to the late Alden and Belle (Saylor) Musick. Until her retirement, Geraldine was employed at General Motors/Fisher Body and formerly at Scott Paper in Sandusky. Sara Kessler SURGOINSVILLE, Tenn. – Sara Elizabeth Kessler, 51, passed away Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol surrounded by her family, best friends and her beloved dog, Freezer Louis, who also passed away Friday. She was born in Morristown, Tenn., on March 6, 1952. She was a registered nurse, working in the coronary care unit at Holston Valley Medical Center. She loved gardening and traveling with her sister to the beaches of Mexico. Sara was actively seeking her pilot’s license when she became ill. She was a certified scuba diver and loved snow skiing and water skiing and anything that happens outdoors. Anyone that knew Sara knew she was a free spirit. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Kolford Griffin, and her grandparents, Maude and Hal Noe of Morristown. A native of Bluff City, he was the son of the late Robert L. and Bessie Lee Dempsey Malone. Mr. Malone was a member of Bluff City Baptist Church, a member of Zollicoffer Masonic Lodge 444 F&AM and a retired employee of Unisys. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Willliam Malone and Phillip Malone, and a great-grandchild, Alexander Dempsey McCroskey. Mildred was the oldest child of George and Lola Bell Harless Poore and was a lifelong resident of Bristol Virginia. She was a former employee of Rayless Department Store and was post mistress at Sullins College until its closing. She was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church and member of the Senior Saints at the church. Beside her parents, she was preceded in death by her youngest brother, George Allen Poore. Born Aug. 8, 1921, in Russell County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Gladys Wilson. She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a member of the Primitive Baptist church. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Earl Tiller, her grandparents, whom she was raised by, Jake and Orha Belle Wilson, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Survivors include two daughters, Lois Edwards of Bee, Va., and Retha Tiller and her husband Clayton of Council; four sons, Swanson Tiller of Claypool Hill, Va., Willis Tiller of the home, Raymond Tiller of Council and Ronald Tiller and his wife Elsie of Breaks, Va.; two sisters, Bessie Tiller of Council and Edith Connors of Burlington, N.C.; two brothers, Rev. Homer Wilson and Earl Wilson, both of Honaker; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and six great-great- grandchildren also survive. Walton, age 71, went to be with the Lord Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at his residence. Mr. Walton was born in Abingdon to the late Sydney V. and Catherine Sullivan Walton and was preceded in death by a sister, Stella Walker, a brother, Everette Walton, and two half brothers, Breece and Arthur Walton. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the 82nd Airborne Division during the Korean conflict. He was retired from Brunswick Corporation and was a member of the First Church of God in Marion. Born Nov. 23, 1921, a son to Charles and Laura (Armes) Wampler, he was retired from the postal service at University of Virginia College at Wise. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Chester Wampler, sister, Louise McPheron, and a granddaughter, Crystal Suzette Wampler.
