Gene Frank Bishop ABINGDON – Mr. Gene Frank Bishop, 63, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was the son of Anna Macher Bishop and the late Frank Eugene Bishop of Norristown, Pa., and the husband of Winifred (Peg) Cooper Bishop, to whom he was married for 40 years. He served as captain in the U.S. Army, serving in Neu Ulm and Crailsheim, Germany. Gene was active in the community, serving as financial secretary of St. John Lutheran Church, member of the Ecumenical Faith in Action Board and a participant in Abingdon area sports. He had been an official in Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia High School interscholastic associations, a former member of Toastmasters International and the Kiwanis Club and a retired accountant with the Browning, Lamie and Gifford law firm. He is survived by his wife and mother; a daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer Lee and Louis Ventura; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary Gene and Deborah Bishop and Christopher Meade and Jennifer Bishop; a sister, Judith of Wayne, Pa.; two brothers, Frank of Norristown and Steve of Berwick, Pa.; nine grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Cecil Deel VANSANT, Va. – Cecil Deel, 74 years of age, of the Leemaster area, passed away Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, in Wytheville Community Hospital following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Charlie Rufus and Patty Keen Deel. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of Little Freedom Old Regular Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Jewell Smokeless Coal Corporation. Mr. Deel was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Osborne Deel, Nov. 17, 2002. Lewis, born in Chilhowie, July 30, 1926, died Feb. 16, 2004. Mr. Lewis served during World War II on the destroyer, the U.S.S. Brush. He attended Milligan College and graduated from East Tennessee State University. On Nov. 10, 1951, he married Elizabeth Dolen, whom he had met while both attending college and they continued on a 52-year journey together. He was employed by US Gypsum in Chicago before transferring to Centex Corporation in 1965, where he retired from his position as executive vice president in 1988. In retirement, he enjoyed travel and was involved in many philanthropic organizations. Mr. Lewis was a man of class, who will be sadly missed by family and friends and his faithful black Lab, Lady. Our family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and support staff of Baylor University Hospital for their dedicated and compassionate care of Mr. Lewis during his battle with multiple myeloma. William Roscoe Price SALTVILLE – Mr. William Roscoe ("Sweet Pea") Price passed away peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at Grace Healthcare in Abingdon. Born Oct. 16, 1943, in Saltville, he was the son of William A. Price and Maryland Virginia Casey Price. He was preceded in death by his precious, protective, loving mother, who held him dearest to her heart, his grandparents, Charles Odgen and Carrie Johnson Price and William and Lucy Poston Casey. He grew up in Henrytown, attended R.B. Worthy High School. He was a former member of the Old Henrytown Church for several years. He always was so faithful and dedicated to the Lord and the church. He enjoyed ringing the church bell on Sunday morning. William sold and delivered the Saltville Progress newspaper for several years. He never met a stranger, always friendly and kind to everyone. He was loved by so many people. He touched a lot of hearts and lives with his sweet, gentle ways. Our hearts are broken over this special angel, and everyone that truly knew him, knew that he was. He made a very profound statement on Dec. 25, 2003: "You’re always made for a purpose." His last request was that he wanted the real truth to come out about his life as he quoted in Psalm 106. William wished to publicly thank the Price cousins and the Smith cousins for their faithfulness over the years. Also, Connie Powers, who gave so much and considered him her special angel. He is survived by his father, William A. Price of Saltville; two special sisters, Carolyn S. and William D. Chadwick II of Saltville and Nancy L. and Clarence C. She was born in Smyth County, Va., but had made her home in Konnarock most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Bryant and Jane Stringer Barr. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, James Severt, in 1940. She was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, July 31, 1964, after 20 years of service. Mrs. Severt was a member of the Azen Baptist Church. She is survived by nieces, nephews and cousins. Esther Pearl Trivett BRISTOL, Tenn. – Esther Pearl Trivett, age 90, of 1009 Bluff City Highway, passed away Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born on Aug. 29, 1913, in Bristol Tennessee. Mrs. Trivett was a housewife, was of the Presbyterian faith and a resident of the Cambridge House for the past three years. Mrs. Trivett was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Trivett, and two daughters, June Carolyn Silcox and Brenda Faye McReynolds. Mrs. Trivett is survived by one grandson, Tim Silcox, and two granddaughters, Julie McReynolds and Cindy Gross. Marylene Gay Yates HAYSI – Marylene Yates, age 58, of Route 2, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy. Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Lincus and Dorothy Deel Yates. She was a housewife and a member of Russell Prater Old Regular Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a child and a sister, Betty Jean. Survivors include her husband, Bennie Yates; two sons, Bennie Yates Jr. and wife Marcella of Garden, Va., and Shawn Yates of the home; a daughter, Wanda Hagy and husband Denver of Deskins, Va.; five sisters, Minnie Kinder of Narrows, Va., and Martha Kelly, Katherine Coleman, Bessie Hargett and Lucille Hackney, all of Haysi; a brother, Andy F. Yates, and five grandchildren, Bennie Yates III, Latasha Yates, Courtney Yates, Jasmine Hagy and Britney Hagy. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, at Russell Prater Church, with Elders Jackie Yates, Andy Deel and Roger Coleman officiating. Burial will follow in the Yates Cemetery, Route 2, Haysi. Pallbearers will be Michael Yates, Joseph Kinder, Brian Hargett, Chuck Hutchenson, Denver Hagy, Eddie Blankenship, Billy Yates and family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. H. Patel and Dr. Narayana. The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18, and Thursday, Feb. 19, at Russell Prater Church, where an evening service will be held at 7 p.m. both nights.
