Born May 22, 1933, at Dry Fork in Tazewell County, Va., she was a daughter of the late John and Millie Stevenson Quesenberry. She attended Boyd’s Chapel Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George (June) Asbury, five sisters, Margaret Hawkins, Virginia Quesenberry, Reberta Quesenberry, Myrtle Quesenberry and Mary Quesenberry, five brothers, James Quesenberry, Robert Quesenberry, Raymond Quesenberry, Estil Quesenberry and Jack Quesenberry, and one granddaughter, Lillie Catherine Marrs. Survivors include two daughters, Roberta Helbert and husband Gene of Grapefield, Va., and Elizabeth Asbury of Baptist Valley, Va.; six sons, George W. Asbury and wife Karin of Hinesville, Ga., James Asbury and Philip Asbury, both of Dry Fork, Tom Asbury and wife Sue of Horsepen, Va., Dexter Asbury and wife Cheryl of Baptist Valley and Roger Asbury and wife Nahoma of Bishop, Va.; two brothers, Charlie Quesenberry of Maryland and John Quesenberry of Grapefield; 32 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, with the Rev. Kenny Fields and the Rev. Danny Puckett officiating. Gene Frank Bishop ABINGDON – Mr. Gene Frank Bishop, 63, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was the son of Anna Macher Bishop and the late Frank Eugene Bishop of Norristown, Pa., and the husband of Winifred (Peg) Cooper Bishop, to whom he was married for 40 years. He served as captain in the U.S. Army, serving in Neu Ulm and Crailsheim, Germany. Gene was active in the community, serving as financial secretary of St. John Lutheran Church, member of the Ecumenical Faith in Action Board and a participant in Abingdon area sports. He had been an official in Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia High School interscholastic associations, a former member of Toastmasters International and the Kiwanis Club and a retired accountant with the Browning, Lamie and Gifford law firm. He is survived by his wife and mother; a daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer Lee and Louis Ventura; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary Gene and Deborah Bishop and Christopher Meade and Jennifer Bishop; a sister, Judith of Wayne, Pa.; two brothers, Frank of Norristown and Steve of Berwick, Pa.; nine grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of life memorial service will be held at St. John Lutheran Church, Abingdon, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004. "Buck" Buchanan, 84, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, in the Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital, Big Stone Gap, after an extended illness. He was a retired heavy equipment operator for the Clinchfield Coal Company. A veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II, with a staff sergeant ranking, gaining a Bronze Star, French Honor-Croix de Guerre and numerous proud medals. Mr. Buchanan was a deacon and member of the Dry Fork Freewill Baptist Church, a member of the UMWA and a past member of the Grace Quartet as a bass singer, Coeburn Rescue Squad and a Little League Coach, gaining many friends over the years. Surviving are his loving and caring wife of 52 years, Barbara J. Buchanan; four sons, Larry and his wife Fay Buchanan of Castlewood; Rodney and his wife Sherry Buchanan, Joel Buchanan and Barry and his wife Missy Buchanan, all of Coeburn; a brother and sister-in-law, Ivan and Fay Buchanan of Coeburn; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Richard Calhoun Sr. BRISTOL, Tenn. – Richard Carl Calhoun Sr., 73, of 1249 Carolina Ave., died Feb. 18, 2004. Mr. Calhoun was born May 6, 1930, to the late John and Lula Woods Calhoun. Mr. Calhoun lived in the Bristol Area all of his life and was retired from the Blue Ridge Kenworth Company. Mr. Calhoun was preceded in death by his son, Richard C. Calhoun Jr. Survivors include wife of 49 years, Jane Carolyn Humphrey Calhoun; sister, Virginia Waddell; brothers, J.P. Calhoun, Rosevelt Calhoun, Cecil Calhoun and Raymond "Ray" Calhoun, and several nieces and nephews. Homer Carl Cuddy FRANKLIN, N.C. – Homer Carl Cuddy, 73, died after a long illness on Monday, Feb. 16, 2004. He was born Oct. 27, 1930, in Bristol Virginia, the only child of the late Joe Cuddy and Cora Arnold Cuddy. He was an Army veteran and graduate of Old Dominion University and the University of Georgia. Homer was a teacher and coach in Virginia, Georgia and North Carolina. He retired in 1995 from the Haywood County School System. He was a member of South Macon Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Joan Taylor Cuddy of Franklin, and his daughter, Mary Elizabeth Cuddy and her husband Henry C. Cunningham of Orono, Maine. The family appreciates the loving care given Homer in his last year and a half by the staff at Mountain Trace Nursing Center in Sylva. Jimmie Gilliland-Martinez BRISTOL, Va. – Jimmie John Gilliland-Martinez, age 34, of 1925 Kings Mill Pike, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center from injuries received in an automobile accident. Ms. Martinez was born on Oct. 19, 1969, in Los Angeles, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Raymond and Sue Freda Walling Gilliland. She had lived in the Bristol area for the past two years and was an assistant manager at the Dollar General Store. Ms. Martinez was preceded in death by one son, Jarred Gilliland. Ms. Martinez is survived by one son, Richard Glenn Taylor, and one daughter, Carol Ann Taylor, both of Saltville; one sister, Dutch Leydel of Burlington, Wis.; two half sisters, Cathy Blair of Bristol Virginia and Lynn Norris of Indiana; one special cousin, Diana MacMurray of Bristol Virginia; four nephews, Noah, Brandon, Gary and Adam, and one niece, Betsy. She was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. She was secretary-treasurer of Higginbotham Automotive, which she operated with her husband, Richard A. Higginbotham Sr., prior to his death in 1996. She was also preceded in death by daughter, Mary Jane Higginbotham in 1958. Survivors: sons and daughters-in-law, Richard A. Lewis, born in Chilhowie, July 30, 1926, died Feb. 16, 2004. Mr. Lewis served during World War II on the destroyer, the U.S.S. Brush. He attended Milligan College and graduated from East Tennessee State University. On Nov. 10, 1951, he married Elizabeth Dolen, whom he had met while both attending college and they continued on a 52-year journey together. He was employed by US Gypsum in Chicago before transferring to Centex Corporation in 1965, where he retired from his position as executive vice president in 1988. In retirement, he enjoyed travel and was involved in many philanthropic organizations. Mr. Lewis was a man of class, who will be sadly missed by family and friends and his faithful black Lab, Lady. Our family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and support staff of Baylor University Hospital for their dedicated and compassionate care of Mr. Lewis during his battle with multiple myeloma. William Roscoe Price SALTVILLE – Mr. William Roscoe ("Sweet Pea") Price passed away peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at Grace Healthcare in Abingdon. Born Oct. 16, 1943, in Saltville, he was the son of William A. Price and Maryland Virginia Casey Price. He was preceded in death by his precious, protective, loving mother, who held him dearest to her heart, his grandparents, Charles Odgen and Carrie Johnson Price and William and Lucy Poston Casey. He grew up in Henrytown, attended R.B. Worthy High School. He was a former member of the Old Henrytown Church for several years. He always was so faithful and dedicated to the Lord and the church. He enjoyed ringing the church bell on Sunday morning. William sold and delivered the Saltville Progress newspaper for several years. He never met a stranger, always friendly and kind to everyone. He was loved by so many people. He touched a lot of hearts and lives with his sweet, gentle ways. Our hearts are broken over this special angel, and everyone that truly knew him, knew that he was. He made a very profound statement on Dec. 25, 2003: "You’re always made for a purpose." His last request was that he wanted the real truth to come out about his life as he quoted in Psalm 106. William wished to publicly thank the Price cousins and the Smith cousins for their faithfulness over the years. Also, Connie Powers, who gave so much and considered him her special angel. Stallard, 96, 531 Wilson St.,went to her eternal rest on Feb. 17, 2004. She was born Feb. 28, 1907, Winston-Salem, N.C., to James A. and Margaret Bostic Brewer, was married to Darwell O. Stallard Jan. 16, 1925, lived in Norfolk, Va., until her husband’s naval career ended and lived in Winston-Salem and Greensboro before moving to Southwest Virginia about 1936. She was a Church Hill resident since 1992. She was baptized at First Baptist Church, Greensboro, and was known all her life for her Christian deeds. She acted as a midwife in North Carolina and Virginia when babies were delivered at home. She was always available to sit with the sick and was a Bible scholar and a prayer warrior. In later life, she enjoyed crocheting, making bead ornaments and corresponding with numerous family and friends. She liked to keep up with accomplishments of her family. Her interests were fishing, traveling, music and baseball. She was the eldest member of her family. She was predeceased by her husband in 1960, daughter, Lona (Tots) Miller, grandson, Glenn D. Miller, daughter-in-law, Waneatta Stallard, three sons-in-law, Eston D. Miller, Howard L. Thomas and Sidney L. Boggs, sisters, Eva Griffin, Lillian Chambers, Georgia Edwards, Mildred Brewer, Ruth Teague and Lula Carroll, and brothers, Edward, Joseph, Henry and Dempsey Brewer. He was a son of the late John Hugh Stout and Anna Lee Sage Stout. He was a native of Bristol Virginia, and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Abingdon. He was a landscape designer for over 50 years and also retired as a security officer at Bristol Mall. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Childress Stout; three sons, Tony Stout and his wife Gwendolyn of Bluff City, Ronnie D. Stout and his wife Teresa of Gray, Tenn., and Jerry Lee Stout of Bristol; a daughter, Sandra Sullivan of Bluff City; three grandsons, Shane Sullivan and his wife Tina, Ronnie Stout Jr. and his wife Christy and Neil Stout and his wife Teresa; a granddaughter, Shannon Abele and her husband Anthony; nine great-grandchildren, Amber and D.J. Katherine Strouth BRISTOL, Va. – Katherine Ruth Strouth, age 78, of 23201 Conner Lane, died on Feb. 17, 2004, at Bristol Regional Medical Center from injuries sustained in a house fire. She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and was a former employee of Big Jack Manufacturing. Mrs. Strouth was of the Baptist faith and was preceded in death by her husband, Joe H. Strouth, and a son, Joe Haskel Strouth. She had lived in Bristol for approximately 35 years and was a member of Midway Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, William Baker, and a sister, Zola Baker Payne. She is survived by her daughter, Janice M. Williams Hibbs and her husband Fred of Bristol; two sons, Randall B. Williams and his wife Jan of Brevard, N.C., and Conrad Williams and his wife Louise of Hendersonville, Tenn.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
