He was preceded in death by his first wife, Amogene Hunt Dean, the mother of his children, his parents, James H. and Mary Bradley Dean, and second wife, Mildred Taylor Dean. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Born Aug. 15, 1939, in Ashe County, N.C., he was a son of the late Robert Arthur Dillard and Effie Miller Dillard Bard. He lived in the area for the past 34 years and attended Gent’s Chapel Church. He was a disabled coal miner, having been employed by Clinchfield Coal Company, and was a member of the UMWA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Nila James Dillard of the home; one son, Tony Dillard of the home; one sister, Rose Marie Miller of West Jefferson, N.C.; three brothers, Bruce Dillard and Harold Dillard, both of West Jefferson, and Benny Dillard of Darlington, Md.; three special great-nephews, Chance Mobley, Tyler Ratliff and Sedrik Sauls, and two special great-nieces, Hannah Ratliff and Jordan Sauls. James Arthur Glover ABINGDON – James Arthur Glover, age 81, a resident of 372 Oakland St., died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was the son of the late Adam Charles and Margaret Smeltzer Glover. He was a combat veteran of World War II, serving with Company A, 331st Infantry Regiment, and was honorably discharged with a Purple Heart. He served 15 years with the Washington County Sheriff’s Department. He was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Glover. Mr. Glover was an avid gardener and fisherman as well as a loving father and grandfather. Ervin Hess HONAKER – Mr. Ervin Hess, age 87, of the Little River section, passed away Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, at his home following a long illness. Born March 10, 1916, in Russell County, Va., he was a son of the late Dave and Minnie Honaker Hess. A lifelong resident of the Honaker area, he was a retired coal miner with 25 years of service and a farmer. He was a member of the UMWA. He was a member of the Kingdom Hall Lebanon Jehovah’s Witness Congregation. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Joan Shortridge, two brothers, Arthur Hess and Dave Hess Jr., and two sisters, Betty Henderliter and Cordelia Combs. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Pauline Harris Hess of the home; two sons, Ronald Hess and his wife Wanda and Dave Hess, all of Honaker; two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Ron Meade of Bristol Virginia and Brenda and Bob Murphy of Marion; three sisters, Evangeline Ratledge of Conowingo, Md., Lou Hess of Illinois and Mary Ellen Miller of Honaker; three brothers, Clyde Hess, Clarence Hess and Fayte Hess, all of Honaker; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren also survive. Cecile Holt LEBANON – Cecile Kathleen Holt, 92, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004. She was born on July 13, 1911, and was the daughter of the late Con Francis and Clara Bell Salyer. Cecile was a lifelong resident of Russell County and was a member of Stuarts Chapel Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert (Ollie) Holt, brothers, Oakley Salyer and Clint Salyer, and her son-in- law, David C. Glovier. She is survived by her son, J.C. Holt Sr. and wife Shirley, and her daughter, Nancy H. Glovier, all of Lebanon. Survivors also include her sisters, Sally Osborne of Lebanon and Lena Greene of Kingsport; brothers, Frank Salyer and Wade Salyer, both of Lebanon, and Wood Salyer of St. Paul; grandsons, J.C. Johnston III, 84, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol. Born in Richmond, he was educated in the public schools of Kingsport and Bristol and graduated from Davidson College with degrees in chemistry and political science. In 1941, he joined Tennessee Eastman Company as a chemist. He later transferred to Chicago as a district sales manager and retired from Eastman Chemical Products in Kingsport. Mr. Johnston was an avid golfer and former member of the Senior Golf League of Tri-Cities. He was member of First Presbyterian Church of Bristol Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Rev. Dr. Thomas P. Johnston Jr. and Mary F. Johnston, and one sister, Hunter J. White. Surviving are his wife, Betty G. Barbara Ann Powers BRISTOL, Va. – Barbara Ann Powers, age 64, of 20150 Benhams Road, went to be with her Lord and Savior Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center after many years of pain and suffering. Mrs. Powers was born on July 30, 1939, in Washington County, Va., to the late Mr. and Mrs. Roy and Laura Reed Canter. Mrs. Powers had lived all her life in the Bristol area, was a retired supervisor from Terry’s Potato Chips, was a member of the Calvary Bible Church and attended the South Bristol United Methodist Church. Mrs. Powers was a very loving mother, grandmother, sister and a friend in Christ. She was loved by all who knew her and was an inspiration to many. She loved to live and enjoyed being surrounded by those who loved her. She was a precious gift from God to her family. Mrs. Powers was preceded in death by her husband, William Harold Powers. She was born in Abingdon and spent most of her life in the Bristol area. She was the widow of C. Bradley Price. Mrs. Price was of the Methodist faith. Survivors include one brother, B.E. Tommy Junior Roark BRISTOL, Tenn. – Tommy Junior Roark, age 65, of 1618 Paperville Road, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, at his residence. Mr. Roark was born on Dec. 30, 1938, in Bristol Tennessee, to the late Thomas Jefferson Roark and Elsie Roark Geiger. He was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and was of the Baptist faith. Thomas Stoots BRISTOL, Tenn. – Thomas Martin Stoots, 87, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004 in the Bristol Regional Medical Center following a long illness. Born July 23, 1916, a son of the late Albert Stoots and the late America Robins Stoots, he was a former resident of Lebanon, moving to Bristol 30 years ago. He was a disabled employee of the Bristol Tennessee schools and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the battleship Texas. He received the Asiatic- Pacific Area Bar with two Bronze Stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, American Area Bar and the European-Middle Eastern-North African Area Bar with two Stars. He was a member of the House of Prayer Baptist Church in Nicklesville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by daughter, Betty Jean Gilliam, a grandson, Ronnie Burke, a great-grandson, Brian Austin Teague, a son- in-law, Roy Burke, three brothers, Dan Stoots, Guy Stoots and Bill Ollie Stoots, and four sisters, Minnie Monk, Isabel Miller, Agnus Hale and Melissa Johnson. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Cleo Hale Stoots; two daughters, Audrey Burke, Church Hill, Tenn., and Connie Leonard and husband Wesley Leonard, Bristol Tennessee; two sons, Thomas C. She was born Nov. 22, 1925, at Bucu, Va., and was the beloved daughter of the late Spurgeon and Ura Owens Penland of Bucu, Dickenson County, Va. She was preceded in death by her only brother, Raymond Penland of Dearborn Heights, Mich. Elsa is survived by her husband of 56 years, C.P. Williams of Rosedale; one son and daughter-in-law, Pat and Katy Williams of New Castle, Pa.; two daughters, Pam Williams of Tucson, Ariz., and Belinda Anders of Santa Fe, N.M.; six grandsons; one granddaughter; four great-grandchildren and four sisters, Pearle Bumgarner of Ashburn, Va., Mable Powers of Colorado Springs, Colo., Gladys Keene of Bristol Tennessee and Pauline Howard of Abingdon. Many loving nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends also survive. She was a member of Honaker First United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir and many hours of fellowship before her illness. A celebration of life service will be held for Elsa on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Honaker First United Methodist Church, Honaker, with a reception following in the fellowship hall.
