Bowman MARION – James R. "Buck" Bowman, 70, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, in the Smyth County Community Hospital. Born in Smyth County, he was the son of the late Harrison and Grace Wolfe Bowman. He was a veteran of the Korean War having served in the U.S. Navy and was retired from Brunswick Corporation, with over 35 years of service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Delmar Ray, Leroy "Sam", Ralph "Hooch", Kenneth, Harrison "June" and Charles Henry Bowman, and three sisters, Katie Doane, Elizabeth Pierce and Ruth Bowman. Buck was an avid Virginia Tech football fan and enjoyed his garden. Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Shirley Wyatt Bowman of Marion; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debra and Rick Yarber and Brenda and Wayne Taylor, all of Marion; three sons and daughters-in-law, J.R. and Peggy Bowman of Abingdon, Dale and Virginia Dawn Bowman of Marion and Billy Bowman of Bluemont, Va.; one sister, Mrs. Bruce (Ann) Price of Marion; 11 grandchildren, Levi Yarber, Lucas Yarber, Leslie Yarber, Brandy Taylor, Sandy Taylor, Kayla Taylor, Dustin Bowman, Chad Bowman, Beth Bowman Cato, Brandon Bowman and Kelsey Hart; four great-grandchildren, Abby Yarber, Aubanie Yarber, Cole Yarber and Lily Bowman; four step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Richard Philip Brod BRISTOL, Tenn. – Richard Philip "Dick" Brod, 62, of 2400 Anderson St., passed on to be with our Lord and Savior Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at Wellmont Hospice House after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born in Chicago and had resided in Bristol Tennessee for the past 30 years. He worked at Bristol Compressors for the past 25 years and was loved by many of his co-workers, friends and family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Philip Anthony and Neva Lakin Brod. Mr. Brod is survived by his loving wife of 12 years, Mary Jarrett Brod; two daughters, Cindy Lama of McHenry, Ill., and Beverly Neadeau of Disputana, Va.; three sons, David Philip Brod and William Walter Brod, both of Bristol, and Richard Devere Brod of Johnson City; six grandchildren, Gail and Ashley Neadeau, Joshua Brod, Rusty Brod and Amanda and Michael Smith, and two great- grandchildren, Madison Williams and Carter Kruse. Alexis Deese ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. – The Reverend Alexis Catherine Deese, 56, 416 Sabine St., died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Jersey City, N.J., she was a daughter of the late Alex and Helen Breita Modrakowski. Rev. Deese was a Christian of the Methodist tradition. She began her ministry on Feb. 1, 2002, and had faithfully served several small membership churches in the Holston Conference. Survivors include her husband, the Reverend Raymond C. Elizabeth Hamm COEBURN – Elizabeth Roberta Stapleton Hamm, 86, passed away in her home on Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, after a long illness. She was born in Dungannon, Va., April 3, 1917, the daughter of the late Elbert N. and Minnie Wheatley Stapleton. Her husband, Woodrow E. Hamm, preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were a granddaughter, Katherine Yvone Hamm, five brothers, W. Ambrose Smith, Andrew J. Stapleton, James W. Stapleton, Robert L. Stapleton and her twin brother, Elbert Newton Stapleton Jr., and two sisters, Rosalie Stapleton and Marie Stapleton Hall. Surviving are her four sons, James N. Hamm of Coeburn, Eddie D. Hamm of Dungannon, John J. Hamm of Coeburn and Woodrow S. Hamm of Talbott, Tenn.; five grandchildren, James N. Hamm Jr. and Errett J. Hamm, both of Coeburn, Michael W. Hamm of Columbia, Tenn., M. David Hamm of Palatine, Ill., and Beverlee Elizabeth Hamm Forbes of Seattle; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Having graduated from Radford State Teachers College June 5, 1939, she taught in the Scott and Wise County Schools for 20 years. She spent the greater part of her life rearing four sons and working on their farm. She was a member of Mary’s Chapel Freewill Baptist Church, where she had enjoyed fellowship in the Ladies Sunday School Class since 1944 and until her illness prevented her from attending. He was born June 15, 1916, in Jenkins, Ky., and was a son of the late Isom and Tillie Goble Hatfield. He had lived in Beckley, W.Va., before moving to Bristol in 1961. He was a car salesman, where he had worked for several dealerships in Kingsport and Bristol, and was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II. He was a Christian and a member of the Zollicoffer Masonic Lodge 444 F & AM of Bluff City. He was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters. He was born in Richlands and was a son of the late Samuel M. and Betty L. Davis Hunnell, both natives of the Tazewell County area. Leonard had made his home in the Richlands area most of his life and was a former employee of both the Tazewell County School System and the Town of Cedar Bluff. He was of the Pentecostal faith. In addition to his parents, one brother, Mr. Roger Lee Hunnell, preceded him in death. Survivors are three sisters, Ms. Patricia A. Hunter, 88, beloved husband and father, died peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004. His only grandchild and her husband, Kristy and Dan Miller of Harrogate, England, and his first great-grandchild, Katelyn Morgan Miller, also mourn his loss. Pauline Lindamood PINEY FLATS – Pauline Pearl McKamey Minnick Lindamood, 91, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at Wellmont Hospice House. She was born in Bluff City, a daughter of the late John R. and Lillie Bertha Sams McKamey, and live most of her life in Bristol. She attended public schools in Bluff City and Kingsport and graduated from Bluff City High School in 1931. She later attended Bristol Tennessee Technical School and served as the secretary at Anderson Street United Methodist Church. She was active in the P.T.A. and the Homemakers Club. She was a longtime member of Anderson Street United Methodist Church and was a member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service. Upon moving to Piney Flats, she joined Enterprise United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Allen Lindamood of Piney Flats; a son, Richard C. She was born April 28, 1902, in Hancock County to the late James Daniel and Maggie Spitzer, but she lived most of her life in the Bristol area.
