John Brown Jr. RICHLANDS – Mr. John William Brown Jr., age 82, passed away Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, in a Richlands hospital following a long illness. Born at Doran, Va., he was the son of the late John and Mandy Hager Brown. He was a retired coal miner and member of the U.M.W.A. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Bible Way Church at Raven. Mr. Brown was a volunteer with the Richlands Little League, serving as a coach for many years. In addition to his parents, Mr. Brown was preceded in death by five brothers, Charlie Brown, Paul Brown, Clint Brown, Clyde Brown and Rufus Brown, four sisters, Mildred Brown, Janie Brown, Lelia Fortner and Lucy Short, and two grandsons, Joshua Russell and C.J. Richardson. Raymond Cantrell PILGRIMS KNOB, Va. – Mr. Raymond Ellis Cantrell, age 82, went to be with his Lord on Feb. 21, 2004. A lifelong resident of Pilgrims Knob, he was born on Feb. 25, 1921, to the late James and Mary Louise Boyd Cantrell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, three half sisters, four brothers and four half brothers. Mr. Cantrell was a disabled coal miner and a member of the U.M.W.A. Local 7327. He was a member of the Pentecostal Faith Temple at Whitewood, Va., and was a World War II veteran. He was a member of the John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion at Grundy and the last surviving founding member of the Whitewood Lions Club. Mr. Cantrell is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mrs. Jeanette Vernie Bucklen Cantrell; five daughters, Ellen Keen of Pilgrims Knob, Cheryl Smith of Red Root Ridge, Va., Jenefer Rife of Slate Creek, Va., Althea Hicks of Jewell Ridge, Va., and Marsha Blankenship of Prater, Va.; two sons, Jeff Cantrell and Gregory Cantrell, both of Pilgrims Knob; one sister, Rosie Keene of St. Paul; 13 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 15 step-great- grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his grandfather, Willie Musick, grandmother, Elizabeth Musick, step-grandmother, Beulah Duty, and one brother, Dallas Dwayne Duty. Asa Edward Farmer CLINTWOOD – Asa Edward Farmer, age 82, passed away Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at Heritage Hall in Clintwood. He was a lifelong resident of Dickenson County and a member of Clintwood Calvary Baptist Church. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Farmer was one of Dickenson County’s most decorated World War II veterans. A skilled bazooka operator, he fought on the front lines in Italy. Captured during a battle, he was a prisoner of war for seven months. Mr. Farmer was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Anne Farmer, and a son, Danny Farmer. His survivors include six children, Paul Farmer and wife Nina of Clintwood, John Farmer of Clintwood, Margaret Farmer and husband Earl of Wewawitchka, Fla., Diana Farmer and friend Larry Hillman of Bristol Tennessee, Jack Farmer of Clintwood and Betty Farmer and husband Jim Manning of Sylva, N.C.; one sister, Mary Ellen Mullins of Clintwood; two brothers, Ervin Farmer of Grants Pass, Ore., and Alfred Farmer of Clintwood; grandchildren, Ryan Fleming, Tanya Boggs, Amanda Thomas and Quinn Manning; great-grandchild, Hannah Boggs, and several nieces and nephews. Terry Lee Ratliff BIG ROCK, Va. – Terry Lee Ratliff, 44 years of age, passed away Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004, at Buchanan General Hospital following a short illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of Mrs. Fern Ratliff Thomas, Big Rock. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, was of the Pentecostal faith and a retired truck driver. Mr. Ratliff is survived by his former wife, Velita Belcher Ratliff, Big Rock; his mother, Mrs. Fern Ratliff Thomas, Big Rock, and five brothers, Russell Ratliff, Grundy, Bobby Ratliff, Grundy, Randy Ratliff, Conaway, Va., Paul Ratliff, Big Rock, and Roy David Ratliff, Richlands. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Frances Ann Stiltner. He was a longtime resident of Wise County and a graduate of Lebanon High School. Iven was the chief electrician for Lambert Coal Company. He dedicated his life to the coal industry, but was known for his creative inventions and unique woodworking talent. Iven was preceded in death by his parents, Clara Bell Ray and Alvie Ray of Russell County. Survivors: wife, Carol Robinson Ray, Wise; daughter, Letha Ray, Bristol Virginia, and Cinnamon Swire, Fort Bellvoir, Va.; sons, Brian Ray, Lebanon, Joey Carico, Wise, and Wes Carico, Coeburn; sister, Audry Ray, Virginia; brothers, Otis Ray, Chilhowie, Kyle Ray, Tennessee, and Gary Ray, North Carolina; a host of beloved friends and relatives and 11 grandchildren.
