Lucy Boyd SWORDS CREEK, Va. – Mrs. Lucy Ellen Whited Boyd, age 92, passed away Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, in Swords Creek at the home of her daughter, following a lengthy illness. She was born in Russell County and was the daughter of the late Felix Jerome and Nannie Elizabeth Casey Whited, both Russell County natives. She had made her home in Russell County her entire life and was a member of the Swords Creek Block Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Graham Boyd, two sons, Graham Paul Boyd and Pat Boyd, one half sister and six half brothers. Survivors are two daughters, Joan Rose of Bartlett, Tenn., and Alice Faye White and husband Carl of Swords Creek; two sons, Iles P. "Cap" Boyd and wife Rita of Swords Creek and Delano Boyd and wife Jimmie of Cleveland, Texas; four half sisters, Doris McGhee of Raven, Va., Billie Wilson of Red Ash, Va., Joyce Compton of Jewell Ridge, Va., and Sally Gibson of Red Ash; six half brothers, Willard Whited of Raven, Rome Whited of Doran, Va., Roger Whited of Raven, Darrell Whited of Virginia, Jr. Boyd of Raven and Walter Whited of Martinsville, Va.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild also survive. Juanita Combs BRISTOL, Va. – Miss Juanita Combs, 89, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at the Cambridge House. She was born in Johnson City and graduated from Science Hill High School. She also lived in Bristol, Richmond, Charlotte, N.C., Atlanta and Long Island, N.Y. Upon retiring from the Singer Sewing Machine Company in 1985, she returned to her home in Bristol. She was a longtime and faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church. Miss Combs was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde H. Combs, a sister and brother-in-law, Ruby and C.A. Solomon of Bristol, and a brother and sister-in-law, Austin and Marge Combs of Daytona Beach, Fla. She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Betty Combs Pitt and husband Mac of Richmond, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Davison ABINGDON – Mrs. Novella Wise Davison, age 79, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2004, at the Cambridge House Health Care Center in Bristol Tennessee. She was born on Nov. 10, 1924, and was a daughter of the late George Wise and Roxie Anderson Wise. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Cyrus Oda Davison, and a brother, Glover Wise. Mrs. Davison was a member of the State Street Church of Christ and was a longtime resident of the Wyndale Community. She is survived by two sons, Wayne E. Davison and Oda L. She was born Aug. 23, 1925, in Whitmell, Va, the daughter of Ferdinand Lanier Pollok and Blanche Collins Pollok. She graduated from Stratford College in Danville, Va., received her R.N. at the UVa School of Nursing and was later awarded a B.S. in nursing education. She taught at the UVa School of Nursing for 14 years. Her class of 1959 established a scholarship in her honor. In Abingdon, Anne taught at the hospital school of nursing and helped establish the Virginia Highlands Community College Nursing School. Anne was a member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church and its choir and active on several committees. She was a life member of the Johnston Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, member of "Friends of Barter" Theater, former member of the Abingdon Booklovers Club and a volunteer for the Virginia Highlands Festival. She was predeceased by three sisters, Sally Kate Pollok, Elsie Pollok Harper and Virginia Pollok Clark, and seven brothers, William Pollok, Irving Pollok, Ferd Pollok, George Pollok Sr., Collins Pollok, James Pollok and Robert Pollok. She is survived by her husband, John B. Hemmings (Jack) of Lexington; brothers, Harry Pollok and Harold Pollok, both of Whitmell; sister, Agnes Mitchell of Danville, and numerous nieces and nephews. Cleo Cox Lee SUGAR GROVE, Va. – Cleo Cox Lee, 100, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at her home. Born on July 27, 1903, in the Bridle Creek Community of Grayson County, she was the daughter of the late Reece and Mary Blevins Cox. Mrs. Lee was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Sugar Grove, where she was the "mother of the church" for over 40 years and was a member of the Shaffer Memorial Ladies Auxiliary, as well as supporting the church she grew up in, Oak Grove United Methodist Church near Independence. She avidly worked to upgrade the facilities at the Carnegie School in Marion and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in by her husband, Fred Jefferson Lee in 1971, and three sons, Fred Jefferson Lee Jr., Ellis Letcher Lee and Clarence Franklin Lee, a daughter and two sons-in-law, Mary Frances and Harold Boyden and Leon M. Boyd, a grandson, Phillip Stanton Lee, as well as one sister and four brothers. Surviving are four daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and James Purefoy, Shirley Boyd and Melvin Gaskins, all of Marion, Emily and Nathaniel Collins of Plainfield, N.J., and Lorraine and Randy Jackson of Marion; three sons and four daughters-in-law, Robert C. Martin, 82, 5899 Highway 11E, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004. in the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Bristol Tennessee, Mr. Martin had lived the majority of his life in Piney Flats. He was a son of the late Alexander and Emma Scott Martin, and was also preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. He was a retired employee of Raytheon Co., Bristol. Mr. Martin was a member of Piney Flats Presbyterian Church and the M.M. Martin Masonic Lodge 547, Piney Flats. He was an Army veteran of both World War II and the Korean War and was the recipient of the World War II Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Meritorious Service Unit Award and the Japan and Germany Army of Occupation Medal. He is survived by his wife, Mary E. Shell Martin; one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Tommy Vanover, Unicoi; one sister, Evelyn Booher, Bristol Tennessee, and several nieces and nephews. William C. Miller BLUFF CITY – William C. "Bill" Miller, 53, beloved husband of Joan Bishop Miller, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a son of the late Lonnie E. Miller and Florence Crain Miller and a lifelong resident of Sullivan County. He was a Vietnam veteran of the U.S. Army, an employee of Miller Painting Company and was affiliated with Shekinah Ministries. He operated a booth at Tri-City Flea Market for several years and was an avid fisherman and NASCAR and Vols fan. In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Vanessa Davis and her husband Mike of Bristol Tennessee; three sisters, Karen Miller of Jonesborough, Lana Lee Miller of Bluff City and Reba Sutton and her husband Nick of Johnson City; two brothers, Pete Miller and his wife Diane of Mount Holly, N.J., and Terry Miller and his wife Sher of Bristol; three grandchildren, Ashley Tillison, Dayne Davis and Austin Davis; an aunt, Janie Hensley of Blountville; an uncle, Ward Crain of Chicago, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Muncey, age 86, passed away Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands. Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late William R. and Elizabeth Duty Runyon. She had lived in Indiana for 32 years and spent the last 11 in Honaker. Mrs. Muncey had worked in Ohio for five years in a factory, for Royal Dry Cleaners in Grundy for 14 years and at Exess Wire in Indiana for 14 ˝ years. She was a member of Duty View Primitive Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Elmer Rene Owens, her second husband, Hassell Muncey, five sisters, Mae Gilbert, Blanche Childress, Carrie Owens, Rosie Childress and Mary Jane Deel, and three brothers, Lee Runyon, Tivis Runyon and Holiday Runyon. Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Runyon of Ligonier, Ind., and Kathy (Auty) Hackney of Honaker; six grandsons, Russell, Danny, Greg, James, Mark and Roscoe; one granddaughter, Tina Hackney; a sister, Thelma Fleming of Florida; a brother, William "J.R." Mary Smyth JOHNSON CITY – Mary Trigg Williams Smyth, 1300 Peterson Place, died on her birthday, Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at Northside Hospital. A native of Lebanon, she moved to Johnson City in 1947 with her husband of 58 years, Jimmy Smyth, who was the longtime executive sports editor of the Johnson City Press. She was a daughter of the late Lawrence A. and Lilly Artrip Williams. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Anna Kate and Earl Breeding, and two brothers, L.A. Williams Jr. and Clyde P. Williams. She was a graduate of Lebanon High School where, as a star basketball player, she met her future husband as he kept score for one of her games. Her beauty earned her the title of Miss Russell County. She was a homemaker and took an active role in the University School P.T.A., where her daughters attended school. She was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. Surviving are her daughters, Patricia Gayle Smyth, Atlanta, Deborah Ann Smyth, Johnson City, and Mary James (Jamie) Smyth, Abingdon; a son-in-law, Bruce Arrowood, Atlanta; four grandchildren, Lindsay James Smyth Kirschner, Abingdon, Lily Marysa Smyth Gibson and Michael James Smyth Gibson, both of Johnson City, and James Patrick Smyth-Arrowood, Atlanta; a sister and brother-in-law, Nell and Tom Cooper, Atlanta, and several special nieces and nephews. She was born in Jewell Ridge, Va., and was the daughter of the late James B. and Maggie Ellen Smith Phillips, both former Tazewell County residents. She had made her home in the Richlands and Grundy areas all of her life and was a missionary for the Mt. Mission School in Grundy for over 20 years. She was of the Church of Christ faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harlas Fullen Wallace, two sisters, Ada Shelton and Louella Elswick, and eight brothers, Roy, Brett, Johnny, Raymond, Robert, Ransom, Earl and Otis Phillips. Survivors are three daughters, Susan Wallace Stiltner and husband James of Clemons, N.C., Barbara Whited of Kernersville and Rebecca Chaney of Stokesdale, N.C.; one sister, Nancy Groce of Salisbury, Md.; one brother, Amos Phillips and wife Dorothy of Richlands, and four grandchildren also survive.
