She was a lifelong resident of Dickenson County and was a member of the Old Regular Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by husband, Thurston Bowman, her parents, Victor and Myrtle (Stone) Fleming, two brothers, Lacy Fleming and Frank Fleming, and her sister, Ruth Mullins. Her survivors include two daughters, Brenda Newberry of Gray, Tenn., and Glenda Bowman of Clintwood; four sons, Larry Bowman, Connie and Ronnie Bowman and John Bowman, all of Clintwood; three grandchildren, Roley, Margaret and Angie, and six great-grandchildren, Paige, Peyton, Miranda, Jonathan Scott, Isabella and Corbin. Cecil Calhoun BRISTOL, Tenn. – Cecil Elwood Calhoun, 76, of 2148 Fifth St., went to be with the Lord on Feb. 28, 2004, from his residence after a brief illness. Mr. Calhoun had lived in the Bristol area all of his life, where he attended church at Fellowship Chapel. He retired from the Flavorich Company. He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard C. Mr. Denny was a native of Ashe County, N.C., and had been a resident of Johnson City since 1968. He was a son of the late Floyd and Elsie Farmer Denny. Mr. Denny was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II. He retired in 1979 from Leon-Ferenbach where he was a machine operator. Mr. Denny attended Unicoi Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine Ward Denny, in 2000, one brother, Walter Denny, and one infant sister, Marjorie Denny. Survivors include one son, Larry C. Effie Hellas NORTH TAZEWELL, Va. – On Friday, Feb. 27, 2004, Effie Hellas entered eternity to walk with her beloved Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. After 81 blessed years, she concluded this life at Tazewell Community Hospital surrounded by her family and friends, who were lovingly supported by church members and a compassionate nursing staff. the daughter of William Walker "Poppy" Hillman and Mary Magdalene Porter "Mama" Hillman, Effie was raised in Dante with her six siblings. She and her late husband, George ("Dave") Hellas Sr. raised their five children in the Dry Fork area of North Tazewell, where Effie resided until she was called to join her Heavenly Father. "Miss Effie" was the mother of the late George "David" Hellas Jr. of North Tazewell and the late Norma Jean ("Jeannie") Hellas Hollins of Richmond. In addition to Effie’s parents, husband of 32 years, Dave, and their two youngest children, David and Jeannie, she was also preceded in death by sisters, Thelma Leftwich, Alpha Mullins, Hazel Culbertson and Lois Hall, and brother, Oval Hillman. Left to mourn the loss of their precious mother are son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Bea Hellas of North Tazewell; daughter and son-in-law, Gayle and Everett Messer of Richmond, and daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lynn and Bobby Baldwin of North Tazewell. Doris Owen Rice ABINGDON – Doris Owen Rice, 76, died Friday, Feb. 27, 2004, at Wellmont Hospice House. She was born in Bristol Tennessee, a daughter of the late Nick F. And Gertha Shufflebarger Owen, and was retired from Columbus McKinnon Corporation. She is survived by four children, Trey Rice of Madison, Ala., Jan Reeves of Herndon, Va., Andrea Rice of Clemmons, N.C., and Sylvia Finley of Blountville; three sisters, Edna Moran of Millville, Del., Wilma Allen of Orange, Va., and Peggy Vance of Bristol Tennessee; two brothers, Gene Owen of Bristol Tennessee and Doug Owen of Roanoke, and six grandchildren, Eric and Kelly Rice, Michael Reeves and Nikki, Rachael and Stephanie Marterre. Elizabeth Slagle MIAMI – Elizabeth Cunningham Slagle, formerly of St. Paul, Va., passed away Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, in Miami. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Slagle, and one son, Billy. She is survived by one sister, Eva Jane King of Castlewood, and three brothers, Paul Cunningham of Virginia Beach, Va., Joe Cunningham of Bristol Tennessee, and Douglas Cunningham of Jefferson, Ga. Information courtesy of Castlewood Funeral Home, Castlewood. Mary Stambaugh MARION – Mary Elizabeth Stambaugh, age 82, died Friday, Feb. 27, 2004 at her home. Born on July 1, 1921, in Fort Henry, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Ralph W. and Mary Young Stambaugh. She served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and had lived in Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, where she worked in the business department of the Buccaneer Hotel for 30 years. Mary was an avid tennis player and golfer in her younger years, had traveled extensively all over the world and was a photographer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Stambaugh and Marcus Milton Stambaugh, and a sister, Grace Stambaugh Dalton. Surviving are one sister-in-law, Helen Boyd Stambaugh of Marion; two nieces, Sallie Stambaugh Lefler and husband William P. Lefler of Marion and Linda Stambaugh Palmer of Los Angeles, and three great-nieces and one great-nephew, B.J. Lefler Roberson, Sallie Lefler Moss, Marian Durell Lefler and Shaun Marcus Lefler. A family memorial service will be held Sunday afternoon , Feb. 29, at 3 p.m. at the home, 312 Wassona Circle, conducted by the Rev. Neville Mozingo.
