Bernice Cantrell ROWE, Va. – Bernice Maxine Cantrell Rose, 68 years of age, passed away Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol Tennessee. Born in Buchanan County, Aug. 23, 1935, she was the daughter of the late William Allen Rose and Mary Elizabeth Boyd Rose. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of the Robinson Fork Church of God, was a homemaker and a loving mother and grandmother. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Edward Cantrell, one son, Jerry Lee Cantrell, three sisters, Tilda Jane Lowe, Viola Rose and Youfradis Rose, and two brothers, Alveris Rose and Claude Rose. She is survived by four daughters, Phyllis Justice and husband Michael of Oakwood, Va., Patricia Ann Cantrell of Fort Eustis, Va., Carol Lynn Lowe and husband Ellis of Swords Creek, Va., and Connie Cantrell of Rowe; four sons, Ronald Edward Cantrell and wife Doris of Raven, Va., Gary Wayne Cantrell of Galax, Va., Johnny Allen Cantrell of Rowe and Roger Dale Cantrell and wife Kimberly of Fort Riley, Kan.; one sister, Lilly Mae Kuntz of Chapel Hill, N.C., and one brother, Sherman Rose of Tazewell. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and four step-grandchildren. Effie Hellas NORTH TAZEWELL, Va. – On Friday, Feb. 27, 2004, Effie Hellas entered eternity to walk with her beloved Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. After 81 blessed years, she concluded this life at Tazewell Community Hospital surrounded by her family and friends, who were lovingly supported by church members and a compassionate nursing staff. The daughter of William Walker "Poppy" Hillman and Mary Magdalene Porter "Mama" Hillman, Effie was raised in Dante, Va., with her six siblings. She and her late husband, George ("Dave") Hellas Sr. raised their five children in the Dry Fork area of North Tazewell, where Effie resided until she was called to join her Heavenly Father. "Miss Effie" was the mother of the late George "David" Hellas Jr. of North Tazewell and the late Norma Jean ("Jeannie") Hellas Hollins of Richmond. In addition to Effie’s parents, husband of 32 years, Dave, and their two youngest children, David and Jeannie, she was also preceded in death by sisters, Thelma Leftwich, Alpha Mullins, Hazel Culbertson and Lois Hall, and brother, Oval Hillman. Left to mourn the loss of their precious mother are son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Bea Hellas of North Tazewell; daughter and son-in-law, Gayle and Everett Messer of Richmond, and daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lynn and Bobby Baldwin of North Tazewell. She is survived by one brother, Lloyd Hillman of Clintwood, who was devotedly by her side the day of her death. Survivors also include "Granny Effie’s" grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Bobby Baldwin and wife Michelle, their daughter, Jordan, and son, Dalton, of Omar, Fla., Leeanne and husband Randy Safewright and their children, Jared Honaker, Alecia Honaker and Randy ("Snooter") Safewright Jr., of Knoxville, Melissa and husband David Hicks and their son, Dustin, of Bluefield, Va., Wendy and husband Nolan Morris and their daughter, Nichole, son, Daniel, and son (expected to arrive in March), of Richmond, Donna Hellas and child (expected to arrive in September) of North Tazewell, Robin and husband John Moss and their daughters, Raegan and Carrie-Anne, of Tazewell, Kerry and husband Woody Fretwell of Richmond, Donald ("D.J.") Empire Community College, where he had received a scholarship and was on the dean’s list. Beulah Stinnett BRISTOL, Tenn. – Beulah Hawkins Stinnett, 87, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004. Mrs. Stinnett was born July 3, 1916, in Lynchburg, Va., a daughter of the late Jacob and Maude McClough Hawkins. She had lived most of her life in the Bristol area. She was a member of Euclid Avenue Baptist Church. She was a precious Christian mother and wife who will always be remembered by her loving family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther C. Stinnett Sr. Survivors include two daughters, Myrna J. O’Dell and husband Malcolm of Kingsport and Anna M. Hess and husband Frank of Piney Flats; two sons, Luther C. Stinnett Jr. and wife Betty of Bristol Virginia and H. Robert "Bob" Stinnett and wife Joyce of Bristol Tennessee; three sisters, Cathleen McFaddin of Fredericksburg, Va., and Irene Wood and Beatrice Harlow, both of Lynchburg; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Williams, 73, died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, in the Russell County Medical Center in Lebanon. Born March 30, 1930, in Dante, Va., a daughter of the late Tivis Fields and the late Bertha Poston Fields, she had lived in Scott County the past seven years. She was of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Reba Hamm, and several brothers and sisters. Survivors include her husband of 27 years, Paul Williams; two daughters and sons-in-law, Threva and Dennis Boggs, Coeburn, and Karen and Benjamin Phipps, Bluff City; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Frank and Analee Osborne and Howard (Bug) and Rosalee Osborne, all of Coeburn, William Larry and Wanda (Frog) Osborne, Dante, and Donald and Karen Osborne, Knoxville; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; six brothers, Homer Fields and Bobby Fields, both of Dante, Ray Fields of Maryland, Hershal Fields and Johnny Fields, both of Castlewood, and Tivis Fields, Bristol Virginia, also several nieces and nephews. Bessie Wilson KINGSPORT – Bessie Christina Wilson, 97, went to be with the Lord Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at Asbury Place, Johnson City. She was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County and the daughter of the late Henderson W. and Susan Ella Droke Snodgrass. She was the oldest member of Blountville United Methodist Church, where she had served as teacher, church secretary, church treasurer and various other roles during her 85 years of membership. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hal Henry Wilson, a daughter, Evelyn Louise Wilson Ketron, five sisters, Ethel Snodgrass, Mae Jones, Ann Snodgrass, Ruth Snodgrass and Ada Milsap, and two brothers, George Snodgrass and Joe Snodgrass. Mrs. Wilson is survived by a son-in-law, Thomas W. Ketron Jr.; one brother, Wiley Snodgrass of Blountville; five grandsons, Thomas Hal Ketron and wife Sue, Roger W. Ketron and wife Pat, William D. Ketron and wife Kathy and Robert J. Ketron and wife Robin, all of Kingsport, and Michael E. Ketron of Gray; seven great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
