Dixie Blane Brown RAVEN, Va.– Mrs. Dixie Blane Brown, age 68, passed away Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, in a Richlands hospital following a short illness. Born in Tazewell County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Terry and Mattie Ruth Mercer Ball. She was a clerk for Island Creek Coal Co. Store and Kmart. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Denny Ball and Richard Ball. She is survived by two daughters, Tammy Stilwell of Raven and Angela Caylor of Charlestown, W.Va.; three sons, Eddie Brown of Paintlick, Va., Wayne Brown of Bluemont, Va., and Danny Brown of Abingdon; five sisters, Pauline Looney of Ohio, Cathlene Smith of Baltimore, Geneva Berryman of North Carolina, Janice Sykes of Honaker and Mary Austin of Gettysburg, Pa.; three brothers, Jimmy Ball of Richlands, Bud Ball of Fork Ridge, Va., and Frankie Ball of Ohio; and 10 grandchildren also survive. Linda Bowen Carrico DUFFIELD– Linda Reece Bowen Carrico, 62, entered into rest Saturday morning, Feb. 28, 2004, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center, with her loving family surrounding her. Born in Kingsport, she was a daughter of the late U.W. (Jay) and Helen Quillen Bowen. She was a former employee of ASG & Virginia Electric and a member of Three Bells United Methodist Church in Duffield. Prior to her disability in 1983, she was active in the community through her involvement with the Girl Scouts and as PTA president. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her precious brother, Jay E. Bowen. He was born in Smyth County to the late Staley and Florence Hall Parks, and retired from Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute. He was a very active member of the Adwolfe Freewill Baptist Church, having served as an usher, teacher and superintendent of the Sunday School program. He was also very active in the Adwolfe Ruritan Club, having served as secretary, and the Woodmen of the World. Survivors include: wife of 27 years, Betty Parks; three sons, Don Parks, Wytheville, Ronnie Hall, Marion, and Gary Dutton and wife Dawn, Winston-Salem; two daughters, Karen Russell, Marion, and Tammy Johnson, Kingsport; one brother, David Parks and wife Audrey, Duck, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; 11 great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Rasnake HUNTERSVILLE, N.C.– Mrs. Vera Kurotschka Rasnake, age 75, of 13001 Old Statesville Road, passed away Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at Huntersville Oaks. Born Jan. 15, 1929, in Zhytomyr, Ukraine, she was a daughter of the late Lucian and Lidia Kurotschka. She was a survivor of German concentration camps during World War II. Vera met her husband, Warner, following the Allied liberation in 1945. She was married in Germany during one of her husband’s Army tours of duty there in 1953. After a final tour (1963-65) in Kitzingen, Germany, Vera spent the majority of her child-rearing days in Fayetteville, N.C., following Warner’s retirement from active service in 1965. Vera moved back to Honaker in 1977, spending her early retirement years at the old Roby K. Rasnake farm homestead. She moved to Charlotte in 1993, was an 11-year member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, serving in Teresa Roman’s Sunday School Class and experiencing the joy of singing God’s praises with Hickory Grove’s Christionnaires Choir. Her legacy was in living every day of her life with Christ as her focus and purpose, spending hours daily reading God’s word or in prayer for her husband and her three sons and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband, Warner Samuel Rasnake, in May 1993. Survivors include three sons, Mr. Marty Rasnake and wife, Kim of Davidson, N.C., Mr. Sandy Rasnake of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Mr. Luke Rasnake and wife, Christine of Wyckoff, N.J.; one sister, Miss Liuba Kurotschka of Ukraine; one brother, Mr. Eugine Kurotschka of Ukraine; seven grandchildren, Dara Rasnake, Callie Rasnake, Christian Rasnake, Cameron Rasnake, Jason Rasnake, Heather Rasnake and Blake Rasnake also survive. She was born in Dante, daughter of the late Charlie and Nola Fraley Steffey. She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Billy. She is survived by two sisters, Claudine Branson of Castlewood and Leota Bisson of Castlewood; one uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Fraley of Castlewood; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Evangeline Taylor Thomas NEWPORT NEWS, Va.– Evangeline Taylor Thomas, age 82, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, at Riverside Regional Convalescent Center, Newport News. Born in Honaker, she was the daughter of the late Paris E. and Irene W. Taylor. She had resided in the Newport News area for over 60 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Sargent in 2002. Survivors include her loving husband of 45 years, Aubrey Thomas; one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and John Murphy; and one granddaughter, Kara Murphy, all of Newport News; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Carter and Dorothy Taylor, James. B. and Ann Taylor, and Thomas and Rosemary Taylor all of Honaker, and Lawrence and Sue Taylor of Lebanon; two sisters, Dorothy Willard and Betty Hall both of Honaker; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
