Carrier BRISTOL, Va. – Paul H. Carrier, age 94, went to be with the Lord on March 1, 2004, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was the son of the late Oliver and Annie Virginia Whitt Carrier and was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area. Mr. Carrier was retired from Smith Transfer and Quality Printers, where he worked in maintenance. He was a member of Beaver View Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian B. Nelson Carrier. Survivors include: sons and spouses, Bob and Bonnie Carrier, Cecil and Louise Carrier, Paul Jr. and Virginia Carrier; eight grandchildren; and 11 great- grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at 8 p.m. at Beaver View Baptist Church, with Rev. Roy Yelton, Rev. Howard Robinson and Rev. Jeff Keene officiating. Committal services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Mountain View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tony Ray, Ray Duty, Zeke Browning, W. W. "Champ" Gray and Everett Flick. Colley SALTVILLE – Edith Faye Barker Colley died Tuesday, March 2, 2004, in Grace HealthCare in Abingdon. She was a member of Rush Creek Primitive Baptist Church. She was the widow of James C. Colley, who preceded her in death on March 1, 2000. They had been married 54 years. She was born July 24, 1912, to Elder H.T. Barker and Annie Barker Barker of Ashe County, N.C. Her family moved to Clinchburg, Va., where she grew up and lived the rest of her life. She was also preceded in death by five older sisters, Flora Anderson, Tancy Martin, Callie Rexrode Easter, Mary Lee Maiden and Nellie Davidson; two older brothers, Walter Webb Barker and Elder Lester Barker; one niece, Ruth Anderson Salmon; and six nephews, Charles Rexrode, Elmer Rexrode, Jimmy Rexrode, Earl Maiden Jr., Tommy Davidson and Kenneth Blevins. Survivors: seven nieces, Grace Martin, Pauline Anderson, Mabel Martin, Rita Bailey, Marguerite Malcolm, Nellie Gray Olinger and Rebecca Music; six nephews, John Anderson, Eugene Blevins, Billy Rexrode, Lester Roger Barker, Thomas Barker and Earl David Barker. Funeral services for Mrs. Colley will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 4, 2004, at Henderson Funeral Home, with Elder Eddie Lyles officiating. He was an active member of Gate City United Methodist Church. Papa was a gentle man who loved his family very much. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with Company C 291st Engineering Combat Battalion, and received five battle stars and several awards. He was retired from the Mead Corporation. He was a charter member and the first president of Scott County Lifesaving Crew and former member of Gate City Fire Department. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Leonard and Maude Wood Compton; his wife of 47 years, Mary E. Johnson Compton; his brother, Robert Compton; sister, Sadie McCauley Baker; stepsister, Jeanette Bledsoe; and grandson, Jenner Johnson. Survivors include daughters, Joanne Flanary and husband Cecil, Mary Bateman and husband Stan, all of Gate City; sons, Richard (Dick) Johnson of Little Switzerland, N.C., William (Bill) J. Johnson and wife Lotis of Kingsport; eight grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; stepsister, Edith Kilgore and husband Emory; and nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Gate City United Methodist Church, with the memorial service immediately following the visitation. Rev. Dale Wyrick will officiate. Cressell BLUFF CITY – Arnold L. Cressell, 77, of 370 Fox Hollow Lane, died Monday, March 1, 2004, at Bristol Nursing Home, Bristol Tennessee, following an extended illness. He was a native of Parrott, Va., and the son of the late Terry Gilford and Annie Owens Cressell. Mr. Cressell was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by two brothers, and one stepson, Andrew Hyatt. He was a native of Washington County, Va., and a son of the late Jack and Myrtle Forrester Blevins. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Hodge was born in Mascot, Tenn., the son of the late Zenard Hodge and Zenna Mae Wagner Hodge. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving in the South Pacific. He moved to Bristol in 1949. He worked in the floor covering industry for 56 years and was a member of Addilynn United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Norma Jean Sutton Hodge of the home; two daughters, Pat Adams and her husband Edward of Bluff City and Connie Burkett and her husband Mel of Lexington, S.C.; a son, Ronald "Ron" Hodge of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; one sister, Georgia Reneau and her husband Earl of Knoxville; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
