Clarence Greenleaf GRUNDY – Preacher Clarence Smith Greenleaf, known as a preacher, teacher, leader, visionary, civic-minded and most of all a giant of faith, 89 years of age, went to be with the Lord Friday evening, March 5, 2004, at his home in Poe Town, Grundy, following an extended illness. Born Feb. 23, 1915, in Charleston, W.Va., he was a son of the late Charles Cleveland and Minnie Ethel Hatfield. He had lived in Grundy for more than 50 years. "Preacher" Greenleaf graduated from Charleston High School, Charleston, attended Kanawha College (now University of Charleston), Bethany College, Bethany, W.Va., and University of West Virginia, Morgantown, W.Va. Affectionately known as Preacher "G," he preached his first sermon at age 16 near Chapmanville, W.Va., and became known as the "boy preacher." While at Kanawha College, Professor McDaniel encouraged him and began making appointments for him to preach on weekends. He would travel as far as Bluefield, Va., to preach in youth meetings and revivals. In summer of 1935, at age 19, he held a meeting at Graham Christian Church, Bluefield, Va. In 1936, Samuel R. (Pa) Hurley invited him to Grundy for a meeting. He preached in a tent on Slate Creek in the bottom immediately below Mountain Mission School. On July 31, 1939, he married Louise Pappas in Charleston. During this time, he also preached at the Little Prater Church of Christ during the 1950s in the afternoon, Rosedale Church of Christ, Big Branch Church of Christ and at the Big Rock Church of Christ, where his transportation was a bicycle.
