Wilbur Earl Alsup BRISTOL, Tenn. – Wilbur Earl Alsup, 80, went to be with the Lord Monday, March 8, 2004, in Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Norene, Tenn., and was a son of the late Samuel Earl and Nannilee Hall Alsup. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific Theater aboard the USS Monterey. During his service in the U.S. Navy, he received the Asiatic-Pacific Area Service Ribbon with two stars, the American Area Service Ribbon and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. He lived and worked in Pontiac, Mich., for many years and moved to Bristol in 1978. He was a member of State Street Church of Christ. He was fondly known as "Mr. Wilbur" to his Bristol Motor Speedway friends. Mr. Alsup is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sadie Eastridge Alsup; two daughters, Saundra K. Jirik and husband, Edward F. Jirik, of Memphis, Tenn., and Roxanne A. Mullan and husband, Rev. Richard D. Mullan, of Bristol Tennessee; four sisters, Thelma E. Manning and Marguerite Pass, both of Lebanon, Tenn., Gail Evans and husband, William, of Clarkston, Mich., and Sarah L. Porter of Indialantic, Fla.; three brothers, Herbert S. Alsup and wife, Teresa, of Pontiac, Mich., and Claborn H. Alsup and wife, Betty, and Wallace K. Alsup and wife, Sue, all of Lebanon, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Mary Anne Teague and husband, Craig, Laura A. Hutchinson and husband, Jonathan, William E. Armstrong, Sarah E. Jirik, Emily A. Jirik, Kimberly S. Mullan and Kelly N. Mullan; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, in the Akard Funeral Home Chapel with Dan C. Boyd VANSANT, Va. – Michael Ray Boyd, age 29, passed away Saturday, March 6, 2004, at his residence. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of Kennith and Linda Thomas Boyd. He was preceded in death by two uncles, Bobby Thomas and Ronnie Boyd; and one aunt, Rita Thomas. In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Cynthia Boyd of Lebanon and Kasey Boyd of Vansant; maternal grandparents, James and Loraine Thomas of Pilgrims Knob, Va.; and paternal grandparents Sidney and Opal Boyd of Vansant. Judy Marie Branham CLINTWOOD – Judy Marie Salyers Branham, age 57, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Sunday, March 7, 2004, at Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol Tennessee, after a brief illness. Her father, Fred V. "Pug" Salyers, preceded her in death. Judy accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior on June 21, 1981, and joined Valley View Freewill Baptist Church on July 5, 1981. Judy loved the Lord and loved her church, where she served diligently until her death. Judy had a singing ministry with her husband Johnny, where she sang in churches, funerals, revivals, fund raising events, organizations, jails and anywhere she thought she might be of service for her Lord. She and her husband had a radio program, called "Joy In Jesus," on WDIC and Heritage TV. She also wrote a column for the Dickenson Star newspaper called, "Simply Delicious." Surviving is her husband, Johnny Ray Branham; her mother, Jean Fleming Salyers; her sister, Nancy Carol Salyers; and her brother, Fred Salyers, all of Clintwood; and a special nephew, Shawn Roberts, Abingdon, also survives her. Funeral services for Judy Branham will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Valley View Freewill Baptist Church, with Ministers Lynn Vanover and Roger Freeman officiating. Clifton PATTERSON, Va. – Mr. Junior Robert Clifton, age 51, passed away Sunday, March 7, 2004, in a Buchanan County hospital following a long illness. Born on Nov. 27, 1917, in Dickenson County, she was the daughter of the late James Blaine and Emily Willis Singleton. She was a lifelong resident of Russell County and was a member of Reeds Valley Primitive Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Edd Maxfield, one son, James Paul Maxfield, two brothers and four sisters. She is survived by her son, Tony Maxfield and his wife Barbara; six daughters, Rita Jean McClanahan, Polly Ann Honaker and husband Fred, Linda Sue Maxfield and Nina Gay Harrison and husband Joe Frank, all of Honaker, Teresa Diane Owens and husband John of Cleveland, Va., and Lula Honaker of Honaker; a foster child, Don Artrip of Columbus, Ohio; sisters, Voneva Cooper of Michigan, Theda Artrip of Roanoke and Joann Adkins of Defiance, Ohio; one brother, James Coy Singleton, Honaker; two special lifetime friends, Pauline Taylor and Gaynell Artrip; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews also survive. She was born at Deane, Ky., lived most of her life in Letcher County and had lived in Wise for the past 20 years. She had retired from Fleming-Neon Grade School, where she had worked as a cook. Alfred was born Jan. 1, 1917, in Shady Valley, Tenn., where he spent most of his childhood before moving to Bristol Tennessee. The family moved back to Johnson County, where Alfred graduated from Johnson County High School, Mountain City, Tenn., in 1937. He left Johnson County to work at Kingsport Press, Kingsport, where he was employed until he entered the U.S. Army in 1942. During World War II, Alfred served in the 972nd Signal Corps Battalion for over three years. Most of this time was spent in the Pacific Theater of War. He returned to Kingsport in 1945 and began work for the Press. Alfred married a native of Johnson County girl and they resided in Kingsport, where he worked for the next 42 years. He and his wife returned to Johnson County, where he was residing at the time of his death. Alfred was a current member of St. John’s United Methodist Church of Laurel Bloomery. For many years, he was a member of Clinton Presbyterian Church of Mountain City, where he served as deacon and elder. Alfred was a member of Post 0003, American Legion of Kingsport for 50 years. Alfred is survived by his wife of 58 years, Maxine Leffman Walsh of the home; one son, James Lawrence Walsh and wife Patricia of Kingsport; two brothers, Arvel Walsh and Harry Walsh; and one sister, Peggy Walsh, all of Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Alfred Delno Walsh will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2004, from the chapel of the Hux-Lipford Funeral Home, Mountain City, with Rev. Steve McCrady and Rev. Harold Hudson to officiate. The family will receive friends from 1-2:45 p.m. prior to services. Military graveside services will follow at the Sunset Memorial Park, Damascus, and will be accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be nephews, John Muse, Morris Bury, Michael Chatterton, Joe Walsh, Milton Carter, Rick Lewis, Rick Stewart and David Rash. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Porter, Eric Taylor, Sam Taylor, Kenny Icenhour, Wallace Gentry, Dean Maxwell, Bob Reece and the Johnson County Honor Guard.
