"Conductor" Aker, age 58, died Thursday, March 11, 2004, at his home. Born on May 21, 1945, he was the son of the late Sherrill Clifton and Cornelia Hess Aker. He was employed by Marion Composites, with 30 years of service, and enjoyed working on his farm in Atkins. He was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are his wife, Rita Osborne Aker of Atkins; two daughters and one son- in-law, Angela and Ricky Burnett of Wytheville and Rebecca Aker of Atkins; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Richard and Crystal Aker, Gregory and Paula Aker and Donnie Aker, all of Atkins, and Mike and Elizabeth Aker of Sugar Grove, Va.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Waymon and Janice Aker of Saltville and Glenn and Patricia Aker of Goose Creek, S.C.; father- in-law and mother-in-law, Garnett and Louise Osborne of Marion; two special friends, Joe Tuell of Fisherville, Va., and Kirby and Jane Hancock of Atkins; 11 grandchildren and two special dogs, Sassy and Pooh. Born in Roanoke, he was the son of the late Lowell Allen Bowman and Lillian Hatter Bowman Rodgers. He worked in construction. Surviving are wife, Linda A. Ruby Price Crabtree MEADOWVIEW – Mrs. Ruby Price Crabtree, age 75, of the Clinchburg community, passed away Wednesday, March 10, 2004, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete. "Bud" Derting, 98, passed away at Holston Valley Medical Center on Wednesday, March 10, 2004. Born in Hiltons, Va., on June 5,1905, he was the son of the late Walker S. and Peggy Gardner Derting. Bud was a descendent of the early settlers of the North Fork Holston River community of self-sufficient family farmers. Following employment with Virginia Department of Highways, he gave full-time attention to raising grain crops, tobacco and livestock. He was an original trustee of the local Beech Grove Church and supported it throughout his active life. Because of his longevity and wife experiences in this area of Southwest Virginia, descending generations, both local and from afar, turned to him for information about their ancestors, family lands and cemeteries. His death marks the end to an era of hard-working, self-sufficient family farmers, and his vast knowledge of family history and local folklore will be sorely missed. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Dollie Grove Derting, grandson, Bobby Derting, two sisters, Grace Fleenor and Maxie Reynolds, and siblings Cordie, Velma, Blanche, Sidney, John and Joe died in early childhood. He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, John and Edith Derting, Bluff City, Joe and Janet Derting, Abingdon, and Claude and Helena Derting, Hiltons; brother, Calvin C. Goforth Sr. BRISTOL, Tenn. – Sam W. Goforth Sr., 89, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. Sam Goforth was born Oct. 10, 1914, to the late Jess and Lillie Goforth. Mr. Goforth moved to the Bristol area in 1950 and resided here for the remainder of his life, where he retired from the old Super-Service and Time D.C. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl Goforth. Mr. Goforth was a member of the Church of God. Survivors include daughters, Marylin Hagy of Woodstock, Ga., Patricia "Polly" Cross of Mirmar, Fla., and Deborah "Debbie" Kingsbury of Long Beach, Miss.; sons, Bobby K. Pauline Griffith HONAKER – Mrs. Pauline Wells Griffith, age 80, passed away Tuesday, March 9, 2004, in a Bristol Tennessee hospital. Born June 4, 1923, in Russell County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Jane Honaker Wells. She attended the Honaker Church of God and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Griffith, one daughter, Linda McCray, and one son, Timothy Edward Griffith. Survivors include five sons, Jerry Griffith of Linden, Va., Michael Griffith and Darrell Griffith, both of Honaker, James Griffith of Duncan, S.C., and Bobby Griffith of Paducah, Ky.; four daughters, Jo Ann Griffith Stewart of Duncan, Patsy O’Dell of Bluff City and Pamela Griffith and Judy Griffith, both of Honaker; one sister, Odessa Harris of Honaker; special friend, Moe VanDyke, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive. Kate Carrico Hall MARION – Kate Carrico Hall, age 82, died Thursday, March 11, 2004, in the Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home. Born on July 3, 1921, in Smyth County, she was the daughter of the late Worth and Bessie Ashlin Carrico, and was a faithful member of the Calvary Baptist Church of Marion. Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Garnett Lee Hall of Marion; one son and daughter-in-law, Harley Lee and Cornelia Hall of Marion; one daughter and son- in-law, Peggy and Douglas B. Sally Miller MARION – Sally Mallory Miller, age 62, died Wednesday evening, March 10, 2004, in the Smyth County Community Hospital. Born on May 13, 1941, in Bland, Va., she was the daughter of Thomas Ezra Mallory Sr. of Bland and the late Mamie Dunn Mallory. She was a 1958 graduate of Bland High School and a 1962 graduate of Emory & Henry College, with a bachelor of education degree and was a member of the Delta Omicron Phi Sorority. She did graduate studies at East Tennessee State University, with library science creditation. She was a supportive partner with her husband’s ministry in the United Methodist Ministry for 40 years and was currently a member of the First United Methodist Church of Marion, a member of the Chancel Choir, the Dorothy Mayo Sunday School Class and served as secretary of the United Methodist Women. Sally taught for a number of years at DeKalb County, Atlanta, Dryden Elementary School, East Stone Gap Elementary, Bricky Elementary of Knoxville and Ellen Myers Elementary School in Harragate, Tenn. She also taught in the day care at Glen Alpine United Methodist Church in Kingsport and Burks United Methodist Church in Hixson, Tenn. In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband of 40 years, the Rev. E.G. "Buddy" Miller of Marion; one son, Andy Miller of Marion; one daughter, Pam Miller Stonesifer of Archdale, N.C.; one granddaughter, Mallory Stonesifer of Archdale; one brother and sister-in-law, Thomas E. John Henry Trent FORT BLACKMORE, Va. – John Trent, 89, entered into rest March 10, 2004, at Heritage Hall in Big Stone Gap. Born in Scott County, Va., on Oct. 20, 1914, he was a son of the late James Stewart "Jack" and Julia Sturgill Trent. Mr. Trent worked in the Power and Service Division at Eastman Kodak Company for 33 years and graduated from Dungannon High School in 1938. He retired in 1977. Mr. Trent was a member of the Wood River View Baptist Church in Wood, Va. Addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Massie Trent, five sisters, Ada, Ida, Kate, Margaret and Louise, and four brothers, Earl, Clarence, Bob and Harry. Nancy Ward BRISTOL, Va. – Nancy Jane Denton Ward, 68, passed away Wednesday, March 10, 2004, in Wellmont Hospice House with her family by her side after a lengthy illness. She was the daughter of Betty Lillian Haga Denton and the late Howard Fain Denton. She worked for Burlington Weaving Mill and retired from Belks after 23 years of service. She was a member of Gospel Baptist Church. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her son, Tommy Ryland Baker of Bristol Virginia; her sister and special brother-in-law, Linda Jo and Hal Phillips of Bristol Virginia, and a special nephew and his family, David and Debbie Cox and sons, Lawrence and Isaac. Mrs. Ward had a small but loving family and a large circle of friends and will be greatly missed by all. Born in New York City, he moved to Clearwater in 1957, from Utica, N.Y. He was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, worked for Sperry-Rand and was a bus driver for Martz and Grey Line. He was of the Catholic faith and a U.S. Army veteran, receiving a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was a baseball umpire for high schools and Little League and a life member of "Good Sam’s Club." Surviving are his wife of 23 years, Rita; one son, Thomas E. of Brooksville, Fla.; three daughters, Barbara Soluri and Julie Gilmour, both of Brooksville, and Diane Davis, Tarpon Springs, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Brenda Cormier, Inverness, Fla., and Debbie Cook, Floral City, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 11 great- grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. She is survived by her mother, Irene Witt of Castlewood; sisters and brothers- in-law, Kimberly and Walter Grizzle of Bishop, Va., and Tina and Frank Piatt of Knoxville; maternal grandparents, Silas and Hattie Grizzle of Castlewood; fiancé, Kenneth Webb, and his daughters, Kayla and Amber Webb, all of Richlands; nephews, Matthew Grizzle, Nathaniel Grizzle, Jeremiah Grizzle and Nicholas Piatt, and a niece, Claudia Grizzle. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the Grizzle Family Cemetery in the Eagle’s Nest Branch section of Castlewood, with Rev. Larry Fields officiating. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery. Family and friends are invited to attend Springfield Baptist Church in Carterton after the graveside service. The family will receive friends on Friday, March 12, from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Irene Grizzle, Route 1, Box 308-B, Castlewood, VA 24224.
